Re: Backing up system
by gmspro
Hi,
http://www.sysresccd.org/Download
With the SystemRescueCd I backed up the /dev/sda6 partition in /mnt/backup/ naming "diskimage"
After backing up operation the file has the automatic extension like "diskimage.000".
Is this file ok to restore?
If I name it "diskimage.gz" then it is automatically renamed with this extension "diskimage.gz.000"
But here below
http://www.sysresccd.org/Screenshots
the file is name like this:
"diskimage.pimg"
Do I have to name with the .pimg extension during backup to restore correctly?
And how can I restore it?

What do you open .mobi files with??
by Beartooth
Something on sourceforge has been recommended to me, but I try to
stick to things that dnf can install. Surely there must be some Fedora-
native ebook reader!

Updated info about disabling tracker related processes?
by Gianluca Cecchi
Hello,
I have recently begun to use again gnome session and I have reinstalled
nautilus.
I see that nautilus depends on tracker and so the reinstall put in tracker
and its things
And this morning in my F28 system with SSD disk (I don't imagine on a
normal sata based environment) I had to kill tracker-extract and
tacker-miner processes because they hogged my cpu for several minutes..
Searching with google I found different info about disabling (or at least
calm down) tracker, but they all seem not updated, in the sense that
several commands/services are not present in my f28 environment.
Any pointer about configuring and/or disabling it?
Thanks in advance,
Gianluca

VPN options
by Keith Lofstrom
I am planning on running a Virtual Private Network from my Fedora
firewall out to a UML virtual colo (running RH9) at another site.
That site will be the place I present services to the world;
httpd, ssh, sftp, smtp. This is to comply with the "no servers"
and dynamic ip restrictions on my Comcast connection to the net;
if my firewall always drives an outbound connection to the
colocation site, I am not worried about changes of ip address,
and I am not opening any inbound ports.
There are a number of options for the VPN - the most attractive
are cipe ( http://sites.inka.de/sites/bigred/devel/cipe.html )
and FreeSwan ( http://www.freeswan.org/ ), though I am told that
one can do all this through an ssh tunnel. I would rather have
simple and secure than super-duper; I have plenty of bandwidth,
and will send outbound http and smtp from the firewall, so the
main bandwidth user will be incoming spam/b/b/b/b mail.
Anyone have some experiences to share about setting up VPN? Is
there anything about either cipe or FreeSwan that is likely to
break with FC1 or FC2?

copy and paste from mouse when window full of icons?
by Gianluca Cecchi
Hello,
while using "Files", the explorer application (version 3.28.1-stable) in my
Fedora 28 system, I have sometimes this kind of problem:
- I normally use what should be "list view" with list of file names
- if I have to paste a file/dir or group of copied files/dirs into a
location where the page listed is full (no blank space inside it), it seems
that I cannot paste: the right mouse click doesn't offer the paste option.
In these cases I temporarily switch to what should be "icon view" and in
this case I always have some blank space because of how items are displayed.
I select a blank space and then right-mouse --> paste
Then I come back to list view...
Is this a sort of bug or what?
Based on this link
https://help.gnome.org/users/gnome-help/stable/files-copy.html.en
I should have "paste" option in menu, but it doesn't happen, see screenshot:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1X1ZPYPJ5B8IRDA6T_LL5AfbCD2YFAy6_/view?us...
NOTE: keyboard shortcut ctrl+c and ctrl+v works, though
Thanks in advance.

Xfce 4.14?
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
Fedora 29
Xfce 4.13
I have a customer interested in me putting Fedora 29
on a laptop.
Problem: Xfce 4.13 is too buggy to release on the general
public. Me, I am loyal and know how to cope with the bugs,
but a typical user, I would not wish that on them.
Is 4.14 anywhere near?
If not, is there a way to lock Fedora 29 into Xfce 4.12?
If not, I guess Mate would be the closest alternative.
I could always go with gnome, but it has a bad case of
the weirds.
Many thanks,

Need a statement on Fedora's purpose
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
I just had a vendor tell me they do not support Fedora Server
because the the developers of Fedora had stated that it is not
a stable release and is used only as a testing ground for Red
Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). And as such, they only supported
RHEL and Cent OS.
Huh ??????
Fedora is more stable in my experience that RHEL ever was. When
I was running Scientific Linux (clone of RHEL of CentOS) I
almost went INSANE!
Is there a statement from the Fedora developers somewhere that
I could send this vendor to straighten him out?
Many thanks,

Firefox does not connect to a secure page
by Enrique Artal
Hi,
I have a problem with firefox trying to connect to a page of my university (address below). This is the error message:
Secure Connection Failed
An error occurred during a connection to rrhh.unizar.es. Cannot communicate securely with peer: no common encryption algorithm(s). Error code: SSL_ERROR_NO_CYPHER_OVERLAP
The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.
Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem.
It also occurs with seamonkey but it works without problems with chrome and chromium. Other colleagues with other linux systems do not have this issue. Other colleague installed fedora in a virtual machine and had the same problem. Best, Enrique.

Frequent temporary freezes on Dell XPS 13 laptop
by Dennis Jacobfeuerborn
Hi,
I just got my new XPS 13 (the 2019 model) and installed Fedora 29 on it.
Everything looks great except that when I work in the shell I experience
a freeze of the system that lasts for about 1-2 seconds and that occurs
every 30-60 seconds which is quite annoying.
I tried isolating the issue by working in an xterm but this shows the
same symptoms as the gnome terminal I usually use. There is nothing in
the logs that correlates with these freezes and it only seems to occur
in a shell.
What is really strange is that when I have glxgears running in a window
then the animation there will also freeze when the freeze in the shell
happens but when I have a youtube video running in Firefox then the
freezes disappear completely and I can work normally in the shell.
This happens both in a Wayland and X11 session.
Does anyone have an Idea what could cause this strange issue and how I
can debug this further?
Regards,
Dennis

what means httpd dependency of "config(httpd) = 2.4.38-4.fc30"?
by Robert P. J. Day
undoubtedly a simple question, but a friend asked me about this
yesterday, and threw a wrinkle into it. (i'm running on fedora 30
branched but that should make no difference.)
if i ask for the package dependencies of, say, httpd, among
everything else, i get the line:
config(httpd) = 2.4.38-4.fc30
i've always interpreted that as, "a proper install of httpd requires
all of its corresponding config files installed," and i've known for a
while that one can list the config files of any installed package
with:
$ rpm -qc httpd
/etc/httpd/conf.d/autoindex.conf
/etc/httpd/conf.d/userdir.conf
/etc/httpd/conf.d/welcome.conf
/etc/httpd/conf.modules.d/00-base.conf
/etc/httpd/conf.modules.d/00-dav.conf
/etc/httpd/conf.modules.d/00-lua.conf
/etc/httpd/conf.modules.d/00-mpm.conf
/etc/httpd/conf.modules.d/00-optional.conf
/etc/httpd/conf.modules.d/00-proxy.conf
/etc/httpd/conf.modules.d/00-systemd.conf
/etc/httpd/conf.modules.d/01-cgi.conf
/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf
/etc/httpd/conf/magic
/etc/logrotate.d/httpd
/etc/sysconfig/htcacheclean
$
is that what the above dependency refers to? that httpd has, as
dependencies, its own config files as displayed by "rpm -qc"? if it
doesn't, i've been confused all this time, but that's not the wrinkle.
said friend then asked, "can a package have, as a dependency, the
config files of some *other* package?" i had to think about that, and
admitted i wasn't sure, as that sounded like a strange dependency, as
i would think the first package would simply depend on the second
package in its entirety, not just on its config files, but i wasn't
sure.
thoughts? am i thinking about this the right way, or have i been
mistaken all this time?
