FC4: problems with kernel-2.6.17-1.2139_FC4

Dear all,
I have recently updated the kernel of one of our servers. The new kernel
(2.6.17-1.2139_FC4) appears not to recognize the host controller. Thus,
some devices, such as the USB controller, do not work. When the new
kernel is used, lspci does not even show the host bridge and the USB
controller; here is the result of lspci when the new kernel is used:
00:02.0 RAID bus controller: Silicon Image, Inc. SiI 0649 Ultra ATA/100
PCI to ATA Host Controller (rev 02)
00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5702X
Gigabit Ethernet (rev 02)
00:04.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage XL (rev 27)
00:05.0 System peripheral: Compaq Computer Corporation Advanced System
Management Controller
To make things work I needed to roll back to the old kernel release
(2.6.16-1.2115_FC4). Here is the result of a lspci when the old kernel
is used:
00:00.0 Host bridge: Broadcom GCNB-LE Host Bridge (rev 32)
00:00.1 Host bridge: Broadcom GCNB-LE Host Bridge
00:02.0 RAID bus controller: Silicon Image, Inc. SiI 0649 Ultra ATA/100
PCI to ATA Host Controller (rev 02)
00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5702X
Gigabit Ethernet (rev 02)
00:04.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage XL (rev 27)
00:05.0 System peripheral: Compaq Computer Corporation Advanced System
Management Controller
00:0f.0 ISA bridge: Broadcom CSB6 South Bridge (rev a0)
00:0f.1 IDE interface: Broadcom CSB6 RAID/IDE Controller (rev a0)
00:0f.2 USB Controller: Broadcom CSB6 OHCI USB Controller (rev 05)
00:0f.3 Host bridge: Broadcom GCLE-2 Host Bridge
Has anybody experienced anything similar? Is there any new module I need
to load for the 2.6.17 kernel to work?
I thank you in advance for your help.
Best regards,
Alberto Ferrante

Install from boot.iso - using pmcia card
by Anne Wilson
I'm still trying to find a way to get FC6t1 onto my old laptop. It seems that
it is not happy to boot from home-recorded dvds, although home-recorded cds
are fine, so I've now burned boot.iso.
The problem now is that it doesn't seem to have a driver for the Netgear FA411
PMCIA ethernet card. (I know it's fully supported, as I have been running
FC4 on the laptop.) So far, my attempts at googling have failed to identify
the chipset used, so short of trying one or two at random, what else can I
try?

FC5 kernel update to 2.6.17-1.2139_FC5 causing USB broadband problems
by Motor
My PC uses a Thompson/Alcatel Speedtouch USB 330 modem to connect to
Tiscali broadband in the UK. It's been working fine until the recent
kernel update to version: kernel-2.6.17-1.2139_FC5.
Now after upgrading via yum, the broadband seems to connect ok and work
for about a minute and then stop sending and receiving. If I reboot and
use the previous kernel-2.6.16-1.2133_FC5, then it works perfectly
normally with no problems. I've tried switching between the two kernel
versions half a dozen times and seen the same behaviour each time, which
seems to rule out random ISP mess ups.

Kickstart set hostname issues FC5[Scanned]
by Chris Bradford
Hi guys,
I'm trying to setup a way to manually enter a hostname as part of the
post install script in my Kickstart file. The process works, but the
hostname does not register on our DNS servers *unless* I enter it on the
Linux client under System > Administration > Network > Devices > Edit >
DHCP Settings > Hostname.
The script I am using is:
%post
#switch to a virtual terminal
exec < /dev/tty3 > /dev/tty3
chvt 3
clear
#Get Hostname
echo -n "Enter Hostname: "
echo ""
read hostname
#Set Hostname
cat << EOF >> /etc/sysconfig/network~
NETWORKING=yes
HOSTNAME=$hostname
EOF
cat << EOF >> /etc/hosts~
127.0.0.1 $hostname localhost.localdomain localhost
EOF
mv /etc/hosts~ /etc/hosts
mv /etc/sysconfig/network~ /etc/sysconfig/network
#echo HOSTNAME=$hostname >> /etc/sysconfig/network
hostname $HOSTNAME
echo "Set Hostname....."
#Switch Back to tty1
exec < /dev/tty1 > /dev/tty1
chvt 1
The only thing I can assume is that the hostname is also stored in
another file? Everything works fine after I add the hostname into the
DHCP settings, until I do that the machine is unresolvable.
Any ideas?
Cheers
-Chris

Paul,
SELinux is in enforcing mode.
The output of:
# ls -lZ /var/log/yum.log $(which kyum)
IS:
[root@corefive ~]# ls -lZ /var/log/yum.log $(which kyum)
-rwxr-xr-x root root system_u:object_r:bin_t /usr/bin/kyum
-rw------- root root system_u:object_r:rpm_log_t /var/log/yum.log
[root@corefive ~]#

Yum update question
by Anne Wilson
I would have expected that running 'update' would query updates-released, but
it appears to query every repo defined. Does it actually offer updates from
all of them? Problems with one repo cause update to fail, hence the
question.

Re: kernel-2.6.17-1.2139_FC5 breaks promise drivers for _non-raid_ SATA

I looked at that one, and I don't believe I'm a complete duplicate. For
one thing, I'm not running an SMP kernel, and for another, I'm not using
SATA RAID, just a single SATA drive. Lastly, I'm using a Promise SATA
controller while the bug reporter was using an Intel Corporation 82801ER
(ICH5R). Similar, yes, but also very different.

This I can do, though I find the web interface to the mailing list
somewhat klunky and badly in need of a better thread-following model.

Respin FC5 install with updated kernel
by Sam Varshavchik
Can someone point me to a guide for respinning the installation FC5 DVD with
an updated kernel? It looks like 2.6.17 is the first kernel I can boot on
my x86_64 hardware since 2.6.13, which prevented me from upgrading from FC4
to FC5.
I need not only to have the updated kernel installed, but also boot Anaconda
with an updated kernel image.
Also, it looks like FC5 has a unified UP and SMP kernel -- correct?
