I am having problems upgrading to fedora from 2.4.9 xfs,

i don't know why some of the features such as ipchains disappears and
X windows cannot get started after the upgrade. Is there a procedure
or links explaining the procedures on how to upgrade redhat 7.1/7.2 to
fedora.

ipchains was replaced by iptables when some years ago the kernel 2.4
became stable. There is still ipchains in the kernel but I recommend to
learn about the iptables changes. They are worth the small efforts.
iptables is improved over ipchains because it has stateful inspection
capabilities.
To check problems with the X Windows System (Windows[tm] is a trademark
by Microsoft) the starting point is always it's log under /var/log.
