Re: f10 install, still no X [success with xdriver=vesa vga=792]
by Jackson Byers
David, thanks for your suggestions re the xorg wiki
I had already tried Xorg -configure
to generate an xorg.conf, but that by itself not enough to boot to X
I have since found that I _can_ boot to X
_if_
I use as kernel parameters
xdriver=vesa vga=792
I had been using these for a couple of days
without success, so it is some combination of steps
that finally succeeded.
If i remove those parameters, again no booting to X
specifically,
the first stanza in grub.conf does not boot to X;
the second stanza does:
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg.
# root (hd1,7)
# kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/sda1
# initrd /initrd-version.img
#boot=/dev/sdb8
default=0
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd1,7)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
***hiddenmenu

kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686 ro root=UUID=f3e0f6cf-c687-4d8e-b
08b-3a27f2f79766 rhgb quiet scsi_mod.scan=sync
initrd /initrd-2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686.img

[I am now using a separate /boot partition sdb8,
with f10 / still on sda1
but I dont think that is the issue]
more than a month ago when I was still trying to use livecd (not install)
i found then that i needed those parameters for the livecd to boot to X
but i had forgotten all about it, until I tried a few days ago
on the f10dvd install, but then it had no effect.
Somehow using those kernel parameters
coupled with my various attempts "init 5"
to get an apparently error free Xorg.0.log
and perhaps the final
startx -- :1
did the magic trick.
I cant reconstruct exact set of steps I took to get here:
About 1 week ago, may24?
I did Xorg -config to generate xorg.conf.new
and copied it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and redid system-ccnfig-display -v
then "init 5"
but those steps by itself still not booting to X
I redid the install on may 26,
again copied the xorg.conf
and again
system-ccnfig-display -v; init 5
still no X
tried
startx -- :1
but it gave DRM errors in Xorg.1.log:
[root@localhost log]# ls -l X*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 40137 2009-05-28 07:17 Xorg.0.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 40677 2009-05-28 07:16 Xorg.0.log.old
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 38695 2009-05-27 03:55 Xorg.1.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 835 2009-05-26 12:26 Xorg.setup.log
[root@localhost log]# grep EE Xorg.1.log
(EE) MGA(0): [drm] Could not boot-strap DMA (-16)
(EE) MGA(0): failed to destroy server context
[root@localhost log]#
same msg in Xorg.setup.log
evidently those EE
not preventing X
or those EE no longer in effect.
Summary: for my system with the f10dvd
i need
xdriver=vesa vga=792
Can anyone tell me why these necessary
and/or where documented?

networking question
by Gerhard Magnus
One thing I've always liked about computers is that it's possible for
one to do so much more than one understands; a little knowledge turns
out to have a great deal of leverage. But now I'd like to backtrack a
bit and learn something about the LAN I've already cobbled together.
My interface with the Internet is an Actiontec DSL modem (which I then
have connected to a router.) When I use a browser to look at the modem's
"status" window I see it's connected to a WAN (wide-area network?) which
I assume is administered by my ISP. The WAN information includes an "IP
address" and a "Gateway" which differ only in their last two sections
(i.e. IP address xxx.xxx.181.193 and Gateway xxx.xxx.180.1) Why are
these two addresses needed? (I'm thinking my LAN would only need one IP
address.)
Thanks for the help on what's probably a very elementary question....

No sound from Flash (YouTube)
by Ian Pilcher
I'm not sure when this broke; it was working at some point.
Other sounds work, but Flash gives me nothing but silence.
This is 64-bit Fedora 10 with flash-plugin-10.0.22.87-release.i386.
Suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

Re: preupgrade F10 --> Rawhide [SOLVED]
by "Germán A. Racca"
Well, I have checked the grub.conf and I realized that the line
"default=1" was wrong, and
I put "default=0" and now booted correctly.
Thanks Konstantino, I think in that link must be a similar solution.
Thanks again,
German.

Say what? ::jaw drops to floor and slams back up::
That is, without a doubt, one of the most 'mis-guided' things I ever
heard on here. If that were even a slightly legitimate argument, then
you could not use ANY software at all.
My brain hurts so badly right now...

preupgrade F10 --> Rawhide
by "Germán A. Racca"
Hello everybody:
I have recently run "preupgrade" in my Fedora 10, and I choosed
to upgrade to Rawhide. The "preupgrade" program made all the
necessary tasks (downloaded fc11 packages, etc.) and when finished
it asked to reboot. I rebooted and I got a black screen saying
"GRUB _" (the _ is blinking) and it reminds in the same way since
30 minutes ago.
My question: is it working or I get an error? May I reboot again?
Please...can anyone help me?
Thanks in advance,
German.

What software is missing in the Fedora repository?
by Rahul Sundaram
Hi,
I am doing a quick survey for software that you use on a regular basis
that is not available via the Fedora repository. Software that you
suggest should be free and open source, free of patent and other legal
issues.
Tell me the home page of the software and give me a brief description on
what it does. Bonus points if you can see in Google for "software-name
fedora package review" to figure it if it is already in the Fedora
package review queue. If you know of RPM packages in other distributions
for the software your are suggesting, that information is useful as well.

Kernel update nuked my machine
by Smith, Herb
Tuesday evening the automatic updater downloaded a kernel update. After
rebooting all I get is a totally black screen with "GRUB_" in the upper
left corner of the screen. It responds to nothing on the keyboard.
This is a dual boot Dell machine with FC10 and Windows XP.
Any suggestions? Is there something I can do with the rescue CD or is
it best to wait for FC11 and try to just do an update from there?
Thanks in advance.
