Recover from unintended dd
by Kalpa Welivitigoda
Hi all,
I wanted to create a live install media from by flash drive using dd.
Following is the command I used,
sudo dd bs=4M if=Fedora-Live-Desktop-x86_64-19-1.iso of=/dev/sdc1
The sad part is /dev/sdc1 happened to be my external hard disk (I wanted to
write the image to my flash disk), this was by mistake.
Now I cannot access files in my external hard disk. My hard disk is 1TB and
had only one partition. With this dd now it has two partitions (sdc1 and
sdc2), following are the outputs of trying to mount them,
$ sudo mount /dev/sdc1 abc/
mount: mount /dev/sdc1 on /tmp/abc failed: Structure needs cleaning
$ sudo mount /dev/sdc2 abc/
mount: /dev/sdc2 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdc2,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so.
I googled for the issue and read that it is hard to recover.
Have any of you experienced a similar situation and recovered?
Any help/clue to get the hard disk recovered is highly appreciated.

NPAPI Plugins and Firefox
by Stephen Morris
Hi,
I'm currently using Nightly V53 of Firefox and a lot of the plugins
provided by Fedora that I have installed Firefox refuses to use, this
included the Gnome Shell Integration plugin. It appears that as of
Firefox Release V52 onwards which appears to be scheduled for around the
end of the year, support for the NPAPI code set is being dropped for
everything except Flash, and Mozilla has indicated they will not budge
from that timeline even though a Commercial Application Vendor has
requested they delay the implementation until August/September 2017 so
that they can change their applications.
Is there any possibility that the plugins for this like the Gnome
Shell Integration, Totem etc can be rewritten to remove their NPAPI usage?

Steve

Racket & Fedora
by Gour
Hello,
recently moved to Fedora and I’m a bit surprised that there is no
package for Racket language. Found
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1301219 and it seems nobody
is workin on it, so wonder if any Racketeers can suggest recommend way
to install/use Racket on Fedora (f25)?
Sincerely,
Gour

How Do I Upgrade from Fedora Workstation 23 to 24?
by Turritopsis Dohrnii Teo
Dear Fedora Users,
I have just downloaded and booted up the Fedora Workstation Live 24
DVD. It seems that there is no option to upgrade my existing Fedora
Workstation 23 to 24. The only option appears to be fresh new
installation in which I would lose all existing data.
Please advise me on how I can achieve upgrade installation with Fedora
Workstation 24 Live DVD.
Thank you very much.

/boot on btrfs
by Gour
Hello,
I plan to put Fedora very soon on my desktop machine to replace Debian,
but noticed that /boot on btrfs is not supported although, iirc, I was
using the same setup under both openSUSE and Debian when using btrfs.
At the moment I do use xfs/raid1, but considering to switch (back) to
btrfs since simplifies setup having features of both lvm+raid.
However, the need for separate /boot makes is a little cummbersome…there
is one issue in regard:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=864198 so wonder if there is
possibility to have support for /boot on btrfs in f25?
Sincerely,
Gour

centos 6.8 - time - digital ocean..
by bruce
Hey guys.
I know most of the questions are fed based.. but I've got a centos 6.8
from digital ocean testing..
So, bear with me..
In setting up the instance to use EST I did the following steps. Is
there anything else I missed...
Change the date/time (as root)
rm -rf /etc/localtime
ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/New_York /etc/localtime
##--set the date to the correct date
date -s 'actual/current date'
vi /etc/sysconfig/clock
ZONE="America/New_York"
UTC=false
ARC=false
I then rebooted, checked that the date cmd displayed the correct date...
I'm asking ,as I created a base instance of a Centos 6.8 image..
Digitalocean allows for the generation of "snapshots"/copies. The
copies can then be used to generate a clone of the initial
instance/droplet.
I did all of that, and lo/behold, when I run the date cmd..
I get
# date
Sat Nov 19 21:45:43 EST 2016 <<< (note the 5 hr ahead diff.. which if
i recall is the UTC time)
Instead of
# date
Sat Nov 19 16:45:43 EST 2016
Thanks for the sanity check!

ssh/screen -- cmdline vs php
by bruce
Hey guys..
I crafted a test php app to generate the test cmdline to ssh into the
remote box, attach to the screen, and fire off the testApp...
This works as expected from the cmdline...
I
su - crawl_user,
then run the cmd, take a look on another term, that's set to the
ipAddress. When I attach to the screen.. I see the app running..
Checking the procTbl shows the app running as well...
However....
when I run the cmd from a test php... using backticks.. the remote
ssh/screen/app isn't run...
Any pointers on what I can look at to debug this..
the actual cmd that works on the cmdline::
ssh -t crawl_user(a)162.243.166.31 "screen -r crawlSession -X stuff
'/crawl_tmp/startCollegeCrawl_test_bycol.php --crawlDir /crawl_tmp
--nfsDir /cloud_nfs --nfsFetchDir /cloud_nfs_fetch --colName
austincc_0'$(echo -ne '\015') "
the test php that generates the above cmd...
//--run the bycol for the college, using the ipAddress..
$scmd="ssh -t crawl_user@".$bycol_ip_list[$cnt].' "screen -r
crawlSession -X stuff ';
$scmd=$scmd."'/crawl_tmp/startCollegeCrawl_test_bycol.php
--crawlDir /crawl_tmp ";
$scmd=$scmd."--nfsDir /cloud_nfs --nfsFetchDir /cloud_nfs_fetch ";
$scmd=$scmd."--colName ".$d."'$(echo -ne '\\015') ".'"';
print "bycol cmd .. ".$scmd."\n";
$scmd=`$scmd`;
print " stop..bycol sleeping prior to starting..\n";
exit();
thanks....

Howto reduce the size of /tmp as tmpfs?
by Frédéric Bron
/tmp uses 8 Gb, that is half of my RAM. Then my RAM is fully occupied
as soon as I open Plasma+Firefox+Thunderbird. But /tmp is used at 1%
only. Can I reduce it to 4Gb? I do not see any entry in /etc/fstab
(have F24).
Thanks,
Frédéric
