I am not at all sure I did B. procedure correctly,
so my not getting past grub could have been due to my error?
And I do get to level 3 login using my modified f10 grub.conf
I will try at least f10 reinstall with "linux install scsi_mod.scan=sync"
--won't get to it until > noon pst.
Question on your sda1 for /boot, sda4 for / :
My experience using disk druid in the install is weak.
I have used gparted from a systemrescuecd
and this seems pretty easy to use.
So from gparted i would
1)format current sda1 first? or not necessary?
2)Shrink sda1 from its current 21gb down to 200mb.
3)new partition sda4, to start at end of new sda1
and to end at old sda1end
this process will leave present size, location of sda2,sda3 untouched?
so in order on disk, sda1,sda4,sda2,sda3 ?

Setup Firefox so mailto links use Kmail
by Kevin Kempter
Hi all;
I did the following to setup firefox mailto links to use kmail but it did not
work. Thoughts ?
1) I went to about:config in firefox and ensured that the value
"network.protocol-handler.external.mailto" is set to true
2) I did a right click and choose new --> string
in the popup for the preference name I entered the following:
network.protocol-handler.app.mailto
Then in the next popup asking for the string value I entered this:
kmail
However when I click on a mailto link firefox still wants to bring up
evolution. I even tried using /usr/bin/kmail as the string value.
Thanks in advance...

FC4: Kernel Panic - Not Syncing
by Kumar Limbu
Hi,
I have a server which is running Fedora Core 4. I have updated the kernel to
version 2.6.17 because I was getting kernel panic on version 2.6.11. I used
yum for update. After the update the server worked fine for months before
the problem again started to surface. Now I get a similar Kernel Panic error
every few weeks.
Kernel panic - not syncing: bad locking
I thought that this might be an issue with the kernel so I tried updating it
again. Only this time yum doesn't show any new version as available.
So what are my options? How do I update the kernel on my server without
upgrading the OS itself? I would prefer an RPM update as opposed to a TAR
balls update.
Please feel free to ask further questions regarding the error message. I
will be more than willing to answer your queries.
Thanks for your help.

to boot to runlevel 3

B. I got partway thru this, i think including adding "3", then I did

left with

I wasnt clear at this point put in "boot"
got many error msgs
I finally went back to my fc5 and put a space and a "3" at end of kernel line
in the f10 grub.conf.
This got me to login
I will try
yum update mkinitrd
yum update
later today; I need my fc5 right now.

Any recommendation for Groupware Software?
by Khemara Lyn
Hi All,
I'm in the middle of choosing a Groupware software. I've been looking at 2 of
them now: OpenGroupware(oGo) and eGroupware.
May I ask for some ideas from those with experience with the 2 systems? Any
recommendation would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks & regards,

I downloaded the kernel rpm, then put it onto a usb stick.
No modules == no USB,
So I burned onto a cd/rw.
No modules == no CD.
I booted system_rescue_CD, mounted the F10 filesystem and the CD.
Copied over the rpm, and booted the older kernel.
Then used yum to remove the new kernel and then re-install it.
I am sure there is a better way, but this worked.
The problem was that you don't find out about the missing modules until you reboot.
So something gets set/reset, then during the next boot modules are not loaded, although the files are there.

That's interesting - I didn't actually see how you are sending HTML.
My Gmail is set to "default text encoding" (not UTF-8) and I seem to
be sending messages in text:
Subject: Re: what is "Document Viewer"?
From: "Sharpe, Sam J" <sam.sharpe+lists.redhat(a)gmail.com>
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Your messages are sending in both HTML and text, so technically the
receiver can decide which one to view based on their capabilities or
preferences (but you're still wasting other people's bandwidth - which
is typically what they are objecting to). I had no idea how you set
Gmail to do that, but having had a look around, I found this post:
http://personalweb.about.com/b/2005/04/04/gmail-lets-you-send-html-email.htm
I've never noticed the "Rich formatting" link that appears above my
compose box before, but I think that's what you are using - try
hitting the "Plain text" link you should have and see if that sticks
as a preference (as I can't see anywhere to force it).

how could you see that I was sending in both HTML and text?
I dont see a Content-Type line on my gmail sends
is there some configure step i am missing?
I have left utf selected
but also did switch out of the rtf into text
Is this email being received as only text?

Installing a module
by Bill Case
Hi;
I have had difficulty getting tvtime to work. There is no sound and the
channel changer wouldn't work.
I have solved the channel changing problem by modprobe tuner -- but I
can't get it to stick i.e. I need to put a line into modprobe.d. How do
I do this?
I have checked man modprobe.d -- "install modulename command..."
Will "install tuner" do or do I need a specific command? If so what
would it be? I have no dependencies etc.
As well, there is file /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf.dist. I assume
this is where I add the line -- but no mention of modprobe.conf.dist is
made in man.
Just some suggestions would be helpful regarding sound.
I am using alsa
My tvtime.xml is set to :line
I have no actual external line-in from my Hauppauge WinTV HVR 1800 PCIe
tv tuner card to my sound.
My Volume Gui is set to HDA Intel (Alsa Mixer)
with volume sliders for Master (60%), PCM (100%), Front (100%), Line-in
(100%), CD (0 %), PC Speaker (100%)
I have been told that tvtime automatically finds my sound mixer driver
and after that all sound problems are with alsa !?
What other sound configurations should I experiment with?

end of quote re "scsi_mod.scan=sync"
Important Note: mkinitrd-6.0.71-3.fc10 fixes the issue above!! Please
update your system after fixing manually, or better after booting
using the kernel argument "scsi_mod.scan=sync" !!!
---
Craig:
If you read Bill Nottingham's comment (# 19), the solution seems far
easier..

Comment #19 From Bill Nottingham 2008-12-19 12:09:08 EDT
Install the update mkinitrd and remake your initrd
-----
Craig:
You would have to get a boot up and into a virtual console.
Either...
A. let it boot up until the screen disappears...
press <Control><Alt><F2>
or
B. Press a key at the grub prompt and highlight the kernel with the
arrow keys and press the letter 'e', move down to the kernel line and
press the letter 'e'. Add a space and put in the number "3" to tell it
to boot to runlevel 3
After startup either way...
login as root and as root, run...
yum update mkinitrd
yum update <<< will update all installed pkgs
This would take some time to install all of the updates.
jbyers:
doing above means I dont have to run mkinitrd to make new initrd?
Because the yum update will update the initrd also?
Craig:
This still won't solve your X problems.
That would probably need you to switch to the console again as above and
again, login as root
init 3
yum install system-config-display
system-config-display --reconfig
and see if you can get a working X display
You can test it by typing 'startx'
Once you get X running, you can type 'init 5' or just reboot
----
jbyers:
I am familiar with startx, I run that way in my fc5
Are you telling me that my f10 boot is actually finishing?
and only then failing on X-server?
thanks for response
