RE: up2date hanging
by Tim Clarke
The updates are spooled to your drive (/var/spool/up2date?) - ISTR this
is set in the up2date-config.

I had this same issue. On top of about a dozen others just getting
started. I ran it several times before it seemed to get everything
correctly. The nice thing is once it is downloaded, it did not download
again. You might try running just a few of the packages instead of all
of them. It didn't seem to really matter though.

Applying Kernel Patch-Errors on FC1
by Murali P
Hello List
I had earlier reported some compilation errors on
2.6.3 kernel. This was after applying the patch :
"packet-2.6.3.patch " to enable packet writing for
CD-RW.Since then I managed to rectify thoseerrors.I
recompiled and followed the detailed tips posted in
this list. All steps got through correctly but "make
install" failed with the message :
1)Could not load
/lib/modules/2.6.3-2.1.204/unsupported/fs/hfs/hfs.ko
2)Could not load
/lib/modules/2.6.3-2.1.204custom/modules.dep :No such
file or directory ' mkinitrd failed' .Next I copied
the 'bzImage' generated successfully to /boot and
renamed it as vmlinuz-2.6.3-udf to indicate that the
image is packet-writing enabled for CD-RW.
However, on booting the new kernel image I found that
all the modules are missing. The old image is also
giving the same errors.
I know that I have messed up my FC1 system. I think
that it has something to do with 2.6.3-2.1.204custom
directory which is being searched but is
non-existent.Hence I removed the word custom from
EXTRAVERSION=2.6.3-2.1.204custom line in the top
level Makefile.
This does not get my system back to the old state.
I request for urgent help in restoration of my
system.Could some one respond please?
Thanks
Murali

Problems with Mozilla Crashing
by John Nichel
Hi,
I've searched the archives and found quite a few people are having
problems with Mozilla and Fedora 1. I tried all the suggestions that I
found: installed M$'s TTF fonts, uninstalled/reinstalled the ttfonts-ja
package, created a new profile from scratch, etc. and still no go. I've
tried these steps both with the RPM version (1.4) and the latest
download from Mozilla (1.6), but Mozilla will still just 'exit' with no
warning, and no error messages. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
TIA

Why oh why XMMS?
by Mac
I had some problems with XMMS just to get a song into
the play list. I had to force an update but now that
I can get the mp3 to "play" the 2.30 min song only
takes 15 sec to go from start to finish and no sound
is emitted from my speaker. I know the sound board
works because I can hear the mp3's on real Real
Player.
Any suggestions?
Mac

Hit CTRL-P and under the "Audio I/O Plugins", in the "Output Plugin"
box, select something other then "Disk Writer".

Umm, if it was lack of the mp3 plugin, it wouldn't look like the song
was playing at all, so this is most likely incorrect.

what are the restrictions on bootable partitions?
by Robert P. J. Day
what are the restrictions on where i can install another linux distro
onto my fedora core (actually, FC2-t3) system so that grub can find it?
(even though this is a test version of fedora, this question actually
refers to FC distros in general.)
typically, for historical reasons, even when i use LVM, i create a small
primary, ext3 filesystem for /boot, and use LVM for the rest of the drive.
is there any compelling reason for doing this anymore? what's the
recommended strategy for LVM? and need for a non-LVM filesystem on newer
machines?
and, on top of all this, i want to add at least one other distro to the
system; in this case, xandros 2.0, for evaluation for a client. can i add
this additional distro entirely within LVM and have grub still find it
properly? i suspect yes, but i wanted to make sure before i spent all
that installing. thanks.
