Re: failed f16 preupgrade, now stuck in grub2 rescue, can't exit [SOLVED]
by Jackson Byers
I finally was able to unfreeze my system,
simply by booting from my old knoppix cd
and re-installing my grub data-partition to
the mbr of the first internal hdisk.
first, an additional comment:
>the original fail message:
> GRUB loading
> Welcome to GRUB!
> error: no such device: 8f24…blahblah
> Entering rescue mode …
> grub rescue
I had previously interpreted this fail message
as coming from the grub2 of the failed preupgrade f14->f16
But now I am not at all sure;
it might have been from the legacy grub of the f14.
Does anyone know if the message shown above
is legacy grub, or grub2?
It would be good to know;
I spent gobs of time trying to dope out this mess.
Uncertainty in error messages don't help.
Detail:
it turned out to be trivial.
Actual sequence:
1) turned off the USB; hit power switch;
2) power back on, comes up with same above error message,
so those steps not necessary.
3) left USB external hdisk off.
That most likely not necessary but it made absolutely sure
my grub commands to follow couldn't refer to the USB.
4) booted again with knoppix cd
grub
root (hd1,8) <<<2d hdisk, 9th partition
setup (hd0) <<< mbr, 1st hdisk
quit
system gave usual grub response..............succeeded.
logged out, shutdown knoppix cd
removed knoppix cd.
turned USB back on;
computer power on,
booted back up to my normal grub menu,
back in f14 (of course, not the version I used for abortive preupgrade).
maybe now I can get my life back, no more waking up in middle of nite...

Evolution 3.4.3 mystery]
by Aaron Konstam
Using Evolution 3.4.3 when I go into preferences -> account->edit
There is a click option: Make this account my default account.
If I click that and then click apply the next time I edit the account
that option is not clicked (or chosen).
What has gone wrong

failed f16 preupgrade, now stuck in grub2 rescue, can't exit
by Jackson Byers
I am now stuck in an unresponsive grub2: ]
grub rescue >
it responds to a few commands, such as 'ls'
but in particular it fails on
exit
which is supposed to quit, instead says
unknown command 'exit'.
I was attempting a preupgrade from one of my two f14 installs,
both of which worked, prior to this latest problem.
Most of the preupgrade seemed to proceed as expected
but near the end gets pushed to 'grub rescue'.
One difficulty is that my f14 is installed to external usb,
but my bios won't boot from usb, so the boot files have to
be put somewhere on my two internal scsi disks,
which works for me for f14 and f12, f11 also,
( still working, before this present problem.)
This damaged grub 2 rescue appears to be
only remaining small piece of f16 install:
most of the f16 install was erased in my frantic attempts
at getting out from this locked-in position.
advice? magic solutions?
Would it help to reinstall my legacy f14 grub to mbr of first internal disk?
Why should this be necessary?
I did not choose to install f16 bootloader to mbr.
I am quite sure about this.
I can view the system using an old knoppix cd.
thanks for any advice

OSDisc USB installer
by Zoltan Hoppar
Greetings,
I have ordered earlier an linux installer on a 16G pendrive, but
somehow Fedora can't mount it - as it's seems from outside. I tried
almost everything, but I can't find the drive itself, maybe I have
only missed somehow. Question is - how can I mount it, and make it
viewable in Nautilus? Did anyone met with this problem?
Thanks
Zoltan

F17 upgrade with yum
by Mark Haney
Since I'm stick in F17 limbo due to the stupid 'dirty filesystem' bug in
the normal upgrade process, it looks like I'm going to have to do an
upgrade via yum.
Who's done it and what were your experiences? I am planning to do mine
on an Samsung netbook that's not quite a year old. It's got plenty of
RAM and drive space and it runs F16 really well.

Fixing KDE Desktop FC16
by Javier Perez
Hi
How can I fix the KDE Desktop on a FC16 system.
I set up this for an in-law and today that I went to update it, I noticed
that the desktop says on the upper right hand corner "Copy of Desktop" and
none of the usual desktop icons is around.
How can I fix this? I 've been googling around but have not found anything
useful yet, maybe I am not using the right keywords.
Thanks!

Binding mouse wheel scroll and cursor keys in screen
by Suvayu Ali
Hi,
I want to bind mouse wheel scroll and cursor keys with modifier keys in
screen but I am not sure what key code or termcap capability to
use. This is what I have tried so far with no luck.
For mouse wheel scroll:
bindkey -k SF copy
bindkey -k SR copy
bindkey -k sf copy
bindkey -k sr copy
bindkey -k cs copy
bindkey -k kF copy
bindkey -k kR copy
The following works for now: bindkey -k k8 copy (for Fn 8)
Cursor keys:
+ Here I expect to switch window with C-o <left/right>
bind \033[C next
bind \033[D prev
+ Here I expect to switch window with C-<left/right>
bindkey -d ^[[1;5D prev
bindkey -d ^[[1;5C next
+ This one was just to see if binding arrow keys work. I expected just
<left/right> to switch windows.
bindkey -d ^[[D prev
bindkey -d ^[[C next
This works however:
bindkey -k kr next
bindkey -k kl prev
What am I missing here? Thanks for any pointers,

How to configure wirelless with files on F15
by Adel ESSAFI
Hello,
I tried to manage my wireless via some command lines (to make my laptop act
like access point).
I could not obtain the desired result.
I would know if it is possible to configure wireless directly through the
configuration files in /etc. Which file should I modify.
Finally, this is what I obtain when I try to start wireless via ifconfig.
Thanks for any response.
[root@localhost ~]# ifconfig wlan0 up

Modifying nm-dhclient-wlan0.conf ?
by Bruno Wolff III
My short term goal is to set up resolv.conf the way I want without
disabling network manager.
I set up a config file for dhclient, but it turns out that NetworkManager
runs dhclient with the configfile set to one it generates insteqad of
the normal one used by dhclient. For the first wireless interface the
file is named /var/run/nm-dhclient-wlan0.conf .
Is there a way to control what is in that file using NetworkManager
configuration?

fedora 16 to 17upgrade fails again
by Patrick Dupre
Hello,
This is the second time that it happens:
The uograde from fedora 16 to 17 fails with the message:
The /usr merge script failed. THis is required for Fedora 17 to work.
The upgrade cannot continue.
Then, it is impossible to boor on the previous installation.
This is a real serious bug (x86_64)
Thank
Regards.
