Installing Fedora with LVM and LUKS, using the encryption layer on top of the LVM layer.
by yudi v
I am trying to install Fedora 15 32bit on a laptop with 750Gb Advanced
Format WD drive.
the partition scheme I have in my mind is like this:
sda1 100GB Win7
sda2 500MB /boot
sda3 500GB LVM (also the PV and the VG)
-LV 15GB /root (encrypted)
-LV 50GB /home (encrypted)
-LV 4GB swap partition (encrypted)
- leave the rest unassigned for the time being
sda4 150GB NTFS ( whatever is left)
I successfully setup a test system with the LUKS layer under the LVM, that
is encrypting the whole PV rather than encrypting individual LVs. It boots
fine without any issues and I only have to enter the pass phrase once. Now I
would like to change this setup with the LVM layer below the LUKS layer.
That way I do not have to worry about decrypting 500Gb at every boot.
I would like to know if there is a way to decrypt all the encrypted LVs
with one pass phrase.

RE: jack audio kit
by Zoran Spasojevic
Actually on boot I get the following message before I start any
applications:
KDE detected that one or more internal sound devices were removed.
*Do you want KDE to permanently forget about these devices?*
This is the list of devices KDE thinks can be removed:
*
Capture: Default
*
Output: Default
*
Output: M Audio Audiophile 24/96, ICE1712 multi (IEC958 (S/PDIF)
Digital Audio Output
Only once I was able to get any sound from any audio/video applications
when I uncommented the line in /etc/pulse/default.pa
#load-module module-alsa-source device=hw:1,0
This was when pulseaudio was installed.
Then the sound went away and I have not been able to recover it.
Thanks,
Zoran

This string was copied from "Fedora 15 won't do automatic updates" since
it applies to a totally different subject.
First some background:
I upgraded from F13 to F14 using preupgrade some months ago. I like to
stay one release back from the most current release. I like to be on
the cutting edge but I have an aversion to bleeding.
After a while I began to get upgrade notices about gimp that would not
install due to a missing dependency. That was when I noticed that it
was trying to install an F13 package. After much effort trying to
resolve the missing dependency I decided to run preupgrade again on Sun
Jul 10. That solved the problem with the gimp package but now I don't
seem to be getting any package update notices.
Enough with the background already:
I spent some time in Google looking for instructions on how to 'verify
the version of your "fedora-release" package' but came up empty. Could
you elucidate this point more thoroughly.
As you suggested I checked /etc/yum.repos.d/ for a hard coded reference
to F13. The only hard coded reference to F13 was a line in
packagekit-media.repo. I changed the line in packagekit-media.repo
from name=Fedora 13
to name=Fedora 14
The output of "yum -v repolist" after the change is:
[root@mushroom yum.repos.d]# yum -v repolist

You'll need to boot the VM off of a rescue disk; the Fedora 14 install
disk will do it. Then you can try fscking your boot disk, and if that
doesn't fix it you can run grub-install per the rescue instructions
(available online). If THAT doesn't work, you'll probably need to
reinstall. I personally don't know of any easier way to do it; it's
almost certainly one of 2 things:
1. your grub installation is messed up (so it can't find your root disk)
2. your root disk is messed up

I only ever use Evolution under KDE. It uses gnome-keyring just as it does under Gnome. The only difference is that Evo prompts you for the keyring password on starting up under a new session (just the first
time) as it doesn't get this info automatically from the login widget as it does under Gnome.

Seen that behaviour.
Any chance of changing that? I mean, that gnome-keyring picking up the proper credentials?

I have been using Evolution under Gnome for a long time and under Gnome on my machine ....

Very well, but the whole issue is about: using evolution under something else than Gnome.

Perhaps for the people reading the thread on this list....
It is not a good thing the have the policy of iptables set to "accept", and drop what you want.
If you ever misses one port, you are as vulnerable as you would have been without any rules.
Better approach is:
1) to set the policy to drop everything,
2) allow what is needed,
4) log everything else.
If you find you log gets to bulky, you can introduce stap 3) to drop traffic from specific port&address before everything else is logged.
In this way, everything that you forgets, will be logged & dropped, instead of allowed in.
