smbmount ?
by Jeffrey Ross
looking for either smb mount or its replacement in FC6
running "yum whatprovides smbmount" shows me that samba contains the man
page but there is no match for smbmount.
running mount -t smbfs gives me unknown filesystem type.
samba is installed.

Managing print queues
by James Wilkinson
Hello, all you happy people.
I'm sure I'm missing something here -- how are you supposed to manage
print queues in FC6 without dropping to a terminal?
For example, suppose you've sent something to print, realise the
printer's out of paper, and decide you'll do without the print -- how do
you cancel the job?
In a terminal, it's easy -- lpq shows you the outstanding jobs, and lprm
deletes them. Assuming it's *your* job, you don't even need to be root.
But there doesn't seem to be an obvious GUI to handle that, apart from
http://localhost:631 (the CUPS web interface).
For what it's worth, the main desktop is Gnome, but I'd be interested in
any GUI.
Thanks,
James.

How to shed those annoying "language packs" in OO
by J.Moore
Once upon a time, I did something (don't remember what now) to delete
all of the language packs for Open Office. Some time later (perhaps
during an upgrade), they came back :(
The annoying thing about them is that they gobble up hundreds of
megabytes of space on my HD and bandwidth during 'yum update's.
How do I get rid of these language packs?
Thanks,
Jay

How to install fedora using ISO images on another machine
by Doctor Who
I think I may have an issue with the CD drive on a machine that I want
to install Fedora on. So I was thinking of putting the ISO images on
another machine and make them available via http (or NFS).
Assuming I have a directory like this with the ISOs, what do I do
during install to point to these remote images as the install source?
Thanks.

reconfigure monitor help
by linuxmaillists@charter.net
FC6 KDE I cannot find an icon any where in my menu tree.
What is the name of the command to tell the OS what monitor
I am using?
The back lite went out on my LCD so I had to change to one
of my old CRTs. :(

OT: corrupted FATs on an external drive
by peter kostov
Hi,
I have a Samsung mp3 player that doesn't want to format his drive.
When I run fsck on it I get:
# fsck.vfat -rtlV -v /dev/sdb1
dosfsck 2.11 (12 Mar 2005)
dosfsck 2.11, 12 Mar 2005, FAT32, LFN
Checking we can access the last sector of the filesystem
Boot sector contents:
System ID "MSDOS5.0"
Media byte 0xf8 (hard disk)
512 bytes per logical sector
4096 bytes per cluster
1 reserved sector
First FAT starts at byte 512 (sector 1)
2 FATs, 16 bit entries
126464 bytes per FAT (= 247 sectors)
Root directory starts at byte 253440 (sector 495)
512 root directory entries
Data area starts at byte 269824 (sector 527)
63127 data clusters (258568192 bytes)
63 sectors/track, 255 heads
50 hidden sectors
505550 sectors total
Starting check/repair pass.
Both FATs appear to be corrupt. Giving up.
I have tried mkdosfs with no luck.
I will appreciate very much if anyone can tell mi what to do to get it
back to work.

what happened to KPILOT in KDEPIM-3.5.6 (Fedora 6 update) ?
by Marcello M. Pavan
Greetings
KPILOT has been a staple app of mine for some time to sync my treo 650 with
Kontact. But suddenly is disappeared from the latest KDEPIM-3.5.6 in the
last Fedora Core 6 update (accesed via Yum).
can anyone tell me what is going on ? an exhaustive web search (including
Fedora forums and mailing lists) has yielded nothing so far.
your help is much appreciated, and very much required. life is tougher
without my Treo and Kontact in sync ...
cheers,
marcello
