You may want to rename (I say "rename" rather than "delete" because it's always a good idea to keep a backup somewhere) your ~/.kde/share/config/digikamrc, where ~ is your home directory.

In the end i renamed all of .kde and rebooted. digikam is now working. As i don't use kde per se (and hadn't until now got a working digikam) I'm happy to let the contents of .kde get regenerated as needed.
