Re: Unable to ssh nodes with global IP
by J.Witvliet@mindef.nl
Hi,
Could be several reasons.
I presume that you succeede in ssh-ing to that machine, from another client (i.e. The machine does accept incomoing ssh-request)
Perhaps firewall settings?
Or accept/deny configurations?

Dear List,
My internet connection is via mobile broadband. The ifconfig lists
the ppp0 with IP address,
ppp0 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
inet addr:120.165.xx.xxx P-t-P:10.64.64.64 Mask:255.255.255.255

collisions:0 txqueuelen:3
RX bytes:3867747 (3.6 MiB) TX bytes:1020544 (996.6 KiB)
I tried to remote login (using ssh) to this IP address from another
machine but failed.
The following message appears,
ssh: connect to host 120.166.xx.xxx port 22: Connection timed out
Editing /etc/sysconfig/iptables and add --dport 22 -j Accept does not help.
Could any one please provide some suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
AA

Key bindings for screen
by Suvayu Ali
Hi everyone,
I have been trying to setup some keybindings for screen but have been
rather unsuccessful so far. The documentation is very difficult to
understand / follow for me. I was wondering if someone could help me
understand how to specify key combinations with modifier keys.
I want to be able to switch terminals with either `escape key
<arrow>' or `escape key C-<arrow>'. I would also like to change
my escape key from C-a to C-q (easier to navigate in bash and
emacs). These are my attempts so far:
1. Switching terminals: I tried the following for `escape key
<arrow>', but it doesn't work.
bindkey -d ^[[D prev
bindkey -d ^[[C next
Then I tried the following for `escape key C-<arrow>'.
bindkey -d ^[[1;5D prev
bindkey -d ^[[1;5C next
This somewhat works. The problem now is, after swithing the terminals
if I press the escape key for a subsequent command it is interpreted
as the concluding part of a C-a C-a sequence and screen switches to
the original terminal. To give you an example a sequence like this,
`C-a C-<left> C-a A' is interpreted as `prev other A' instead of
`prev title'.
2. Changing the escape key: This is more of an issue with the terminal
emulator rather than screen. My terminal emulator (xfce4 terminal)
doesn't pass on the C-q to screen. Strangely when I run emacs in the
terminal (emacs -nw) or I run emacs within screen, C-q is passed
along just fine.
Any ideas?
PS: I start screen with `term' set to `xterm'

Alternative to Apple's TimeCapsule for Linux?
by Manuel Escudero
Hi There, today I was watching some videos and reading some information
about the Apple's Time Capsule, wich simply is an external HDD with some
ethernet and USB ports behind but the most important WiFi support....
In a few words it's a router with a 2TB HDD inside XD...
The prupouse of this thing is function as a mini-server
to backup you macs with a software called time machine,
share printers within the net and all that fun stuff...
Deja-Dup does what Time Machine Does, but I was wondering
what kind of device can replace the Apple's Time Capsule and
be fully compatible with Linux?
As far as I investigated, there are only 3 devices of this type:
- Apple Time Capsule - http://www.apple.com/timecapsule/
- ClickFree Wireless - http://www.clickfree.com/products_c3.php
- LaCie Wireless Space - http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?id=10520
Does anyone of you have experience using one of these devices on Linux?
or if not,
Wich device is a good alternative if I want functionallity like this?
Thanks!

Double touch mousepad to click left mouse button
by Miguel Cardenas
Hello list
I'm just installing Fedora 15 (never used this distribution) on my laptop
but found that I can't click left button by double touching the mousepad...
my doubt is, how should I configure it to do it as usual with my previous
distro that was configured that way by default?
Thanks!

nslookup fails on local host
by Amit Saha
Hello all:
My first post here, and I begin with a (possibly super) newbie query.
'nslookup' fails to resolve my local machine which I have named: 'soma'.
Here are some data:
$hostname
soma.ad.adfa.edu.au
$hostname -d
ad.adfa.edu.au
$domainname
(none)
I connect to the LAN via DHCP. Lookup on any remote website/or my own
Ubuntu box succeeds.
Where should I be looking into?
Many TIA
-Amit

Problem with intel Advanced 6230 card
by Javier Perez
Hi
If I start FC15 with the 2.6.38.6-26.rc1.fc15.i686 kernel, Everything works
fine, the internal Intel Centrino 6230 card performs flawlessly.
If I start FC15 with the 2.6.40.6-0.fc15.i686 the system crashes, it totally
freezes as soon as it turns up the wireless card (at least that is what it
seems)
what is going on?

kde desktop suddenly acting really slow but programs run at normal speed
by Eric Mesa
Running KDE 4.6.x on Fedora 15. All of a sudden everything having to do with
the desktop is super slow. The plasmoids keep freezing up. clicking on the
launcher takes forever for something to actually appear. If I reboot, KDE
desktop is just black for a while. But it's not my computer locking up
because any programs I have running aren't slow.
Nothing's really using up a lot of CPU. I only have two guesses.
1) somethings's up with my 3D graphics drivers - although I haven't done any
package updates relating to the kernel or nvidia drivers
I know glxgears isn't the best, most accurate way to test, but I get
Code:
18143 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3628.446 FPS
20105 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4020.875 FPS
glxinfo yields:

OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 9500 GT/PCI/SSE2
OpenGL version string: 3.3.0 NVIDIA 280.13
OpenGL shading language version string: 3.30 NVIDIA via Cg compiler
it goes on and on, but I figured that was all that was important.
Disabling desktop effects did not fix the situation. Not sure if that rules
out graphics driver issues.
Not sure if this proves that things are OK with the graphics or not, but
Gnome 3 seems to run just fine. No slowness. Xfce seems to work just fine
even with compositing turned on. The only issue appears to be with KDE
2) I did update some small amount of packages fftw or something and a couple
others - seemed like no big deal.
here's what I updated today:
Oct 20 18:54:26 Updated: imsettings-libs-1.2.5-3.fc15.x86_64
Oct 20 18:54:27 Updated: imsettings-gnome-1.2.5-3.fc15.x86_64

Oct 20 18:54:30 Updated: imsettings-xfce-1.2.5-3.fc15.x86_64
Oct 20 18:54:31 Updated: fftw-libs-3.3-3.fc15.x86_64
Oct 20 18:54:32 Updated: ibus-rawcode-1.3.1.20100707-5.fc15.x86_64
Oct 20 18:54:46 Updated: 1:java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0-60.1.10.4.fc15.x86_64
Oct 20 18:54:49 Updated: perl-DateTime-TimeZone-1.40-1.fc15.noarch
I feel like KDE is getting stuck on something perhaps - waiting for
something to happen that's not happening. Or maybe something SELinux
related? If it helps with the debugging - I have the last.fm plasmoid. It
has a counter on it until the next update and I'll notice that it'll get
stuck on a number for a while and then start counting again before gettting
stuck again
