gdm Question
by Robert McBroom
I have an F8 system that lists "hsqldb" as one of the users on the login
screen. The system is not connected to the internet and I am the only one
with access. The hsqldb rpm is installed. I see it as an entry in
system-config-users but can't figure out why.

Selinux labelling problem
by Alberto Ferrante
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA256
Hi all,
during the last days I have been experiencing some strange problems on a
pre-production server (planned to become a production one this week...).
I am running xen with two virtual hosts. The problem is in the real host
where something with selinux seems to have gone bad. I started having
selinux blocking different file accesses from different services. I
tried a full relabeling (the problems started after the last targeted
policy update made by yum) but it did not work. It seems like restorecon
always assigns the unconfined_u:object_r:unconfined_home_t label to all
the files. I am using the targeted policy. Please give advices on how to
solve this problem.
I thank you in advance,
Alberto Ferrante

pulseaudio in F8 does not run
by Joachim Backes
Hi,
with the most recent F8 updates, pulseaudio is not running. I had to switch it off (by moving
/etc/alsa/pulse-default.conf into /etc/alsa/pulse-default.conf.bak).
Running with pulseaudio produces error msgs like:
E: socket-client.c: socket(): Address family not supported by protocol
Somebody made similar experiences?
All comments are welcome.
Regards
Joachim Backes

F8-xen: Problem with PCI-Passthrough {Scanned}
by Christian Exner
Hi everybody,
i'am not able to configure a working pci passthrough under f8.
Here some Parameters:
- Using virsh to manage my guests
- Xen host is running 2.6.21.7-2.fc8xen (SMP) from 15. Feb. 2008 12:39:36
- Virsh version: libvir 0.4.0/ API xen 3.0.1/ Hypervisor 3.1.0
- Guest is setup with virt-install
XML-Configuration of guest locks like this:

After "virsh define" the "<pci bus'00:04.0' />" is not visible in an
"virsh dumpxml".
"lspci" in the running guest shows no pci devices.
To hide my pci devices from Dom0 i've modified my /etc/rc.d/rc.local as
described
in some articles found on the web:

Fedora Core 8 x86 64 AMD Opteron Dual Core 180
by Dale Galekovic
All,
My system is a Opteron Dual Core 180 Socket 939 + Jetway MOBO + 1GB Memory + ATI Radeon X1650. Windows XP Pro runs great overclocked but I need to set the clock speed default to actually get Fedora Core 8 x86-64 to install and then hangs once booted... Anyone seen these problems or is this a already discussed issue ??? Can Fedora Core 8 be overclocked ???? I really it's suppose to run at 2.4GHz and I have it running at 2.7GHz but at even 2.4GHz it boots but will hang. And as I said XP runs great at 2.7GHz.
Thanks in advance

cups 1.3.6-2 printer no longer prints
by Frank Cox
After running "yum update" last night and getting, among other things, an
update to the above version of cups, one of my printers no longer works.
I have a Samsung ML-1210 connected via the parallel port to a machine running
F8/x86_64. After the update, I can no longer get anything to print.
Going through system-config-printer and hitting "print test page" brings up a
window that say s"Submitted Test page submitted as job 79" (the number
increments every time) but nothing prints and the busy light on the printer
never starts flashing so it apparently receives no data. The button changes
from "print test page" to "Cancel tests" when I close the "submitted" window, so
I click that, and that's all there is to that. The "Printer state" line on the
screen never changes from "idle".
Going through http://localhost:631 and printing a test page from there says
that the test page was sent, but when I check the list of jobs there are "no
jobs" and the printer never does anything at all there either.
I have removed and reinstalled the ML-1210 printer several times through
system-config-printer but nothing changes. I have switched the printer off and
back on, and even rebooted the whole computer a couple of times.
Here is what I get in /var/log/cups/error.log when I click the "print test
page" button in system-config-printer:

[F8 i386] Drive mount locations change at startup.
by Scott Beamer
I've got 4 internal and two external hard drives.
Every time I boot and log in I find at least one of my internal drives
mounts in a different directory than it had previously (the others may
as well, but I've not yet noticed - read on).
It's never the same directory (it's either "/media/disk"
"/media/disk-1", or "/media/disk-2" or "/media/disk-3").
I've got a symlink from a directory in ~/ to a subdirectory on one of my
internal drives and it breaks with every boot.
Is this a bug or a feature? ;)
How might I get my drives to mount in the same place every time?
Thanks.

Automount external hard drive?
by Reid Rivenburgh
Hi. I'm still tweaking my setup with my external USB hard drive.
It's generally working, but it still has this annoying habit of
getting lost, with messages like these:
Mar 3 10:33:33 pigpen kernel: usb 3-1: USB disconnect, address 4
It "only" happens every few days on average now. When it does happen,
though, I manually umount, e2fsck, and mount it. I did create an
fstab entry so can refer to it as "/mnt/disk2", but it's still a bit
tedious, and the filesystem is unavailable until I notice that it's
missing. So I'm wondering if there's a good way to automate this. I
know about autofs, which should work, but that implies a lot of
mounting and unmounting (depending on timeouts and access frequency),
when logically this is a permanently attached drive. The ideal thing
is if there was a way to perform my umount/e2fsck/remount whenever it
gets lost. Shortly after getting lost, the kernel finds it again, so
it seems analogous to unplugging and replugging the USB cable. Is
there a proper fedora way of handling this? I run KDE, not GNOME, but
it seems like any solution should be independent of desktop
environment; i.e. at a lower level and not dependent on a user being
logged in. If autofs is the best way to go, that's fine.
(For the record, it was disconnecting much more frequently when I had
my wireless router right next to it. I moved the router a few feet
which seems to have helped some. It may be completely unrelated, who
knows....)
Thanks,
Reid
