How do I go about requesting another install option "Minimal Desktop"?
I'm finding myself removing a lot of packages after Graphical desktop

Understanding fc17 partitioning
by Alex
Hi,
I just did an install of fc17 x86_64 on a box with 4 SATA 250GB disks
and set up the partitions manually. I created /boot on sda as one
500MB partition, then two RAID partitions using the rest of the
contents of the disks. The first is a RAID1 with four disks for root
and the rest is /var.
Is there a command-line gparted or is it no longer possible to edit
the partition table from the command-line?
Why is there a mixture of old fdisk and new GPT disk layout?
How can I determine which disks are part of which array after the
install? My mdadm.conf just has the UUIDs in it...
# cat /proc/mdstat

Re: any suggestions for these F17 upgrade problems (can not boot)?

By installing from the install DVD, then by yum running from the rescue
mode of the install DVD.
Eventually I got rid of all the other kernels which had been on the
machine, and now I have only the kernel from the F17 install
(3.3.4-5.fc17.x86_64)

Thanks for the tips. I tried all you suggest, and I think I have an init
ramdisk image with everything needed, it just won't load for some reason.
When trying to boot I still end up in the debug shell after getting these
messages:
dracut Warning: Unable to process initqueue
dracut Warning: /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 does not exist
dracut Warning: /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 does not exist
I can run "/sbin/modprobe cciss" and the /dev/cciss/* devices show up. I
can run "/sbin/lvm_scan" and the /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol?? devices
show up.
After doing that I ran /init and the system started to boot, but hung at
the fedora splash image. Usually hitting escape key at that point will
get rid of the image and show the console messages scrolling by, but it
does not at this point, which I assume means something hung really hard.
Just to be sure the driver load was actually working OK, after the system
rebooted again and ended up in the debug shell again, I did the
/sbin/modprobe, /sbin/lvm_scan sequence, and mounted
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 and made sure all the files I expected
were there.
So the question is why does the initrd not do the modprobe and lvm_scan
(or the equivalent if that is not literally what happens) on its own? The
drivers are obviously there, and I can mount the filesystem after manually
loading the drivers, but I don't understand the normal sequence after grub
hands over to the kernel and the initramfs image.

setting Network Printer with static IP in DD-WRT
by Mickey
Fedora 17, I have my Network printer setup and printing in Fedora.
In DD-WRT how do I setup a Network Printer as a Static IP or MAC# ? the
printer is setup with Static IP.
The problem I'm having eveytime the power goes out the Router changes
DHCP IP and I have to go into Fedora and make IP setting change.
I ask that question on the the DD-WRT Forum and they deleted my post.
Yes, I'm a registered member at DD-wrt forum.

[Totally OT] Some web sites very slow recently
by Jonathan Ryshpan
A friend of mine and I have both noticed that access to some -- but not
all -- web sites has become much slower recently. Some sites time out,
others hang, apparently while waiting for ads to load; a bad guy may be
meebo. I have no trouble with Google and most technical sites; NY times
is erratic; other political and news sites are variable, some very slow.
Frequently a hung site can be restarted by stopping the download and
then restarting it.
Has anyone else noticed this? Any ideas what has happened?

Solution to RAID /boot issue in fc17?
by Alex
Hi,
I believe the ability to have /boot on RAID was removed in fc15 so in
fc16, /boot was a single partition, like /dev/sda1. I recently had my
primary disk fail on one of my systems, and recovering with a failed
sda was very difficult.
Has this issue been fixed in fc17? Is it now possible install RAID on
/boot so there are multiple disks that can be used to read the boot
information?
I still don't understand why LVM is the default layout method when
there is no redundancy. I also choose to create my own filesystem
layout, as tedious as it has become.
Is the 2MB BIOS BOOT partition necessary?
Thanks,
Alex

Make F17 automount disks?
by Beartooth
Where can I tell F17 under fxce if possible) I want it to
automount any disk I put into a drive?? (In addition to its own internal
drive for removable media, each machine can also be connected to an
external USB drive.)

syslogd and rsyslogd enabled?
by Tom Horsley
I've just been going through my new install tweaking
checklist, and when I checked what services were enabled
I found my new f17 install had both syslog.service and
rsyslog.service enabled.
Does that make sense?
I only see rsyslog.service enabled in fedora 16.
