memory.c - bad pmd - x86_64

I have a system with a Tyan 2885 motherboard (S2885-ANRF) that uses dual
Opteron 244 processors. Each processor has 1 GB of memory for a total
of 2 GB. I am using a SATA HD. I am running the latest stock release of
the SMP version of the FC3 kernel for x86_64. uname -a output follows:

The computer is worldly node for a small cluster of computers. It is
resposible for building a code that is run on the cluster. A shell
script is used to start the build process. Occasionally when the script
is started it crashes and the following messages are place in

If the shell script is started immediately after the crash it works.
I have been seeing "bad pmd" messages for quite some time and the shell
script that builds the code is not the only event that triggers them.
I'm pretty sure the memory in the machine is fine. I have noticed a
thread on linux-kernel list discussing the problem, but haven't had a
chance to post there yet.
I have appended the output of lspci and lsmod to the end of this
message.
Has anyone on this list noticed similar messages?
The linux-kernel thread indicates the problem is x86_64 specific and
seems to be hilighted by Tyan HW.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

sync'ing & editing Palm device data under FC3
by Thomas Tschoellitsch
How could I sync a Palm device under FC3? Apparently there's no
version of the original HotSync Manager (although it might work using
WINE, which I haven't tried yet).
Aside of purely sync'ing I'd be interested in editing my data, too. So
if there was something similar to Palm Desktop for FC3/ that you could
recommend, please do.

web multimedia procols.
by Robin Laing
Hello,
Today I tried to access an online tutorial for a product that we are
using. I found that I could not access the multimedia files or
download them as expected.
In Mozilla I kept getting and error about an unrecognized protocol.
The link was similar to this.
mss://www.someserver.com/multimedia/thisfile.wmv
The protocol error was related to the mss://
I have searched for any information on this protocol with no success
and I need to find out if this is one of those strange MS only things.
I think it has to do with streaming the video or data but not sure.

Intermittent sshd issue
by Alex Greg
Hi,
One of our machines has a problem every couple of weeks where it stops
accepting new SSH connections. Existing ones work fine, but any
attempt to create a new one fails with this error:
ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host
Restarting the sshd fixes the problem for another couple of weeks, but
it keeps re-occurring. Any pointers as to how this could be fixed (for
good!) would be very much appreciated. The machine is running Fedora
Core 1.

Yum "problem"
by Sasa Stupar
Hi!
Before I didn't have any problems with updating my FC3 using yum but now
I got this issue about dependencies:
---------
--> Processing Dependency: clamav = 0.85.1-1.1.fc3.rf for package: clamd
--> Finished Dependency Resolution
Error: Missing Dependency: clamav = 0.85.1-1.1.fc3.rf is needed by
package clamd
-----------
However, I have clamav allready installed:
------------
# rpm -qa | grep clam
clamd-0.85.1-1.1.fc3.rf
clamav-0.85.1-1.1.fc3.rf
clamav-milter-0.85.1-1.1.fc3.rf
clamav-db-0.85.1-1.1.fc3.rf
---------------
I have tried with "yum clean all" and restarted update with "yum -y
update" but still the same problem.
I use the following repositories:
dag
extras
base
updates-released
Is there something wrong with yum or what?

output of tar
by Götz Reinicke
Hi,
I have some backupscripts, which save the backup onto an NFS-mounted
share. From time to time, the backup quits with an error:
/bin/tar: /export/servers/home/home-Sun.tar: Cannot open: Input/output error
/bin/tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
How can I get more info on why the backup failes?
Any ideas?

Upgrade to FC4 from FC3 without having to re download and then burn cds and recreate partition?
by Sam Johnson
So, all I have to do is download the FC4 boot.iso, burn it, boot from
the disc, and then what?
Also, someone mentioned a hard drive install. Seems like a good
idea... How does that work?
I found a boot.iso on the Fedora download server.
