Re: Built in sound card and ethernet card not found. Help needed. Thanks.
by Albert Teoh
This is my first time using Linux. The version I am using is Fedora
Core 1. I am having 2 problems here:
Fedora can't detect my built-in network card. My network card is
Marvell 88E8001 Gigabit Lan Controller supporting 10/100/1000 BASE-T Ethernet. The message given to me is "3cf9x device eth0 does not seem to be present, delaying intialization". What should I do?
Fedora detected my built-in sound card as AC97 AD1985. But I
couldnt listen to any sound when I tested it. Is it because my sound card is incompatible with this version of Linux? How should I solve it?
Attached is a link to my motherboard specification:
http://www.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?m=P4P800%20SE&langs=01
Thanks.

Siang Leng

Wireless Network driver needed
by Dave Smith
Does anyone know where to get a driver for a Linksys PCI Adapter
WMP54GS? I've tried the Linksys web site without success and done Google
searches to no avail.
Thanks.

Tar and hard links.
by WipeOut
Hi,
I have a small backup system running which basically uses rsync with the
--link-dest= option which basically creates hard links to unchanged files..
For anyone interested this means that I am able to backup 950MB over 6
days and only use 1.3GB (instead of the nearly 4GB it would take with a
straight copy) of disk space.. :)
Anyway, I now need to backup the 6 days worth of daily backups (along
with other data) to a tape and I will be using tar.. I don't want to
have to backup the full volume of 4GB if there is a way to backup the
hard links and so save space on the tape..
How does tar handle hard links?? Is there a switch to use or does it
handle them automatically??
I looked through the man page and only saw a reference to symlinks but
not hard links..
Later..

Howto get rid of old kernels
by John Fleming
How do I get rid of old kernels and their listing in the graphical boot
screen? They were all installed using yum or up2date, so I assume I can
remove them with either of those. Will that remove them from the boot
screen too? Tnx - John

Thank you it worked I mounted it without using the -t option is that OK?
But what is the difreance then between [mkfs -t ext3 /dev/hdb1] and
[mkfs.ext3 -v /dev/hdb1],
the dot between mkfs and ext3 puzzels me.

mount ran out of loop devices
by Michael Thomas
I'm trying to mount a handful of iso images so that their contents can
be shared across the network. Fedora Core 1 seems to have a limit of 8
loop devices that I can use to mount these images. I need 9 ;)
Here's what I get when I run mount on the 9th image:
# mount -o loop yarrow-i386-disc3.iso /shared/redhat/fedoracore1-3
mount: could not find any free loop device
But there are more than 8 loop devices listed in /dev:
# ls /dev/loop*
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 7, 0 Jan 30 2003 /dev/loop0
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 7, 1 Jan 30 2003 /dev/loop1
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 7, 10 Jan 30 2003 /dev/loop10
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 7, 11 Jan 30 2003 /dev/loop11
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 7, 12 Jan 30 2003 /dev/loop12
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 7, 13 Jan 30 2003 /dev/loop13
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 7, 14 Jan 30 2003 /dev/loop14
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 7, 15 Jan 30 2003 /dev/loop15
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 7, 2 Jan 30 2003 /dev/loop2
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 7, 3 Jan 30 2003 /dev/loop3
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 7, 4 Jan 30 2003 /dev/loop4
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 7, 5 Jan 30 2003 /dev/loop5
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 7, 6 Jan 30 2003 /dev/loop6
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 7, 7 Jan 30 2003 /dev/loop7
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 7, 8 Jan 30 2003 /dev/loop8
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 7, 9 Jan 30 2003 /dev/loop9
So how do I access the other loop devices so that I can mount more than
8 ISOs?

kppp
by Chadley Wilson
Hello to all
Anyone have a quick fix for kppp, it seems it requires root privileges
which is not convenient for home users.
Maybe there is an alternative that is stock with fc1 for gnome?

apt package list?
by Dave Stevens
Hello all,
I recently installed apt-get for FC1 and have installed several packages
astonishingly easily. Very nice. I don't know how to tell what packages are
available or where there is a directory of such packages. Can someone point
me in the right direction, please? Also, will someone please recommend an
editor for .avi files? My digital camera takes reasonable video, but it seems
always to be a bit too dark. I'd like to have something like the Gimp, but
for .avi so I can do simple edits and lighten it up.
