Hello.
Sorry for late response. When I made my post I didn't even dream that
Cox himself would pick it up. I feel bit stupid now since after I
enabled NetworkManager in Services and booted init 3 it magically
worked. And after doing init 5 it was still working. Now that I have
played a bit it works mostly. Since after doing something like ~30 boots
today it only hung once with 2.6.24.5 kernel.
After I updated to 2.6.24.5 today and tested it in
system-config-services by just running NetworkManager, not really
enabling it to boot, it hung my system and that was when I decided to
write about it. After reading your mail I did the things you asked. I
also used this day to make couple youtube videos so that you can see
what happens here.
Here is boot with kernel 2.6.24.4 which makes NetworkManager to hang the
whole system for 99% sure. Most of the time it hungs like in video,
sometimes it manages to reach gdm screen and hungs in there. And I want
to highlight that it only happened once today with 2.6.24.5 kernel.

rt2500_pci is not the cause for neither since I loaded it and it works.
Unfortunately I don't have wireless network now by hand so I cannot test
the connectivity. But otherwise device works like it should be working.
I see it in system-config-network as wlan0 and lsmod lists it's
components...

I think that this has been problem in Fedora ever since the introduction
of Udev. But in Fedora Core 8 it's been a lot more frequent and
annoying. I made youtube video of this one too. It happened for about 6
times out of ~30 boots. There ain't anything common between those six
boots or at least I am not aware if something is connecting them. We
need to think more of it.

Modprobe complains during Udev about these things occasionally:
FATAL: Error inserting dvb_bt8xx
FATAL: Error inserting snd-via82xx
bt8xx is the driver of my digitv pci card and it doesn't work at all
with 2.6.24.5. I wonder why does snd-via82xx work since I have disabled
that built-in device from BIOS and even Windows doesn't recognize it? My
primary soundcard is ESI Juli@ which is ice-1724 based device.
And one note, udev might take 2 minutes or 5 minutes or more, in video
it took 3-4 minutes to popup that warning. If I'd have let it be like
that it would have eventually start system anyway. But it's a lot faster
to just reset system and hope it works on next boot.
Sorry about picture quality. My camera is really old. I should have got
new one long time ago.

Sound input problems on Shuttle SN68PTG5

I'm running Fedora 8 on a Shuttle SN68PTG5 - and I've been very happy
with it so far.
The On-board sound is specified as: 7.1 channel High Definition Audio,
Realtek ALC888DD codec by the manufacturer. Soundcard detection shows:
Vendor: nVidia Corporation
Model: MCP67 High Definition Audio
Module: snd-hda-intel
From what I can tell this implies that there is a Media and
Communications Processor (MCP) from nVidia, and that is consistent with
the manufacturer's details: Chipset: NVIDIA GeForce 7050PV and nForce
630a (Codename: MCP 68PVNT). I presume that the Realtek chips are
somehow used for sound under the control of this processor. Why one
says MCP67 and one MCP68 I don't understand.
The Soundcard detection only shows options for PCM device related to
ALC883. (Analog and Digital.) Sound output has been working fine with
ALC883 Analog.
My problem is when I try to use the sound input - either front mic or
line-in sockets. If I start Audacity I see -30dB noise on the left
channel only, even with no input source connected. If I feed in a
signal I see it on the left channel, in addition to the noise, and still
get nothing at all on the right channel.
Thinking this was a connection or board problem I visited the supplier's
offices today. They installed a copy of Vista on it temporarily and it
worked perfectly. This led me to believe that the problem must be with
the drivers. I was up-to-date with the alsa drivers, lib and utilities
from the fedora repos at 1.0.15. On the Realtek site I found a linux
driver set dated February 20th. I backed up
/lib/modules/.../kernel/sound and a few other bits and pieces and
installed it. It compiled new versions of alsa-lib and utils but they
are still 1.0.15. The drivers however are 1.0.16 and soundcard
detection shows that it is picking those up. Unfortunately no improvement.
Any suggestions on how to progress further please. Yes I know I could
get a separate sound card, but I'd like to get this one working if I
can, especially as it works well for output.

Had to hack new-kernel script in mkinitrd to boot from USB after updating kernel

Dear Everybody:
I have a small fleet of external USB hard disks with Fedora and I have
the graduate students boot their windows machines from these external
drives in order to do some actual work (as opposed to playing
Minesweeper). It is no trouble to install these systems on external
USB since the improvements in F7 for that purpose, but when the kernel
is updated, the mkinitrd stuff does not end up getting all of the
right modules loaded. I have to insert the additional options
"--preload=ehci-hcd --preload=usb-storage --preload=sd_mod " In order
to make this work. See the patch below. After installing this
special new version of the program "new-kernel-pkg", then kernel
updates go smoothly.
Questions:
1. am I the only one in the world running Fedora from an external
drive these days? If not, why aren't the other guys commenting on
this?
2. I wish the new-kernel-pkg script would accept command line options
for additional required modules, and somehow the system would know the
modules it needs. I have a feeling that such a procedure is already
in place, but somehow it was broken when I built these USB drives.

I'm running fc7 with with an Adaptec aic-7892A U160/m interface card and
recently switched to a backup system running at U320 and would like to get
the extra through put. Could anyone recommend a pci-x / 133MHz card to do this
that works reliably with fc7, soon to be fc8, then fc9. My pocket is about $200

Fedora 9 Beta, DAC960 and sym53c8xx SCSI controllers

Hi,
I tried installing Fedora 9 Beta on two old servers which had FC5 on them with DAC960(PRL) and sym53c8xx SCSI controllers. F9Beta is not seeing the SCSI controllers and does not seem to be loading them at instillation time like FC5 does.
Whats the situation with these older SCSI controllers and Fedora 9 ?

BMPx and mp3 plugin for it

After installing this, I notice that the mp3 plug-in does not have the green
splash next to it and when I attempt to play a net radio station it faults.
Anyone know what package has this plug-in for it? Searching with yum
for any package named *bmp* does not yield a plug-in rpm of any sort?
