Firefox for Fedora
by Dotan Cohen
I want to install Firefox 1.5 but Yum does not provide it. So I looked
for rpms on the net and found a few for Fedora, but none are in
Hebrew. Before I install from the oficial tarball, I have some
concerns that I would like some input on:
1) If I install from the tarball, yum will no longer update Firefox.
Can I tell yum to maintain it anyway?
2) I did locate and found that most ff files are in
/usr/lib/firefox-1.0.7/ . Can I just unpack the new 1.5 tarball in
/usr/lib/firefox-1.5/ and have them live side by side?
3) I currently can type the command "firefox" in the command line to
start Firefox. Will this change to start 1.5 if I install them side by
side? If not, how do I correct it?
Thank you.

Dell D810 thermal problem ... still
by Rod Haper
Is anyone else running FC4 on a Dell D810 laptop? I'm still having
problems with thermal shutdown at 40-41 deg C. i8kmon (and my ears)
confirms that the cooling fan is running at full speed. If I boot
KNOPPIX, I never have a thermal shutdown even when the temperature goes
as high as 55 deg C for an extended period. I have not been able to
figure out what KNOPPIX (a Debian derivative) is doing different from
FC4. I've been struggling with this for over two weeks now and I'm not
any closer to a solution. I know Dell laptop BIOS and hardware sensors
can be pretty kinky but this is reaching the point of desperation. Does
anybody have any ideas, suggestions and/or experience with this problem
that can help me get it resolved?

Halleluiah ATI & OpenGL
by Robert Bell
Just want to share a positive note, after months of fighting with ATI
drivers (from ATI and Livna) I could not get GL support on my 9800 PRO
in a dual head configuration on my FC4 x86_64. I just happened to give
it another shot before buying an nVidia card. I downloaded the latest
version 8.20.08 (12/08/05) from ATI and viola, finally 3D support. I
lost the mouse scroll wheel when it wrote xorg.conf, I guess I'll figure
that out when I diff the config files.
Just wanted to share. This was one of two remaining gripes. Now if I
could find a decent mp3 juke box app . . .

evolution copy
by Edward Beranek
Howdy,
Running FC4, with patches. Using Gnome. When attempting
to copy a word from an email message (evolution) by right
clicking mouse and selecting 'copy', nothing appears to
be copied. If the same word is highlighted and then
'copy' is selected from the edit menu, it works. You can
even right click and paste. (The message is one that is
located in the inbox, and displayed in the normal window
section of Evolution. Right clicking upon a email that is
being created to send seems to work fine.)
Is there a fix for this? Appears to only be a problem
with the mouse menu, and not Evolutions edit menu.

Re: Is 64 bit Fedora OK? With which CPU?

Doesn't work at all, ie no tricks, hacks, patches....?

Sorry for not being more specific. What I mean is that this will be a home desktop workstation:
1) when I'm *at* the keyboard, doing my usual tasks: OpenOffice, www
browsing, compiling software, video editing... (no gaming,
maybe just Celestia, wwww.shatter.net/celestia/) I want it as fast as
possible, as long as it doesn't require huge/noisy fan(s).
2) When I leave the PC on, but unattended, that is it has _nothing_ to do
except download email every X minutes, it would be great if it could go
(even with custom scripting, settings, whatever) in some power saving
mode where it dissipates as *little* power as possible, both to save
money and to have it *really* silent!
So maybe the question is now, what is the best 64 bit CPU/Chipset combination for this scenario?
Thanks,
Webber

xine vs v4l question
by Gene Heskett
Greetings all;
In my quest to find something with a bit more ability that tvtime, I
had yumi install all of the xine stuffs I could find in its menu's.
xine looks as if I might work, except the v4l tab says it can't find a
suitable device. Obviously I'm missing something, but I don't believe
its device drivers because they are all loaded (cx88 stuffs) and
tvtime works great.
So whats next? What am I missing?
FWIW, I also have xine-hd installed from tarballs, and its not capable
of accessing my card either, never has managed to find it.

People having trouble with vz bouncing email to me should add the word
'online' between the 'verizon', and the dot which bypasses vz's
stupid bounce rules. I do use spamassassin too. :-)

Hang with X and FC4 2.6.14 kernels
by Marc Deslauriers
Hi all,
Since FC4's kernel got bumped to 2.6.14, my system hangs while starting
X. The last lines in the log before it locks up hard are:
Dec 28 17:44:05 mdlinux kernel: [drm] Initialized drm 1.0.0 20040925
Dec 28 17:44:05 mdlinux kernel: ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:01:06.0[A] ->
Link [LNKC] -> GSI 9 (level, low) -> IRQ 9
Dec 28 17:44:05 mdlinux kernel: [drm] Initialized radeon 1.17.0 20050311
on minor 0:
Dec 28 17:44:05 mdlinux kernel: [drm] Loading R200 Microcode
I have got a PCI Radeon 9200SE 5964 in a Dell Dimension 2400.
All 2.6.14 updates have this problem. Going back to 2.6.13 updates fixes
the issue.
Does anyone have a fix for this, before I bugzilla it?
Thanks
Marc.
