Methods of setting Disk Partitions.
by Michael D. Setzer II
Is there a better way to setup the disk partitioning?
Usually, I've let the installation just create the partitions, and it has created
the small boot partition and then the LVM with the rest of the space. With
smaller disk this is OK, but with large disks the LVM partition is huge, so
doing image backups takes like 1 hour 30 minutes for a 250GB disk. I've
tried to adjust the size, but the best method I've come up with so far is this.
Just installed a new X64 system with a 500GB disk, and ended up during the
install switching to screen 2, and using fdisk to create a 200MB /dev/sda1
and 40GB /dev/sda2 and then created a FAT32 partition /dev/sda3 with the
rest of the space. Then wrote the setup to disk. Then used fdisk to delete the
first two partitions. Then continued with the install, and told it to use free
space, and it installed just using space at the beginning. After finishing, I was
able to reformat the /dev/sda3 to ext4 as a test.
This way I can quickly do an image of the boot and the LVM parition to be
able to restore the machine if needed.
Thanks.

info shows a empty (dir)Top on Fedora 11
by 平天韩
hi Great list,
Do you notice that on Fedora 11, just type 'info' in the command line and
run it, it will
just show a empty window. What're the problems? I think it should be able
to list a index
of all manuals in my machine.
thanks.

OFF-TOPIC: Algol 60 guru required
by Hiisi
Dear All!
Sorry for this off-topic, but I could not see any solution to my
problem. I'm trying to transform old Algol 60 program to C++. I can
understand every syntax of it except this construction:
D(N+1):=N(N+2):=0.0;
Variables types:
N - INTEGER
D - REAL ARRAY
What is it? How to represent in C++? Hope on this list there's people,
who could remember that from the time...
Thanks in advance!

Quotas issue - rpcbind: breaks nfs
by Aldo Foot
Although I already have the fix to this question, I'm doing a bit of
detective work to find out why rpcbind breaks nfs when quotas are involved.
Preliminary notes:
1. as of this posting my system if fully updated (and rebooted)
2. I have not made any changes to /etc/sysconfig/nfs
3. I'm running kernel 2.6.29.6-213.fc11.i686.PAE
4. This is not a Virtual Machine.
I had this in /etc/fstab. A VG with quotas enabled.
"/dev/myVG/lv1 /mnt/p2 ext3 defaults,usrquota,grpquota 1 2"
I removed the VG entirely, but did not disabled quotas in it before
removal. I don't know why this would be the source of the problem.
The rpcbind service is OK.
# service rpcbind status
rpcbind (pid 2977) is running...
# rpcinfo -p
program vers proto port service
100000 4 tcp 111 portmapper
100000 3 tcp 111 portmapper
100000 2 tcp 111 portmapper
100000 4 udp 111 portmapper
100000 3 udp 111 portmapper
100000 2 udp 111 portmapper
When I try to start the NFS services I get a quotas related error message.
# /etc/init.d/nfs start
Starting NFS services: [ OK ]
Starting NFS quotas: Cannot register service: RPC: Authentication
error; why = Client credential too weak
rpc.rquotad: unable to register (RQUOTAPROG, RQUOTAVERS, udp). [FAILED]
Starting NFS daemon: [FAILED]
I attempt to turn quotas off in the system (none found).
# quotaoff - -all - -off - -verbose
Interestingly, when I "restart" as opposed to "start" the NFS services, there's
an "OK" message in there, but NFS does not start.
# /etc/init.d/nfs restart
Shutting down NFS mountd: [FAILED]
Shutting down NFS daemon: [FAILED]
Shutting down NFS quotas: [FAILED]
Shutting down NFS services: [FAILED]
Starting NFS services: [ OK ]
Starting NFS quotas: Cannot register service: RPC: Authentication
error; why = Client credential too weak
rpc.rquotad: unable to register (RQUOTAPROG, RQUOTAVERS, udp).[FAILED]
Starting NFS daemon: [FAILED]
The fix is to add this line to /etc/hosts.allow:
"rpcbind : 127.0.0.1 EXCEPT PARANOID"
I got that from a somewhat related filed bug:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=358621
The issue was fixed a while ago in F9:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=249199
See also:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=173495
So, why am I seeing this in F11?
How do I tell NFS that there are not quotas in any filesystem?
I don't want to reinstall F11 all over just to find out this answer.
If you have input, please share.
thanks,
~af

You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
You could try running: package-cleanup --problems
package-cleanup --dupes
rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance

Missing smbmount
by Ragnar Wiencke
Hi there.
I'm running a Fedora 10 system with Samba 3.2.4-0.22.fc10 and I noticed that
smbmount, smbumount and smbmnt are missing. No man files either. Are there
new utilities or is this a fault in the installation packages?
Looking forward to hear from you guys.

Is this a problem for a man like Bill Clinton who knows about the meaning of

TIA :-)

has anybody tried to update Netbeans to version 6.7 on Fedora 11?
I would like to avoid a big mess since netbeans has a lot of dependencies.
