autofs/nfs issue with Fedora 16
by Richard Shaw
I use autofs to mount a nfs share that contains both the contents of
the various Fedora install DVD's and packages I've built for a local
repository. This has worked quite well on all my Fedora 14 & 15
machines.
I updated my laptop to Fedora 16 and it's having trouble see below:
[richard@laptop local]$ ll
total 0
drwxr-xr-x. 2 root root 0 Nov 6 08:46 gramps
drwxr-xr-x. 2 root root 0 Nov 6 08:46 packages
[richard@laptop local]$ cd packages/
bash: cd: packages/: No such file or directory
[richard@laptop local]$ ll
ls: cannot access packages: No such file or directory
total 0
drwxr-xr-x. 2 root root 0 Nov 6 08:46 gramps
d?????????? ? ? ? ? ? packages
[richard@laptop local]$ pwd
/net/hobbes/var/local
As you can see when I first cd into /net/hobbes/var/local I can see
the packages directory, but when I try to cd into it I can't and then
ls'ing again shows strange output.
Any ideas?
Contents of /etc/exports on hobbes:
/var/local/packages 192.168.0.0/24(ro,sync,all_squash)
/var/local/gramps 192.168.0.0/24(rw,sync)
Thanks,
Richard

An idea: good for community implementation
by Linux Tyro
Hi,
I have an idea as follows:
Fedora should celebrate every year its birth-day, like having a great party
and celebration of its success and an optional party for all to attend
(people attending with their own money of travel) and so it becomes more
like that of 'a great achievement', how this idea is?

Re: gnomebaker [WAS: Re: question(s) on Brassero (maybe bug)]
by Linda McLeod
Off the top, isn't this bug the same ole bug that happens in nearly
every new Linux distro that runs with GnomeBaker/Brassero &
MusicPlayer..? I'm bets if all the related glitch-data in the old OS's
was compiled, the experts might come-up with a viable cure-solution to
the problem never occurring again...
Off the top, on second thought.. Is the problem PC in an older Dell
which isn't properly bios-configed for Linux..? Seems a lot of the
complaints are to do with bios, as many are to do with incompatible
hardware.. and with users using the computer while it is installing new
updates.. Is there a link to data that details what damages happen to
an OS when user runs the computer while it's installing, which relates
to the scenarios that way too-many keyboards and mouses are replaced
because angry-fists cracked them into bits...
Be relaxed user.. Give the things time to fulfil a command or a
process.. especially older model PC's.. Or depending upon age of the
computer, one could change the thing's oil, or maybe add another chunk
of coal to the burner, and water to the boiler...
I just noticed in F-14 when FireFox is up, and I've clicked a Gedit word
file, it doesn't and can't come-up over the FireFox window, till FireFox
is minimized..? Is this security, or a new bug?.. Is this bug anyway
related to Fedora's other bugs..? Do bugs begat baby-bugs..? Does
overly zealous security cause some new bugs..?

F-16 should have more easy custom user default-options, right to the core...
by Linda McLeod
F-16 should have more easy custom user options, all of them, right to
the core... If something is fun the whole world loves it...
Most of my Internet work is done downloading and uploading pix-edits..
Sure would be sweet if when I clicked "save pix", the "save" would
happen right where the cursor is at the "save pix" button..
How do I eliminate the second "save pix" command, so Fedora goes
straight to saving the pix I've already asked it to save..? Like in
Gimp, I click save, and I must repeat the command.. How do I eliminate
those irritating secondary command pop-ups, so the thing does what I
wants it to do on first click..? The computer is supposedly the epitome
of efficiency.. It is not efficient when the user must set repeat
commands twice and often thrice.. though I do realize that some users
need those many safety features to mentor them through daily functions
unscathed.. some of us take full responsibility accurately for the
buttons we click.. though once I accidentally deleted a whole file of
thousands of pix.. Lucky I had backups, but I lost ten hours of edits..
Haven't done it since.. It's a hard lesson, but once burned & learned
isn't likely to be repeated... F-16 needs resou8rces to click off all
those echo safety resources, so a guy can get things done at a
high-speed velocity, without the thing forever asking for conformation
to finial decisions, is what makes using the computer feel like "it is
made for, and is addressing sleeping overly-stressed neanderthals"...
F-16 should have more genius-user options, right to the core.. maybe as
a package that digs into all defaults straight-up in a toolbox window..
maybe as an add-on apartment (or "tangential hallway") in Ailurus..?
Would be nice if there was a package that opened up the whole OS to
instant quick & easy reconfiguring...

Preparing for F16 / uid/gid limit
by Frode Petersen
In preparation for F16, I wonder what the best approach to handling the
new uid/gid limit is. I'm not upgrading, so the new limit will be in
effect after installing the new Fedora.
I always keep the old version for at least the duration of the next
release cycle, so I can go back in case of trouble. I keep all user
created data on a separate partition that I mount and then symlink
directories into the filesystem (e.g. ~/work, firefox/thunderbird
profiles), but have a separate /home/[username] for each version of
Fedora. (Just in case some user settings might change in incompatible
ways. Ref F14-F15)
The change is in raising the limit, but are there actually accounts
created in the range between the old and the new limit when installing,
or can I just change back the uid/gid numbers and the limit in
/etc/login.defs afterwards?
The other option would be to change uid/gid for all files and modify F15
accordingly. Would this require me to change more than uid/gid for all
the files and user accounts?
I guess 'chown -R newUID:newGID ~/*' would be the wrong way to do this,
if there are files with other values for oldUID/oldGID?

A general history question
by Linux Tyro
Hi,
Excited to see this world of Linux. A general question came in mind
regarding the origin of Linux.
Well, it (Linux) is basically a kernel -- perhaps same in majority of all
the distros, almost all. Well, openSUSE also uses the technique of .rpm
which is again Red Hat Package Manager. So basically i get to know that it
was initially in Linux two sides -- 1) debian 2) rpm (as already discussed)
but just wanted to know that openSUSE also has been derived from Redhat
like many other distros have....?
And out of debian and .rpm, both seem to be the oldest but I guess debian
is more old...? Was just talking of linux not unix (like freebsd).

question(s) on Brassero (maybe bug)
by Paul Allen Newell
I am trying out burning DVDs on F14 and I am seeing some weirdness that
I would like to understand before I call it a bug.
I burn a directory on F14. The directory structure is deep (as in
greater than the pop-up notice of 7) and the names should be within 60
characters. Brassero asks me about renaming to be Windows compatible
owing to 64 characters and I disable since no files should hit that
limit (and testing later indicates there are no 64+ file names).
Brassero gets all wound up over the depth of the directory tree and I
tell it just add them.
The burned disk is exactly what I would expect on Linux/F14
On Windows, it is a useless work of whatever. It can't read anything and
everything is all CAPS. I know that Windows is an all CAPS under the
hood from long ago ... but I've been able to work case-sensitive on my
XP for awhile.
Since I have to assume that I am not understanding things, can anyone
tell me how to use Brassero to get a exact copy? The Brassero->help just
tells me about the pop-ups I already see.
I can burn a DVD on Windows XP with Nero that is readable on Windows and
Linux, hard to believe that native Fedora can't do the same (???)
I do not want to burn an iso ... I want a DVD burn which I can access as
a normal Linux/Window directory.
Thanks in advance,
Paul

Preparing for F16 / Grub 1-2

Will there still be an option to install the new grub 2 in the os
partition instead of the disk boot partition?
