Re: Dynamic DNS and failed journal

Thanks for your comment Paul
The thing is, when bind chroots, it should have writeable access to
its own /var/named, which as far as the host is concerned, is
actually /var/named/chroot/var/named.
Why should it have write access there? It doesn't by default, and
doesn't normally need it (remember that bind is running as user named,
not as root).
its needs to know where to load its zone information from, ie.
/var/named, then chroots.
No, it chroots first. So you should put your DDNS zone file in
/var/named/chroot/var/named/slaves (I expect you have a symlink
/var/named/slaves -> /var/named/chroot/var/named/slaves btw).
I cant see how that should be a problem for bind to write to its own
/var/named directory. Anyway I tried it, and changed options
directory /var/named to /var/named/slaves .... naturally, bind
couldnt find zone information ...
Don't change the main directory in the options clause, change the file
location for your DDNS zone in its zone clause.
So you have something like:
zone "example.com" IN {
...
file "slaves/example.com";
...
};
Paul.
Well that doesnt work either .... just for a test ... i chmodded all of /var/named to named.named .... stilll the permission error ... I am not using SELinux by the way

I get that when i $yum update. Maybe I'm thinking wrong but if yum
update won't work then I won't be able to update everything and/or
anything that is remotely related to whatever has the missing dep.
Correct?

i enabled autofs for smb. when i access the mountpoints, the are
mounted perfectly. and after the configured timeout, they are
unmounted again. but right after, they are mounted again. i suspect
some scanning-daemon, but i cannot point the finger on it.

fedora / redhat based OS compile.
by Gregory Machin
Hi..
I'm playing with Endian Fire wall wich is REL4 / Centos / Fedora based .. I
want to recomple thier kernerl to run on embedded hardware, and add / alter
freatures but they have no documentation on doing this, and they are not
very generious with this IP wich I can understand ...
this is the most info that is avalible on their forum
"
It's based on RedHat Enterprise v4.... From a previous forum post:
"endian firewall is based on source rpm's you find here:
ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/enterprise/4/en/os/i386/SRPMS/
in fact, those are the same as CentOS 4 uses. so you can safely use centos,
fedora or redhat rpm's on endian firewall. you need only to take care about
dependencies and some differences we still have because of the LFS system
of
ipcop (like /etc/rc.d, and so on)
if you like to build your own packages, you can do this on a
centos/redhat/fedora
machine or you can use the devel RPM's which we provide here:
http://www.endian.it/en/community/download/updates/ in order to create a
build
jail."
https://sourceforge.net/forum/message.php?msg_id=3832737
Not exactly sure on how to build it from source though, community
documentation is a bit lacking at the moment.
"
My question is how do I create jail build environment on fc 5 to do the
package / os build .. ??
Many Thanks

KMix volume sliders
by Ashley M. Kirchner
I have an Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 in my system running FC5.
In KMix, everything seems to fall under the PCM (and Master) volume
sliders. How can I fix it so that when I'm playing MIDI files it routes
through the correct volume slider (whichever that might be) and when I'm
playing MP3, it goes through the PCM one?
Looking at all the KMix channels available to me, I have:
Wave Center, Wave LFE, Wave Surround, Master, Headphone, Bass, Treble
(which incidentally don't do anything either one), 3D Control Sigmatel -
Depth, PCM, Center, LFE, PC Speaker, and AC97. Under the Input tab
there's a whole slew of sliders, and under Switches tab there are a few
more.
Everything seems to get routed through the PCM channel and I can
control volume using that slider and the Master volume slider. When I
used this card under WinXP, I was able to get MIDI through the MIDI
channel (or Synth), MP3/Wave through a separate one, and the PC speaker
through a different one, so I could individually control each one. Is
this possible under unix?

udev: BUG: spinlock bad magic on CPU#0, udevd/447 (Tainted:P )
by Antonio Olivares
Dear List Users,
I have successfully installed Fedora 5 on a
shuttleX machine, AMD 2700 XP processor. I updated to
kernel-2.6.17-1.2157_FC5 and everything was working
beautifully and then all of a sudden the machine
froze. Could not CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE, could not
shutdown. I was surfing the net and this happened. I
decided to reset. When I reset the machine it gave me
the message
Starting
udev: BUG: spinlock bad magic on CPU#0, udevd/447
(Tainted:P )
lock: c06e07d4, .magic: c06eo7d4, .owner:{weird
symbol goes here} ...
Bug: spinlock lockup on CPU#0, udev/447 cobeo7d4
(Tainted: P).
It stayed there leaving me no choice but to press and
hold the power button till it shutdown. I let it stay
off for a little and I turned it back on and it let me
through with no error message as the previous one.
What does this error mean?
Is the CPU dying little by little?
Thanks for your valuable time,
Antonio

Internet Connection Failure
by jery_wang
I have a problem with my internet connection. I just recently configured my Linksys router with a "WEP" key and secured it on Windows XP. Here is what I did:
1. I opened up my web browser and typed in 192.168.1.1
2. Typed in username and password and logged in.
3. Went to wireless settings and gave it a WEP key.
4. Saved it and I exit out of browser.
5. Went to my wireless configurations and saw that it was secured and had a WEP key which is what I want. Internet seems ok.
Everything seems to be working fine on Windows after I configured it. But when I boot to Fedora Core 4, I can't connect to the net. I know that the configuration some how had an affect. Anyway, I normally would type in "/sbin/ifup wlan0" in terminal to activate the internet but it doesn't work this time. It gave me the following error:
"Determining IP information for wlan0.....failed"
I don't know what to do or where to begin to fix this. I have a Linksys router and I use Netgear MA111.
