SMB Permissions
by David Frascone
I have been running samba for some time, but I can't seem to get permissions
right for the following:
My file server has two users, me and my wife. I'd like to make 3 shares,
plus a home directory:
/media (rw to me and my wife, ro for guests)
/public (rw to me and my wife, ro for guests)
/private (rw to me and my wife, no other access)
And, normal (rw) to owners of /home/USER.
However, I run into tons of permissions problems when I create a file, and
she reads it, and vice versa.
So, the actual questions:
1) How do I implement a "guest" account? Make a third account?
2) Is there any way to have both accounts (mine and my wife) create files
with permissions 777 when we write to shared space, but normal permissions
(700) when we write to our home directories?
Guess that's about it. Thanks in advance,
-Dave

Handling Updates...
by semi linux
I'm looking at moving to F7 for our next generation HW. As an
investigation into the running of F7, I installed it on our old HW to
check it's functionality and prep for the changes.
Right away I got "BUG: warning at
kernel/softirq.c:138/local_bh_enable() (Not tainted)". This bug has
been reported and fixed
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=240982)...
The end result is that I have to update the kernel.
The question :: If I'm going to update, how can I freeze on one
particular update (so I ship the same thing today as I do in 1 year)?
We use kickstart already, so updates can be scripted easily enough but
I would imagine that Glibc/gcc and other updates should occur at the
same time as the kernel - What's the proper way to stop this from
being a moving target? Do I just download everything today and hope
it's a good freeze point while scripting it into our kickstart files?
Anyone here solved this problem before?

F7 kernel 2.6.22.1-27/33 resume issue w/ Acer TM6460
by Patrick Lists
*** resent with proper date/time. apologies for taking you back to '88 ***
Hi all,
I'm having quite a challenge getting my Acer TM6460 to resume from
suspend with kernel 2.6.22.1-27 (and-33) and using the vesa driver for
X. It worked fine with up-to-date FC6:
- suspend works with # pm-suspend --quirk-s3-mode
- resume fails. The screen remains black (no backlit) and the HD led
comes on the first time but from a similar problem with an Acer
Ferrari 4005 I know it must flicker afterward which it does not.
So I went to the pages at:
http://people.freedesktop.org/~hughsient/quirk/quirk-suspend-index.html
and followed the advice.
The debug info is:
[root@localhost ~]# cat dmesg.txt | grep "hash matches"
hash matches drivers/base/power/resume.c:28
hash matches device 0000:09:04.1
This device is the cardbus bridge:
[root@localhost ~]# cat dmesg.txt | grep "0000:09:04.1"
PCI: Bus 10, cardbus bridge: 0000:09:04.1
PCI: Enabling device 0000:09:04.1 (0080 -> 0083)
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:09:04.1[A] -> GSI 20 (level, low) -> IRQ 20
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:09:04.1 to 64
Yenta: CardBus bridge found at 0000:09:04.1 [1025:010d]
hash matches device 0000:09:04.1
I have no idea if this indicates a problem with the cardbus or not.
Afaict the module list below shows no related module.

Installation of VMware-server
by sizo nsibande
I keep on failing to point the vmware-any-any-update to the kernel
header files yet I am sure I have taken all the steps that should
ensure that I have those headers. This is the message that
vmware-any-any-update gives me and has me ultimately stuck:
###############################################################
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running
kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]
###############################################################
Have any of you installed VMware-server on Fedora 7? If so please
assist me in the same light!

questions on how to install Fedora 7 from downloaded iso
by Darlene Wallach
Because my BIOS will not boot from a SCSI CD-ROM, I have
to jump through some minor hoops to install Fedora.
Here are notes I have from when Conor Daly advised me of the
hoops through which I had to jump:
Here are instructions I used to install Fedora Core 3
a few years ago. Note I cannot boot from scsi cdrom.
[start instructions]
re: I want to install Fedora Core 3 but can't boot from scsi cdrom
1. Loopmount diskboot.img
2. Copy vmlinuz and initrd.img (with unique names) to
your /boot directory
3. Configure grub (you should be on grub with RH7.3) to
boot from the copied kernel
4. At boot time type 'linux askmethod' and you'll get to
specify the CDROM
I used this method to install FC3 online. Just downloaded
the boot.iso and chose 'ftp' as the install method...
or
1. Copy boot.iso to your hard disk
2. Configure grub to boot from the iso [0]
3. At boot time type 'linux askmethod' and you'll get to
specify the CDROM
This assumes that there is a suitable scsi driver available
in the initrd.img. If not, you can go about it this way.
1. copy the contents of the CDs to the hard disk (second
and subsequent CDs' rpm files go in the RPMS directory
copied from the first CD
2. Use either of the above boot methods and specify 'hard
disk' as the source.
NB. Make sure you copy the CD contents to a filesystem that
is _not_ going to be formatted at install time otherwise
there'll be nothing there for the installer to use!
Conor
[0] Booting direct from an iso is mentioned here:
http://www.linux.ie/lists/pipermail/ilug/2005-February/022062.html
Basically, it's:
grub> chainloader hd(0,0)/image.iso
grub> boot
-- Conor Daly conor[dot]daly[at]oceanfree[dot]net
[end instructions]
This is what I have in grub:
title Fedora Core 3 install
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-fc3-install ro root=/dev/hda3
initrd /initrd-fc3-install.img
title Fedora Core 3 install text askmethod
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-fc3-install ro root=/dev/hda3
initrd /initrd-fc3-install.img
I don't remember which of the two I used to install
Fedora Core 3.
I downloaded the DVD iso and mounted it.
$ ls /tmp/mountpoint/isolinux/
boot.cat initrd.img options.msg splash.jpg vmlinuz
boot.msg isolinux.bin param.msg TRANS.TBL
general.msg isolinux.cfg rescue.msg vesamenu.c32
So I plan on copying initrd.img and vmlinuz to /boot
cp /tmp/mountpoint/isolinux/initrd.img /boot/initrd-f7-install.img
cp /tmp/mountpoint/vmlinuz /boot/vmlinuz-f7-install
and modifying grub to:
title Fedora 7 install
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-f7-install ro root=/dev/hda3
initrd /initrd-f7-install.img
What I'm not sure of is if the install will allow me to
access the external hard drive for the installation.
Have I made any mistakes in what I plan on doing?
Thank you for your attention and patience,
Darlene Wallach

Upgrade To FC 7: Unable to mount /tmp
by Ben Mohilef
We are trying to upgrade an old hunk'o'junk dual athlon box from FC5 to
FC7 using a DVD. Unfortunately the installer claims that it can not mount
/dev/hda15 as /tmp and aborts. /tmp mounts nomally on FC5 ( not nosuec
or noexec) and I can't find any unusual attributes. It fscks cleanly as do all
the other partitions.
There are a spectacular dearth of diagnostics here. The FC5 works
flawlessly. Has anyone else seen this problem? Am I overlooking the
obvious somewhere? A clean install is just not practical on this box.
Thanks.
