Does anyone know of software similar to Corel Painter that runs on Linux? For a while Corel was pushing Linux but not any more.
I guess you are looking for tools like: Gimp (in Core) Inkscape (in Extras)
Well, not really. I use both of those, and perhaps I just need to be educated on new features. Gimp and Inkscape do much, but not all of what I want. As far as I can tell, however, neither of those really replaces Painter with its brushes, papers, and paints, etc.
FWIW, I find the Gimp interface to be harder to use then Photoshop's, although that may just by the fact that I used Photoshop for so long and got used to how it worked. Also, I would say that while Gimp has come a long way, it really isn't up to what Photoshop can do.

There is a version of GIMP out that has a front end that is supposed to be a clone of PhotoShop. I don't remember what it is called though.
It's called gimpShop.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I can tell, this is only ported to OS X right now.

Does OS X use rpm's? I see two different links for rpm's.
I have never used Photoshop so I don't know what the differences are. Just moving from gimp 1.x to 2.x is enough of a change for me.

"Now the bad news. I don’t have 24/7 access to a PC so I have not yet compiled GIMPshop for Windows or Linux. If there are any enterprising developers out there who are able to compile GIMPshop for other platforms, please download GIMPshop’s source code (14 MB), compile it, and either make it available on your site (and give me a shout so I can link to you) OR send me the file and I will host it here."
But earlier, he says: "Suramya.com: Very detailed instructions by Suramya Tomar for compiling and installing GIMPshop under Linux. Get the GIMPshop for Debian package at the bottom of the page."
I obviously glossed over the first and focused on the second...sorry.

It started as an OS X project, but is available for Linux and M$ as well now
