Openh264, ffmpeg,etc.
by Ger van Dijck
Hi Fedora/Linux Lovers,
I have the impression that the problems with Fedora-Cisco-Openh264 and
FFmpeg gives me the idea of "The ever continued story of
Coronationstreet".
When I do an dnf update I get the following message:
Fedora 39 openh264 (From Cisco)-x86_64 Errors during downloading for
fedora-cisco-openh264.
Statuscode 404 for
https://codecs/fedoraproject.org/openh264/39/x86_64/repodata/repomd.xml
(IP 18.133.140.134).
Cannot download repodata/repomd.xml : All mirrors were tried.
Failed to download metadata for "fedora-cisco-openh264".
I found a solution in downloading Repo Terra 39 Fedora and could
install openh264 : And all , you dont believe it functioned.
I had a very helpsome discussion with Tom Horsley, Samual Sieb,Jef
Walton and Go Cames.
When giving dnf info openh264 I got from Terra 39 Fedora installed
packages : Repos Terra 39 Fedora openh264 Fedora URL

by olivares33561
Dear fellow fedora users,
upon updating and rebooting the new kernel refuses to boot or just hangs. How do I troubleshoot this issue?
I have to boot 6.5.12-300 so I can use the computer.
Thanks in Advance,

ch341-uart - ttyUSBx disconnecting???
by Jeffrey Ross
I'm trying to connect an Arduino to my system (Fedora 38 -
6.5.12-200.fc38.x86_64) that uses a ch341 serial uart.
I've been searching around and found issues on other distributions and
the "brltty" application, since I don't need braille I removed the
application but the problem remains. I have also found a different
driver called "CH341SER" so I tried unloading the existing ch341 module
and installing CH341SER (module shows up as ch34x) but other than
tainting the kernel it made no different so I unloaded the module.
I have been unable find anything specific to Fedora or anything
relatively new but it appears to be a common issue across multiple
distributions.
Any pointers would be appreciated, see below for dmesg output.
Thanks,
Jeff

Apple camera formats heic and hevc
by Robert McBroom
Apple new formats for photos and videos are giving me trouble just
transferring files from the phone. Keep getting invalid format in
transfer even though the functions on the phone are fine. Anyone else
having problems? Any editors? Gimp seems to overlap parts of the live
photo to a ragged fixed photo.

desktop power button
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
Fedora 39
MATE 1.26
I have been tasked to set up a kiosk at a cusomter's
site with Fedroa: The users their are walk in customer's
wanting to pay bills, etc.. So Firefox, Brave, LibreOffice,
gcals, etc.. The users will be very, very, very low skill
users.
I was going to install MATE on it because it is danged simple
to operate.
The only issues is that the "system" shutdown/reboot is hard
to find for such a low skill user(s).
I would like a desktop icon to shutdown/reboot/sleep
their computer. My own system is dual Xfce/MATE. A
search of the MATE app installed does not show one
or I can not find it.
I see qshutdown on the web, but not in the Fedora repo.
And it is a bit too complicated for low skill users.
I do see kshutdown and gshutdown in the repo, but still a
bit too complicated.
Any ideas about a utility that would allow me to create
really, really low skill user shutdown icon for
their desktop?
I may have to compromise on gshutdown. Be cool if I could locate
what MATE calls from the system menu.
Many thanks,
-T

chromium will not start
by Michael Hennebry
I recently installed the chromium browser on F38.
It won't start. At least it won't stay started very long.
When I start it from the command line, I get this:
$ chromium-browser

I don't even know what that means.
What profile?
What is Midcontinent doing with it? How?
Why is a "profile" even involved?
Who is making money off my "profile"? How?
I have no idea how I would unlock my "profile".
I suppose the claim will be made that it is for security.
Grrr.

weekly patches crippled my display.
by home user
(f38; home workstation; dual monitor;
using nvidia 4xx kmod and akmod from rpmfusion)
A short while ago, I did my weekly patches. After rebooting, only one monitor is displaying anything, and then with a large, wide font. I saw no indication of trouble during the "dnf upgrade". The boot messages go by fast, but I think I saw something about a missing module, and nouveau being used.
I'm not a sys.admin., and the display is very limited. What's the cause of these problems, and how do I fix things?

OT: X11: how to make cut-and-paste with mouse also work on every
window
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
I know this is OT, but someone here might know the answer to this.
So, I like the ability to highlight with my mouse left button, and paste with my middle (scroll) button. It works on `xterm` but not necessarily on my firefox window (some other windows too, but I do not recall now). Is there a way to set this up so that it can work reliably on every window?
Many thanks and best wishes,
Ranjan

How to get rid of current color selection in terminal?
by Peter Boy
The current selection of color in Server ASCII terminal (not in Gnome terminal) and the choice of the prompt including the complete current path is quite awful for people who are dependent on glasses due to eye sight problems, for example.
How can I switch back to the F38 of better F36 configuration? Or at least switch off the colors? All I found on the internet doesn’t work in Fedora.

USB ethernet wake-on-LAN?
by Chris Adams
I have a new ThinkPad T14s AMD 4th gen notebook, and a USB-C ethernet
adapter. I would like to be able to send wake-on-LAN to the notebook
for some uses.
The ethernet adapter also has a USB-C port for power delivery (so it can
also charge the notebook). When the notebook is suspended, the ethernet
link stays up (LEDs are lit on both it and the switch port). It also
shows support for wake-on-LAN, defaulting to magic packet mode.
I tried the "old-style" /proc/acpi/wakeup (which shows enabled for the
USB in question) as well as /sys/bus/usb/devices/*/power/wakeup (which
all defaulted to disabled, but I enabled them too). However, nothing
seemed to work.
I have other systems with built-in/PCIe NICs that I can wake; it's just
this one with the USB (because no built-in NIC) that's a problem. The
BIOS has a setting for USB wake-on-LAN with the official dock (which was
enabled), but I didn't see anything else that looked relevant.
Any suggestions?
