System lockup problem when adding more memory - FC5
by Cokey de Percin
I have an older dual processor server that has been happily running FC5
since it was released. It currently has 4G of memory and has the
capacity for 8G using 1G sticks. Recently I was given 2 1G sticks and
tried to upgrade the system. The system recognizes the memory and
boots, but then locks up with:
exec of initj(/sbin/init) failed: Exec format error.
Removing the memory clears the problem. I have also tried some 512
sticks and they also cause the same problem. Essentially anything over
4G regardless of the how that's arrived at will cause the lockup.
Looking for any hints/ideas.
Tnx
Cokey

evolution-2.10.2-2.fc7 crashes if you set a search folder with a relative date
by Tim
Can someone else see if their FC7's Evolution also crashes when trying
to set up a search folder that applies relative to a date?
Create a new search folder.
Pick the option to apply a rule for "date received".
Click on the button where you'd select a date.
That's when the crash happens for me. Evolution on FC6 works for me.

FC6 Nautilus CD/DVD creator problem
by Paul Erickson
I am having trouble with the Nautilus CD/DVD creator on one of my FC6
boxes. When I put a blank
disk in the HP 8100, the CD/DVD creator window comes up, but when I try
to write the files to the
disk, I keep getting an "Insert a writable or blank disc" message. No
matter how many times I click the
"OK" the message keeps coming back. I know the hardware is ok, because
K3B works fine.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone have F6 XSANE working with a HP6300 Scanner?
by Reg Clemens
I havent used my scanner in AGES, and during that time have had
a failure on my SCSI card, so I had to move the scanner from
SCSI -> USB.
However, while it USED TO WORK (and that may have been in f4
or earlier) with f6 the scan head in the scanner never moves.
So either my scanner has decided to die, or the software doesnt know
how to deal with this scanner any more (tho it says it does) via a USB.
Anyone out there running F6, with SANE and XSANE and a HP6300?

Need help w/ bcm43xx-mac80211 issues? (ndiswrapper considered harmful)
by John W. Linville
First, the issue that lots of people are having...if you are getting
the "YOUR FIRMWARE IS TOO OLD" issue, I recommend that you follow
this procedure:
# you need to be root
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/sources/broadcom-wl-4.80.53.0.tar.bz2
tar -xjvf broadcom-wl-4.80.53.0.tar.bz2
bcm43xx-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware/ broadcom-wl-4.80.53.0/kmod/wl_apsta.o
That should fix things for most people. However, some people still
need/want to use the older driver even on devices that are (or should
be) supported by the newer driver. If you are in this situation,
I recommend this procedure:
# save the file attached to this email as "bcm43xx-old-config"
# you need to be root
./bcm43xx-old-config
The internals of that file look a little hairy, so I don't want people
having to type the commands themselves... :-) Anyway, the second
procedure is ONLY for those who have completed the first procedure and
find the bcm43xx-mac80211 driver to be unacceptable. This includes
_some_ bcm4318 users and apparently a _few_ bcm4306 users. This should
keep most of you from having to use an unsupportable alternative
like ndiswrapper.
Hth!

The case against LVM
by Timothy Murphy
I've been using LVM on one computer for some time,
without any real problems.
However, I've decided that it causes unnecessary complications,
as some applications do not seem to accept the LVM devices,
while I don't find any real advantages to compensate.
I thought it would simplify changing the sizes of partitions,
but as it happens I never need to do this
with today's enormous disks.
I wonder if that is the general experience?

To get my camera (JVC GR-DVL510EA) working in F7, I did the
following...
sudo modprobe fw-ohci
Connect the camera.
Change permissions on device file - see below.
Start kino - The camera should be shown and operational now.
I've also changed permission on file "/dev/fwX" (/dev/fw0 on my machine)
to allow non-root access to the firewire device.
I've edited "/etc/security/console.perms.d/50-default.perms" and then I
ran "sudo pam_console_apply" afterwards to achieve this.

Python, RPM error
by Austin Isler
I apologize if this is in the archives, and I missed it.
I updated rpm a while back with:
# yum -y update rpm
I believe it installed a python2.4 package as well. Ever since then, I
have had problems with python and rpm. I get this error when trying to
use yum:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/yum", line 6, in ?
import yummain
File "/usr/share/yum-cli/yummain.py", line 23, in ?
import yum
File "/usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages/yum/__init__.py", line 21, in ?
import rpm
ImportError: No module named rpm
Appreciate the help,
Austin
