Recently, my laptop died and I had to buy a new one. Now, I'd
like to
take a look at what hardware is inside. I know that there used to be a
program to show you all of the hardware, but it's been so long since I
needed it that I can't remember its name. I'd appreciate it if somebody
could point me in the right direction.

You may open a command line terminal and type
$ sudo lspci
And it will show hardware information for your PC. There was also a dmidecode? Or similar
program
