Remote Desktops (VNC) - have some problems...
by Dan Thurman
Using a remote desktop environment (VNC), I do get the GUI
desktop to appear and for the most part it works well, but there
are some issues listed below. I am currently using the GNOME
environment.
Issue #1: The desktop menus are not available for at least 15-45
seconds after desktop window appears ready to use. This was
not a problem in FC1 through FC3 and is much slower in FC4.
I am using the same hardware for FC1 through FC4.
Issue #2: Some application will not appear (or pop up it's
application window), especially where security credentials
are required.
Examples are: Services and Samba in
Desktop->System Settings menu
I tried to bring up the above applications both as a root user and
as a regular user. The difference between root and a regular user
is the non-root user is required to provide security credentials via
security dialog when it appears. In both cases, no application
window will appear for the application selected. There are no messages
given as to why the application will not appear.
At this point, I will need to go to the console directly or use the command
line to do what I need to do. I just wanted to point this out so that
perhaps these issues might be resolved.
Kind regards,
Dan

PPTP arp problem
by Rick Lim
I have an arp problem
I am configuring PPTP (poptop)
(I know its not supposed to be secure enough but my friend wants to use it)
I have a firewall
Vpn client -eth0- (vpn) -firewall- eth1--> local lan 192.168.0
\- wlan0 --> wireless local lan 192.168.1
The problem is when the vpn is establish and the wlan0 is up and running the
Arp table shows the wlan0 interface for the vpn and I cannot ping thru on
the vpn.
When I shut off the wlan0 the arp table is correct and I can ping from the
client to the local lan.
Has anyone run into this problem with a fix????

Fedora Triaging and QA
by Rahul Sundaram
Hi
For those who have been wanting to improve the quality of releases, get
effective dialogue and responses in bugzilla and work on reducing the
chances for regressions in Fedora updates, here is a good opportunity to
get involved.
http://www.livejournal.com/users/gregdek/2714.html. Contact gregdek AT
redhat.com
There are some low hanging fruits that the community can potentially
tackle in a better way. Every new update is first pushed into
updates-testing repository to enable the community to test and check for
regressions and provide feedback in the fedora-test list and the
relevant bugzilla reports. The amount of feedback at times have been
very low and thats usually ok for the large majority of updates but some
of the them are heavy impact ones like the Kernel or Xorg updates and do
require community testing. Internal testing does not always reveal
regressions in specific chipsets, architecture and hardware . If you
have a spare test machine lying around that you could use and you would
like to tinker and get involved in Fedora, updates-testing and the
Fedora development tree are for you.
General guidelines and instructions are available at :

I have observed that this mailing list is populated by a lot
of very intellegent and informed individuals. Since geography
precludes us getting together for coffee on a regular basis,
I believe these discussions do have merit. Many of the other
discussion lists have a much smaller distribution and often
the insights expressed here would be missed.
I thank the people on this list for their time and energy.

Moving LVM PV to different IDE controller help
by MLists
Recently needed to remove a failing drive from one of my servers. That
drive was a physical volume (/dev/hdd) containing VG1, containing LV1. I
installed a new drive (temporarily) on /dev/hdb created a new volume group
VG2 containing a single logical volume LV1... formatted ext3 and transferred
the data.
Now that the failing drive has been removed from the server I want to move
the new drive from /dev/hdb to /dev/hdd (ie. move th drive to the secondary
IDE controller). My problem is that the system doesn't see the volume group
if I just move the drive. What do I have to do to tell the system to look
for VG2 on /dev/hdd instead of /dev/hdb?
Thanks,

A fair number of people would like to see Linux make inroads into
the business desktop arena. As PC's became popular in the 1980's
Windows had a leg up on the competitors like OS2 because of their
popularity in the consumer market. Unix's were popular among those
who were educated in technical fields because it was freely available
to universities. Inroads made in the consumer market may help
Linux in the business desktop. If nothing else, the lessons learned
in this area will make Linux more polished.
I agree with your statements about companies being deliberately obstructive.
Microsoft has good reason to be obstructive. Also companies like
Symantec, Network Associates (McAfee), and other companies who make
their business working around flaws in Windows have good reason to
see Linux not grow.

I'm curious about that myself, I have other machines very similar to
this that I created with the same kickstart script. I've installed some
other RPM's on this I wonder if one of them some how moved everything
back to passwd? WEIRD. Anyway, thanks guys!

FC4 and Shadow Passwords
by Mike McGrath
I've got an FC4 install with shadow-utils installed but the passwords
are being stored in /etc/passwd and there is no /etc/shadow file. Any
ideas?
