Problems with rpm database
by Carl Reynolds
I just installed Fedora Core 3 x86_64 on a machine and used rpm to get
atrpms-kickcstart for the x86_64 architecture.
When I run
apt-get update
it gives me a lot of warnings like
W:: There are multiple versions of "...."
To disable warning set:
RPM::Allow Duplicated-Warning "false"
I did the following command:
rpm -qa --qf '%{name}\n' | sort | uniq -d | grep -v '^kernel'
It shows 206 duplicate modules in the rpm database.
The duplicates all have the same name and version number. That is, there
are two versions of qt in the database, both with the same version, etc.
I think that the people who made the distribution I'm using left both
the i386 and x86_64 versions of all these packages in the system and rpm
sees both versions.
I tried
rpm -e --nodeps --allmatches packagename
for each duplicated package, but that causes a lot of problems because
after about 20 packages, rpm stops working because I had removed a
package it needs. And there seem to be quite a number of these.
I tried
apt-get -f update
repeatedly and it seemed to clear up the problems until I entered
apt-get dist-upgrade
When I tried
apt-get -f dist-upgrade
repeatedly, it erased all the binaries in /usr/bin
I tried
rm /var/lib/rpm/__db.*
rpmdb --rebuilddb -vv
It rebuilt the database with all the duplicates.
I tried
rpm -e --nodeps --allmatches --repackage akisaurus
and it created aiksaurus-1.2.1-2.i386.rpm and
aiksaurus-1.2.1-2.x86_64.rpm in /var/spool/repackage. Thinking I could
remove each package one at a time and reinstall it from the repackage
directory.
When I tried
rpm -i /var/spool/repackage/aiksaurus-1.2.1-2.x86_64.rpm
It gave me a V3 DSA signature: BAD, key ID 4f2a6fd2
I'm running out of ideas to try. Would someone please tell me how to get
rid of the duplicates from my rpm database?
Thanks,
Carl.

Need help creating CDs that will pass mediacheck
by Dan Trobridge
New to Fedora, but not RH.
Pulled binary ISO's using torrent and all passed md5sum.
I have created several copies of the ISO's using Nero 6 and have tried
several different combos to burn. According to what i have read it
should be as simple as <Record-Burn Image-(Select Image)-Check
Finalize CD-Burn. None have past linux mediacheck yet.
disc1 fails with "...glibc-common-2.3.3-74 cannot be found."
I have 5 disc1s randomly pulled from the spindle, all which fail.
None of the other disc's I have created for Fedora have passed the
mediacheck either.
Thanks for the help.

Re: usb storage devices
by jery_wang
Hello, Ankush
Even before I sent my last message to this list, I was completely up to date.
I am running the latest stable kernel update: kernel-2.6.10-1.760_FC3
I am also running the latest stable update of hotplug: hotplug-2004_04_01-8.1
As I mentioned, I was running both of these when I sent my last message.
Also, my problem is that my devices dissappear, not that they are not
detected. If I unplug a device that has "dissappeared" and plug it into a
different USB2 port, it is immediately detected. Also, if I unplug a device
and plug it back into the same port (I've only tried that after waiting a few
minutes), the device magically reappears. I can't remember though if the
device is actually functional. Also, I am now running a PCI USB2 card, and
I've been using the burner successfully ever since. I just tried to use our
scanner while it was plugged into that PCI USB2 card, and I ended up having
to reboot about five times. When I plugged it back into one of the front
USB2 ports on our machine (this port is connected directly to the mainboard
instead of being a PCI card) the strangest thing happened: I could finally
scan without the scanner hanging. I hate to do it, but I think I will take
the scanner to a machine that I have access to that runs Windows XP. I will
see how it behaves...
If there is a development or testing kernel or hotplug RPM that you think I
should try, please let me know.
Again, our devices get detected and re-detected just fine, the problem is that
they just dissappear....
Steven P. Ulrick
Just to throw my 2 cents into this discussion.
I installed FC3 kernel 2.6.10-1.741 onto my gateway 7200x system.
When i plugged in my usb braille display, it sometimes detects and other times it doesn't.
I ran yum to get fully up to date, and still have the problem.
I just unplugged and re-plugged the display into one of the usb ports on the back of the pc, the /var/logs/messages file shows the following info:

/usr/bin/rmic -- why?
by Joel
What are jar, rmiregistry, and who knows what else doing in /usr/bin ?
I know that everyone just shoves /usr/local/java/sdk/bin (or whatever)
in at the top of $PATH, but I can think of several very good reasons
that is not a good idea. So if there's a good reason, I'd like some
feedback before I post a bug on this.

Canon i470D on FC3
by eScopic
I am trying to print to a Windows networked Canon i470D. I have been
successful using "Printer Configuration" to setup the queue but I am at
a loss when it comes to finding a suitable driver. The best I have
managed was to use an available substitute driver (BJC800) on the Canon
list but this only prints what looks like A5 on and A4 sheet.
Canon do not make Linux drivers available for this printer and googling
got me no where.
Thanks

Strange problems with sshd under fc3 - Rejecting all users but one
by Eric Vought
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
I am having an odd problem with OpenSSH sshd on FC3. I am asking about
the problem here because I think the problem may be outside of sshd
itself. In the end, I am sure I have caused the problem myself, but am
hoping someone else has seen it.
Symptoms:
sshd rejects all users but one (my account) with "*user* rejected
because not in AllowUsers". This message appears in /var/log/secure.
When logging in with ssh, it asks for and appears to reject the
password (even though a public key is configured). The funny thing is
that AllowUsers is *empty*.
Background:
When I installed the server, I immediately created a new user account,
added it to AllowUsers, and turned off root login. I reloaded the
server (service reload sshd) and began connecting as this user. It
worked. Root was, correctly, denied. Now I have added more accounts
and wish to allow login for some of them. In fact, I want to allow
all users and let the shell setting disallow the users it should
(shell=/dev/null). Most of the users have been created by
Webmin/Virtualmin. Two were created with useradd at the prompt
(including the one that *is* allowed to ssh).
At first, I went into Webmin and added another user to the AllowUsers
list and saved it. No effect. I verified that I have set the user's
shell (/bin/zsh,which is in /etc/shells). I forced a reload of sshd. I
verified that the AllowUsers field had been updated in
/etc/ssh/sshd_config.
Next, I went back to Webmin/SSH module and set it to allow all logins
(the ones I do not want have shells set to /dev/null). I looked at
sshd_config and verified that AllowUsers had been removed from the
file (the man page says that it defaults to allow all). No good. I
reloaded sshd and still no good.
The original user account is still let in. No new account, whether
created in Webmin or by useradd can log in. The original account has
its personal group and wheel. Of the other accounts being rejected, at
least one is also in wheel. I do not see any other related messages in
the logs.
I have also tried setting AllowUsers to "*" and I have tried replacing
the *original config file* from the RPM with *no change*.
Questions:
1) Why is sshd not allowing all users with an empty AllowUsers?
2) If it is not defaulting to allow all, why let the original account in?
3) Why did the original config file not reset the behavior (!)?
I am forced to conclude that sshd is simply not reading
/etc/ssh/sshd_config, though it is reloading (I get disconnected each
time) and I can find no other file on the system which it might be
reading instead. In particular, I have gone through every file on the
system in which the original account name appears looking for a ghost
allow list somewhere with no result. Now I am getting very confused.
