I need to make an install iso of the OS the way it is after I've laboured for several hours to customized it...
by Linda McLeod
Is there a link to download ALL Fedora-14 updates all at once in one
huge file..?
All I've found is a link to download each update separately...
Here's my little problem.. My PC is hit nearly every week or two by
hateful bullies.. I need to make an install iso of the OS the way it is
after I've laboured for several hours to customize it to my liking.. I
need all my peripheral programs and files to be in that install..
Please link me to a site that tells how it's done.. Ten years I've been
trying to make such an install disk, and just can't get through it.. It
makes me feel so darn stupid and small that I can't do this simple
little thing... If ever I do get it one day, I'll probably be bouncing
in my chair till it or my bum breaks... Please tell how it's done...

no way to connect to new wi-fi nets
by antonio montagnani
after latest updates I suddenly realized that I cannot connetc to any new net
that is found in the nearby.
This night I went for the first time to a
friend's home,I got a list of more tha 30 nets, but I didn't succed to connect
to any of them: old nets (that were already connected in the past) are working
fine.
Is anybody else experiencing this trouble.

OT: Changing MSDOS attributes from Linux?
by Michael D. Setzer II
In the past days, we have a virus going around that readonly and
hidden attributes on files on students flashes in other labs.
They send the students to me for help, and I can kill the virus from
linux and remove the lnk files it puts on the flash, but linux sees all
the files fine, but in Windows, the files are still hidden.
I then have to open the file in Windows, and go to DOS and use
the attrib command to clear things.
attrib -r -h -s /S /D
Is there a Linux command that can change the DOS attributes on
flash devices with FAT and NTFS filesystems? mattrib does not
seem to work?
Thanks.

You may want to try:
http://www.mondorescue.org/
This has worked for me.
Also, if your install is small enough, you can use
the 'dd' command to backup/restore a disk image of
the whole partition to a flash drive. This is what I
typically do these days.
Either way is reasonably fast to restore and has has
worked well for me.

Cannot boot properly: dbus problems?
by Nick Urbanik
Dear Folks,
After a power surge and a spontaneous reboot, my 4-core F15 x86_64 machine
has been unhappy. I have forced a selinux relabel, and a forcefsck.
Symptoms:
1. The graphical boot did not complete: it started Nagios, but cupsd
failed to start, and gdm did not start up.
2. I cannot log in on the text consoles; I can type the username, but
no prompt appears for the password.
3. Attempts to use sudo just hang.
4. I can log in by ssh as either myself or as root.
5. named is using "97.5%" CPU, though when I turn on querylogging,
there are very few lookups.
6. Attempts to start cups result in complaints about dbus:
# systemctl start cups.service
Failed to get D-Bus connection: Failed to authenticate in time.
/var/log/messages says nothing of the matter.
Now systemctl is new to me, and I am not sure how to diagnose this.
I would be grateful for any suggestions. Where should I look for
further clues?

Long startup of fedora-storage-init.service
by Richard Shaw
I found the following thread but I don't think mine is the same problem:
http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/test/2011-June/100861.html
I am, however, running BTRFS on main main partitions on top of LVM
(since anaconda as of F15 still creates an LVM setup regardless of
filesystem?)
This is the only thing I can think of that's causing the problem.
$ systemd-analyze blame | head
47003ms fedora-storage-init.service
30284ms boot.mount
8829ms udev-settle.service
3692ms cups.service
1686ms systemd-vconsole-setup.service
1567ms udev.service
1510ms autofs.service
1403ms fedora-readonly.service
1311ms lvm2-monitor.service
1295ms NetworkManager.service
boot.mount I assume just remounts the boot partition as read-write, so
I think it's just waiting on fedora-storage-init.service.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Richard

unneeded dependencies on NetworkManager-gtk/glib?
by Ranjan Maitra
HI,
This morning, I have been trying out wicd/wicd-gtk in place of
NetworkManager. This works pretty well so far. So, I was trying to
erase NetworkManager-gtk and this is what I get:
===============================================================================
Package Arch Version Repository
Size
===============================================================================
Removing:
NetworkManager-glib x86_64 1:0.9.1.90-1.git20110927.fc15 @updates 675 k
NetworkManager-gtk x86_64 1:0.9.1.90-1.git20110927.fc15 @updates 164 k
Removing for dependencies:
claws-mail-plugins x86_64 3.7.9-4.fc15 @updates 6.3 k
claws-mail-plugins-fancy x86_64 3.7.9-4.fc15 @updates 105 k
geoclue x86_64 0.12.0-7.fc15 @fedora 266 k
midori x86_64 0.4.0-1.fc17 @rawhide 3.5 M
webkitgtk x86_64 1.4.2-1.fc15 @updates 29 M
Transaction Summary
===============================================================================
Remove 7 Package(s)
Installed size: 34 M
Is this ok [y/N]:
I wonder why these other dependencies would specifically depend on the
NetworkManager-glib/gtk. The network is understandable, but
specifically NetworkManager-\*? If this needs to be reported, what
should it be reported under? The specific individual components?
A couple more questions: where do I set up wicd to be automatically
started upon boot? I seem to think I knew this, but could not find it
anywhere in my notes -- sorry I can usually not find much of the little I keep :-(
Also, are there any benefits to using NetworkManager over wicd, say?
The former seems too big, with all its dependencies, but an in-house
Fedora product from what I recall.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Ranjan

Rhythmbox under KDE -- Preferences assertion
by Michael Eager
When I run Rhythmbox under KDE4 (on F15) and click on Edit>Preferences, I get an assertion failure:
GLib:ERROR:gvarianttypeinfo.c:186:g_variant_type_info_check: assertion failed: (0 <= index && index
< 24)
Does anyone know how to correct this?

dynamic symlinks/variant symlinks in fuse?
by Ian Malone
Hi,
Does anyone know of a tool which provides variant or dynamic banks of
symlinks? I'm thinking of being able to do something like the
following:
You have some directory src containing:
src/1/a
src/1/b
src/1/c
src/2/a
src/2/b
src/2/c
src/3/a
src/3/b
src/3/c
And want to be able to create (for example):
tgt-a/1 -> src/1/a
tgt-a/2 -> src/2/a
tgt-a/3 -> src/3/a
Obviously you can do this statically with just a 'for' loop, but for
some purposes it would be very handy to be able to have this
dynamically maintained via being able to set some rules for the link
targets. I'm thinking this should be possible with FUSE and perhaps
it's already been done, but a little googling hasn't turned anything
up.
(I've mentioned variant symlinks too, and these are slightly
different: a single link whose target is dependent on variable
components, but this would be handy to have too. Currently only a few
BSDs can do it.)
