Greetings all ,
Is there a tool under Fedora Core 1 that is able to convert a pdf
document to
a standard text file ( like the ones that vi produces ) ?

Change the vertical refresh rate for a specific resolution .

Greetings all ,
I have a Samsung Syncmaster 757DFX monitor . Right now it is defined as
a Generic 1024*768
monitor since it is an unknown monitor type for Fedora Core 1 and the cd
that came with the monitor
doesn't say anything about Linux .
Right now my display settings are ( K --- > System Settings ---> Display
) 1024*768 and Thousands of
colors . Is there a way to make the X Window System display the vertical
refresh rate that they use ?
Is there a way to adjust that ( the vertical refresh rate that the X
Windows System uses ) ?

FC2: fwtk http-gw fixes or alternative recommendations?

has anyone done the fixes to get the old tis firewall tool kit to work under
fedora core 2, or else can any recommend an alternative the old http-gw?
(i do plan to look at potential squid configurations to see if i can coerce it
into doing what i want.)

NFS problems in FC2?

I have a fresh FC2 install and I am trying to mount to an NFS on my RH 7.3
file server. Under FC1 I had no trouble mounting to it, but now I get "mount to
NFS server 'file' failed: server is down." The server isn't down because I
can get other Linux boxes with other distros to mount with no problem.
Is anyone else have a problem or is there something different that has to
be done in FC2?

Well, they are supposed to be, at least in the grand scheme of things. But
two things stand in the way.
First, GCC is a hard thing to develop and maintain across so many platforms.
There might be some issues that crop up now and again relating to version
compatibility. If they do, then the maintainers have work to do. So this
might be a reason for a developer to ask for a specific verstion that is not
the latest.
Second, even if a particular package can be built with a version of GCC
doesn't mean that the author knows it can be. If I built my software on
v2.96 and you ask me about v3.4.1, my answer might be "No, I need 2.96." If
I haven't been able to confirm it works on a later version, I might not
claim compatibility. So you might try, and see what happens; but that's at
your risk.

Here's one way to do it. Let's say you have libraries for blarg that
normally go in /usr/local/blarg. You are currently at v1.0. Put the
libraries somewhere else, say /usr/blarg/v1.0 and place symlinks with the
same names in /usr/local/blarg.
When you go to v2.0, put the new libraries in (let's say) /usr/blarg/v2.0.
Remove the symlinks in /usr/local/blarg and put new ones in that point to
/usr/blarg/v2.0
By memory, this would be something like
ln -s /usr/local/blarg/libblarg.so /usr/blarg/v2.0/libblarg.so
Now your makefiles that look in /usr/local/blarg find the correct libraries
via the symbolic links to whichever set of libraries you wish to use. By
changing the links (easy to do in a script) you can switch between them as
you need.

I remember something about this, but the details escape me. If you know
there are a lot of potential issues involved in migrating, you might decide
to stay put until your test and evaluation capability can catch up. If you
have a known issue you can't or won't work around, you might wait until your
compiler catches up with a fix.

OpenOffice gaining on MSOffice?

A new rpm appeared in the Fedora development tree yesterday which has to
be the largest I've ever seen posted:
openoffice.org-i18n-1.1.2-2.i386.rpm 124807302 July 31, 2004 09:54:00
This is 2/3 larger than the 1.1.1-6 version in FC3t1. If it's not a
debug version, it must contain something really huge, like support for
every possible character in the UTF-8 specification.

Hi all,
Im trying to setup a proxy server like the linux manual - customization
guide
Page 120/320! Shows u how.
However I don't even have the options in the menu as they say I should.
I have install fc1 - custom with all the packages.
How do I get that gnome-lokkit program to run in the graphical version.

not Re: yum exclude?

OK OK OK I give up I can't read.
But on another note...
I recently installed a new 60 gig hard drive. I did this to overcome a
situation where I was rapidly running out of space through loading up /home.
The new drive is ext3 like the old one. The / drive is 38 gigs, there are
three partitions, boot, swap and root. I installed hdc and formatted it as
ext3 all one partition, so /dev/hdc1
I copied all of /home to the new drive, then mounted it as /home. This works
ok and gives me 30 gigs of new space. I want to release the space taken up by
the old /home directory, so I commented out the mount line in fstab and
rebooted, regaining access to the old /home. I used nautilus as root and
navigated to the /home directory and deleted all the contents. The directory
now shows up as empty, but df shows the space still in use. I'd like to get
that cleared up, the space would be worthwhile and the system runs like a dog
with 87% of the filesystem full.
I tried to set the reboot count to 400 so as to trigger a fsck on the next
reboot, but that hasn't changed anything.
Ideas?

MIDI editor

Does anyone know any freely downloadable MIDI editors for Linux? I've
got Cakewalk Pro Audio for Windows, but I don't like using Windows and
use it only when necessary. I like Cakewalk's sheet music-like
interface. I like being able to click on a particular area on the page
and have the currently selected musical note appear there. Are there
any products like this for Linux?
