Problem with bcm43xx-80211 Revisited
by awrobinson-ml@nc.rr.com
Whenst last we left our hero, I had let yum upgrade my kernel on FC6 to
2.6.22.1-32.fc6, which required bcm43xx drivers version 4. However,
bcm43xx-fwcutter had not been upgraded and would not handle the new
drives. Moving forward, last night I updated to the latest
bcm43xx-fwcutter and extracted the version 4 drivers. My laptop's
wireless now works but not at boot time. I have to run 'modprobe
bcm43xx-mac80211' and 'ifup eth1' to get an actual network connection. I
tried to illustrate the situation with the output below. It seems like
there is a timing or order issue.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong or need to do differently to get the
new version of bcm43xx working on my laptop?
Thanks!

dd and cp -a
by Karl Larsen
I have this computer on /dev/sda and the new hard drive is /dev/sdb.
This F7 is all in /dev/sda6 and I want to copy /dev/sda6 to /dev/sdb5. I
tried dd but it failed I think because /dev/sdb5 is smaller 10 GB than
/dev/sda6 which is 30 GB. It ended with an error message.
So back to cp -a but there is a hitch. I redid /sdb5 with another
ext3 file system and I can mount it to /mnt on this computer. So it is
easy to cp all from /dev/sda6 to /dev/sdb5 but, with a simple # cp -a /
/mnt it will do all that fine but then want to copy /mnt to the new
/dev/sdb5.
Does anyone know a secret that will work? I will read man cp again :-)

problem with building kdemultimedia RPM package for mp3 support
by Mohammed El-Afifi
I'm using fedora 7, 64-bit edition. I'm trying to add the mp3 support for xine. I'm using for this purpose the packages kdemultimedia-3.5.6-7.fc7.src.rpm and kdemultimedia-3.5.6.tar.bz2. I tweaked the file /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/kdemultimedia.spec a little to enable mp3. I'm rebuilding a binary RPM package for kdemultimedia using the command:
rpmbuild -bb /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/kdemultimedia.spec
The building process goes fine until I get the following error:
.libs/xinePlayObject_impl.o: In function `xine_shared_init':
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/kdemultimedia-3.5.6-patched/xine_artsplugin/xinePlayObject_impl.cpp:113: undefined reference to `pthread_create'
I get this error along with some other errors all related to pthread. The last command in the build process that preceded this error was
/bin/sh ../libtool --silent --mode=link --tag=CXX g++ -DNDEBUG -DNO_DEBUG -O2 -O2 -g -pipe -Wall -Wp,-D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 -fexceptions -fstack-protector --param=ssp-buffer-size=4 -m64 -mtune=generic -fno-exceptions -fno-check-new -fno-common -DQT_CLEAN_NAMESPACE -DQT_NO_ASCII_CAST -DQT_NO_STL -DQT_NO_COMPAT -DQT_NO_TRANSLATION -o libarts_xine.la -rpath /usr/lib64 -L/usr/lib64/qt-3.3/lib -L/usr/lib64 -Wl,--as-needed -Wl,--enable-new-dtags -module -no-undefined -Wl,--no-undefined -Wl,--allow-shlib-undefined -pthread xinePlayObject.lo xinePlayObject_impl.lo audio_fifo_out.lo -L/usr/lib64 -lxine -lX11 -lXext -lkmedia2_idl -lsoundserver_idl -lartsflow
As I see the -pthread option is specified in this command(and the pthread library is installed on my system for sure), so it's most probably not a linking problem. May it be a missing header file in the source file /usr/src/redhat/BUILD/kdemultimedia-3.5.6-patched/xine_artsplugin/xinePlayObject_impl.cpp? Does anyone have an idea how to overcome this error?

[OT] Connecting two hard drives on same IDE cable
by Dotan Cohen
Most of the computers I've ever built had two hard drives. I always
install the master on the cable connector closest to the motherboard,
and the slave on the far end. I don't recall having problems with this
setup, which I learned because I have had motherboards that would not
recognize a master if it was on the end. Now, I have read from a
respected data-recovery source that the slave should in fact be on the
connector closest to the motherboard and the master on the end. Is
this accurate? What do the experienced people who frequent this list
know?
Thanks in advance.

System lockup problem when adding more memory - FC5
by Cokey de Percin
I have an older dual processor server that has been happily running FC5
since it was released. It currently has 4G of memory and has the
capacity for 8G using 1G sticks. Recently I was given 2 1G sticks and
tried to upgrade the system. The system recognizes the memory and
boots, but then locks up with:
exec of initj(/sbin/init) failed: Exec format error.
Removing the memory clears the problem. I have also tried some 512
sticks and they also cause the same problem. Essentially anything over
4G regardless of the how that's arrived at will cause the lockup.
Looking for any hints/ideas.
Tnx
Cokey

failed to set xfermode ...
by Jamie Bohr
I was give a system with a D875PBZ Intel MB in it, it is a 2.8G system.
I am trying to get Fedora on it but either get a kernel panic or
failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x40). I have googled and found a
few ides, none have helped.
I've:
- updated the BIOS
- set irqpoll
- tried disabling the Intel SATA raid controller
- ....
If I take my IDE drive out of the old system and only run IDE on the
new system it boots and seems to work great. If I try to reinstall -
as a test to see if there is a problem with just SATA - I get the
same error - failed to set ....
My head hurts from all the banging and trying different options, this
list is my last hope before I talk my self into purchasing a PCI SATA
RAID controller.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

lsdvd?
by Tom Horsley
I'm considerably confused. Anyone know what is going on with lsdvd
and the livna versus fedora repos?
I see an lsdvd update from the fedora updates that conflicts
with the existing lsdvd on my system, and I'm also horribly
confused by whats on my system now because lsdvd apparently comes
from two different rpms :-).
[root@zooty ~]# rpm -q -f /usr/bin/lsdvd
streamdvd-streamanalyze-0.4-6.lvn5
lsdvd-0.16-4.lvn6
A few other packages seem to depend on the streamdvd stuff,
but nothing seems to depend on the existing lsdvd.
I'm ignoring the update for now, maybe it will sort itself
out in a few days :-).
