samba installed from scratch on fc9 doesn't work for me
by Massimo Maiurana
hi all, I've just joined this list :)
I'm facing a problem with a brand new installation on fedora 9.
I did a system update right after the installation, so the samba
packages are of the latest available version (3.2.0-17.fc9).
at the first run, all the tree of tdb files were created under
/var/lib/samba.
now I try to create a new user:
[root@barbara Scrivania]# smbpasswd -a barbara
New SMB password:
Retype new SMB password:
Added user barbara.
looks like the user was created, but in the log I can see a bunch of
lines like this:
lib/account_pol.c: account_policy_get(324) account_policy_get:
tdb_fetch_uint32 failed for field $n....
...where $n is a number between 1 and 10, so basically I get ten of
those lines.
every attempt to change user's password ends with this:
[barbara@barbara ~]$ smbpasswd
Old SMB password:
New SMB password:
Retype new SMB password:
cli_pipe_validate_current_pdu: RPC fault code
DCERPC_FAULT_OP_RNG_ERROR received from remote machine 127.0.0.1
pipe \samr fnum 0x7672!
machine 127.0.0.1 rejected the password change: Error was : NT code
0x1c010002.
Failed to change password for barbara
also, if I try to connect to the server locally from the same
machine this is what I get:
[barbara@barbara ~]$ smbclient \\\\barbara\\Ufficio -U barbara
Enter barbara's password:
Domain=[BARBARA] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.2.0-17.fc9]
tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME
it would look like the requested share is non-existent, but
unfortunately it isn't so:
[barbara@barbara ~]$ smbclient -L barbara
Enter barbara's password:
Domain=[BARBARA] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.2.0-17.fc9]
Sharename Type Comment
--------- ---- -------
Ufficio Disk Ufficio
IPC$ IPC IPC Service (Samba Server Version

Domain=[BARBARA] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.2.0-17.fc9]

and indeed the shared directory exists:
[barbara@barbara ~]$ ls -l /home/barbara/Documenti
totale 4
drwxr-xr-x 28 barbara barbara 4096 1 ago 10:19 Ufficio
in the same lan there is also a win98 client, and neither it is able
to access to the public share. using "map to guest = Bad User" I'm
able at least to access the printer but not the share.
here is my smb.conf stripped from commented and empty lines:
[global]
workgroup = grecoelevatori
server string = Samba Server Version %v
lanman auth = yes
client lanman auth = yes
ntlm auth = no
client ntlmv2 auth = no
map to guest = Bad User

max log size = 50

passdb backend = tdbsam
load printers = yes
cups options = raw
[printers]
comment = All Printers
path = /var/spool/samba
browseable = no
guest ok = yes
writable = no
printable = yes
[Ufficio]
comment = Ufficio
path = /home/barbara/Documenti/Ufficio
public = yes
writable = yes
printable = no
browseable = yes
and here is what I see in the log when trying to access the public
share, either from localhost and from the win98 client:
[2008/08/20 15:56:44, 0] smbd/service.c:make_connection_snum(1152)
'/home/barbara/Documenti/Ufficio' does not exist or permission
denied when connecting to [Ufficio] Error was Permission denied
bug in the fedora package? in this version of samba? in me :)?
again, this does happens on an installation from scratch, do not
really know if all is fine when there are a previous installation
and an existing /var/lib/samba.
thanks in advance, and sorry for my english.

Fedora 9 update causes NetworkManager not to work wireless
by Luis Orlindo Tedeschi
I am having problems with NetworkManager and wireless network. When I
installed Fedora 9 NetworkManager was working fine and able to connect
to wireless networks. However, after I did the first update suggested by
the OS, NetworkManager stopped being able to recognize wireless
networks. I formatted and installed Fedora 9 twice to confirm the
problem. I could not however identify which update is causing this
problem. Anybody having the same problem? Thanks.

Mysteries of pulseaudio
by Timothy Murphy
Sound is working fine for me
on my Fedora-9 Thinkpad T43,
but when I boot I get the message
that pulseaudio is not working,
and sound is reverting to (I think) ac97.
I see in /var/log/messages the messages
Aug 23 10:22:46 carrie pulseaudio[2317]:
pid.c: Daemon already running.
Aug 23 10:22:46 carrie pulseaudio[2317]:
main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed.
However, pulseaudio daemon does not appear to be running now.
This seems to be a purely academic question,
but I'd be interested to know
(a) why pulseaudio is not running, and
(b) whether this matters?

encrypted swap question
by mike cloaked
I have a machine with f9 clean installed and encrypted /, encrypted swap
and encrypted /opt partitions.
Of course during boot you are asked for the luks passphrase for all three
partitions.
I have been able to avoid the passphrase prompt for /opt, by placing a keyfile
in /root and added this key to luks for /opt and referred from /etc/crypttab
so that /opt gets mounted during boot without the need to have user input.
That works fine.
I would like to to the same with the swap partition - but if I make a
second keyfile in /root and refer to it on the swap partition line in
/etc/crypttab in the same way as for /opt then it ignores this during boot and
asks the user for the luks passphrase for the swap partition after asking for
the passphrase for the root partition.
The /etc/crypttab line has
luks-sda6 /dev/sda6 /root/keyfileswap
where /root/keyfileswap has been added as another key to the swap partition
using cryptsetup lukesAddKey
I note from the man entry for crypttab that for swap partitions /dev/urandom
should be allowable also but changing the cryptab line to
luks-sda6 /dev/sda6 /dev/urandom
still gives a prompt to enter the luks passphrase for this swap partition
immediately after the analogous prompt for the / partition which opens fine.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

microphone not recording
by Marcelo Garcia
Hi.
I have been trying to get my mic work with Skype and Fedora 9. Skype
only works when the device in "Sound In" is set to "ICH6,0", not the
"Default Device (default)". The test call works, but I cannot hear my voice.
The default (System-> preferences-> Hardware-> sound-> Sound Capture) is
set to ALSA. The default mixer is "Intel ICH6 (Alsa mixer)".
I tried to use the "Sound Recorder" tool to see if the mic was working,
but when I try to use, the file is saved, but again no sound.
I think the problem could be in permission to the device. Which one?
/dev/dsp?
Thanks

OFF-TOPIC: Fedora 7 already installed, can't install XP on empty partition
by Andre Costa
Hi,
this is somehow off-topic, but hopefully someone here has been through
this already...
I just bought a shiny new Core 2 Duo machine (Intel DG33BU mobo), with
a nice 250G SATA disk. Fedora 7 installation went surprisingly well
(and fast), only problem was that onboard NIC was not recognized, but
upgrading the kernel offline fixed this. Everything is amazingly fast
=)
BUT... I need this machine to dual-boot to Windows XP (still addicted
to some Windows-only games =( ). XP setup CD hangs just after showing
"examining hardware configuration" or something like that. It doesn't
really hangs, it just switches to a blank screen and sits there
forever (I already left it there for more than 15min to no avail).
Keyboard is responsive and HD led stays on. CTRL+ALT+DEL reboots as
expected.
I talked to IT guys at work and they told me they've been through this
already lots of times, it seems XP is unable to properly recognize the
disk when only Linux is installed on it (?!?), and only solution would
be to reformat the whole thing and install XP first.
Is that true?
My system is configured as:
~ fdisk -l /dev/sda
Disk /dev/sda: 250.0 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 13 104391 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 14 10467 83971755 8e Linux LVM
HD specs are:
~ hdparm -I /dev/sda
/dev/sda:
ATA device, with non-removable media
Model Number: SAMSUNG SP2504C
Serial Number: S09QJ1SP208120
Firmware Revision: VT100-50
GRUB is installed on MBR. All remaining space is sitting there,
waiting for XP to take over... =/
Anyone knows of a workaround? Should I try to create an additional
partition on the empty space and format it as VFAT hoping this would
make Windoze less stupid? Or am I doomed to remove all partitions and
start from scratch, starting with XP?
TIA

by Mustafa Qasim
Hello!
I've just installed F9 in my Vmware workstation 6 but I couldn't
change my defualt 800x600 resolution to 1024x768. Is VMware causing this
problem? Any Idea.

No audio when recording using Audacity in Fedora 9
by Jonathan Ryshpan
I'm using audacity with jack under F9 to record audio coming in through
my computer's line input. Everything seems to work OK, except that no
signal appears in the input VU meter or in the displayed waveform. The
recording is silent. A little web searching turned up this snippet:
Audacity doesn't support PulseAudio, nor Esound for the moment.
You'll have to kill or suspend pulseaudio before you use this
application. Audacity uses the PortAudio cross-platform Audio
API which doesnt support pulseaudio. Some work was started on
making portaudio support PulseAudio but this does not appear to
be under active development currently and does not work in it's
current state.
In F8 under KDE, I was able to stop the aRts sound server, and record
successfully. F9 with Gnome appears to use both PulseAudio and EsounD.
It's easy to stop PulseAudio, using something like:
pasuspender -- audacity <argument>
but there doesn't seem to be any way to stop EsounD.
Has anyone used audacity successfully with jack? Or any other way?

F9: Canon LBP2900 no go: "usblp1: error -32 reading printer status"
by Colin Brace
Hi all,
I am trying to get a Canon LBP2900 laser printer working under F9.
Alas, the driver is (apparently) closed and not included in the Caps
package, which might be a reason to avoid this printer, but be that as
it may, one can download a Linux driver easily enough from Canon:
http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0010177.asp
These are the latest RPMs:
2007-12-03 08:49 cndrvcups-capt-1.60-1.i386.rpm
2007-12-03 08:49 cndrvcups-common-1.60-1.i386.rpm
Once installed, CAPS automatically recognizes the printer and selects
what appears to be the correct driver:
Canon LBP2900 CAPT ver.1.5
Likewise, the printer shows up properly in dmesg:
usb 1-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 26
usb 1-4: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
usblp1: USB Bidirectional printer dev 26 if 0 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x04A9
pid 0x2676
usb 1-4: New USB device found, idVendor=04a9, idProduct=2676
usb 1-4: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
usb 1-4: Product: Canon CAPT USB Device
usb 1-4: Manufacturer: Canon
usb 1-4: SerialNumber: 0000A380HGkZ
but if I try a test page, nothing happens. The only indication that
something is wrong is this error message repeatedly displayed in dmesg:
usblp1: error -32 reading printer status
Any ideas what is going on here?
Thanks.
