Anyone seeing spurious characters in their text?
by Temlakos
With the latest Fedora kernel build (4.2.8-200.fc22.x86_64), I see this
behavior:
A string of spurious characters, beginning with a digit 6 and continuing with an unending stream of digit-8 characters, suddenly appears and fills whatever text workspace, dialog box, etc. currently has the focus. If the application has the focus, these spurious characters act like keystrokes attempting to initiate a keyboard-triggered menu command or other command.
Sometimes the string consists of digits 5. This can cause a problem with applications like Thunderbird, which uses digit 5 as a command to toggle the "can wait" flag on a piece of e-mail.
Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
4.2.8-200.fc22.x86_64
How reproducible:
Happens at random during a session with any application putting a focus on a particular text working area or other area sensitive to keystrokes of any kind.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start a browser, a word processor, a text editor, or any other application having a text working area of any kind.
2. Place the focus on a particular text working area. For safety's sake, do this in an empty document in a plain-text editor, like KWrite.
3. Watch and wait. (Although sometimes spurious characters will appear as you type!)
Actual results:
Without your typing anything, the machine will start with a digit 6 and then continue with an unbreaking string of 8's. The only way to break it is with another keystroke of your own. After that you have to erase the spurious characters.
Sometimes the machine will throw a number "68" into your text as you are typing. This leaves you with a typographical error you must correct. And it can salt your text with typographical errors requiring as much time to remove as it took to type the text to begin with!
Expected results:
No character, of any description, should appear without your striking a key.
Additional info:
This error has occurred before. It crops up on occasion with a kernel update and vanishes one or at most two updates later. Everyone knows about it. Before now, it was a Plague of Fives. Now it is a Plague of Eights.
A spurious number 68 introduced itself into my text as I was typing this report.
The nature of the error, and its apparent dependency on versions of the kernel, should preclude any consideration of a hardware fault like "sticking keys."
Filed with Bugzilla as Bug No. 1299130. Assigned to the Kernel
Maintainers' Group. Add this to it: I fell back on the next earlier
version of the kernel. And the problem vanished. So let no one say I'm
just typing on a keyboard with sticky keys. Temlakos

digital ocean setup-droplet basic tutorial/questions
by bruce
Hi list.
Taking the plunge to setup some test digital ocean (DO) droplets.
These aren't to be used for web servers, but to be used to run test
apps, and to get a better understanding of actually setting up/plying
with some of the different aspects of a small amount of sys admin.
So, that I don't blow it, I thought I'd post here, and perhaps a few
of my questions can be answered, saving me psin/headache. And hey,
others might learn as well. I've looked over different sites/youtube
vids for a good chunk of these questions, but want to make sure I'm
going down the right path.
I want to setup a few (4-5) different test servers. I want the servers
to be able to communicate with each other via name. I'd also like to
be able to access one of the servers by name, to allow me to ssh into
the box via name, as opposed to ipaddress.
Everything I've seen suggests that I need a domainName, but I suspect
that's due to most people wanting to setup webservers. If I'm setting
up a box within DO's ip range, the box(es) shouldn't need an actual
domain name should they?? I can understand that for a box to be
accessed via/external to DO, it might need a domain name.
+---------------------------------- +
box 1
box 2
box3 <<<------------------ outside boxA (from
internet to box3)
digital ocean ip world
+-------- ----------------- ----- +
where does the domain name come in?
where does the DNS setup come in.. ?
box (1-3) will be internal/DO boxes
For each box, I assume I'll have to have a dns entry for each box
(ip/name) yes/no?
Once this gets resolved I can test out setting up nfs/mysql servers,
and having the ability to access the boxes by name from each other.
Thoughts/comments..
Thanks

Unable to locate printer
by Stephen Davies
I have a Lexmark E120 network connected via ethernet.
Occasionally, attempts to print to this printer result in the subject error
message.
So, the only resolution that I have found is to reboot the box. The printer
then works for a while.
I'm not sure how long it lasts as I rarely print anything.
Rebooting is a bit drastic for the occasional print so I hope there is a
better fix.
Cheers and thanks,
Stephen

Unset environment variable when building rpm
by arnaud gaboury
I need to unset one of my environment variable to successfully build a
rpm package.
I added this in my .spec file, but apparently it doesn't work:
-------------------------------------------------------
if [ -n $R_PROFILE_USER ];then
unset R_PROFILE_USER
fi
------------------------------------------------
What is the correct way to unset for build time a env variable?
Thank you

dnsmasq for simple names
by Patrick O'Callaghan
I want to set up a local dnsmasq server to resolve local hostnames on
my LAN. I'm not (for the moment) concerned with DHCP, just DNS. I'd
like to do this without defining a local doman, so that host foo just
resolves to foo's IP address. The dnsmasq.conf file appears to allow
this because defining a local domain is optional, however it isn't
working for me:
$ grep foo /etc/hosts
192.168.1.73 foo
$ dig foo
; <<>> DiG 9.10.3-P2-RedHat-9.10.3-7.P2.fc23 <<>> foo
;; global options: +cmd
;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 37194
;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 1, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0
;; QUESTION SECTION:
;foo. IN A
;; ANSWER SECTION:
foo. 30 IN A nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn
(That IP corresponds to some random host somewhere, nothing to do with
me).
No doubt this is something very stupid but a hint would be appreciated.
Note that I have blocked DNS referrals for unqualified names (option
domain-needed)

OT: Upgradeing Windows 7 to 10 on a Dual Boot System?
by Michael D. Setzer II
My Classroom Lab at the College has Lenovo I7 computers that came with
Windows 7 about 2 years ago. I changed them to dual boot with Fedora, and
just recently upgraded them to Fedora 23. Never had any issues with the
installation of the Fedora or doing updates. I wanted to check out the
Windows 10 upgrade process on one machine, but have run into all kinds of
issues.
1. Booting the Windows 7, the Windows 10 upgrade would just keep showing
the option to request the upgrade and I would be notified. Never got any
notification??
2. When thru some web pages, and found a link that was upgrade now, and
it seemed to down and go thru the process of getting the Windows 10 files.
Said it was going to reboot, and install. It rebooted, and still had the grub
menu, so selected the windows option, and it seemed to be doing something,
but then came up with an error message and said it could complete. Took me
to a web page, but of couse the error number wasn't anywhere to be found
there or on a search. Just restored the W7 image, so dual boot process is
fine.
Are there any tricks to getting the upgrade to work with a dual boot setup.
Don't know if the Windows 10 upgrade can not handle a grub boot loader
setup?
Thanks.
Use Linux for all my courses, but other teachers sometimes need to do
things on the windows, and wanted to at least take a look at it.
