Because my BIOS will not boot from a SCSI CD-ROM, I have
to jump through some minor hoops to install Fedora.
Here are notes I have from when Conor Daly advised me of the
hoops through which I had to jump:
Here are instructions I used to install Fedora Core 3
a few years ago. Note I cannot boot from scsi cdrom.

re: I want to install Fedora Core 3 but can't boot from scsi cdrom
1. Loopmount diskboot.img
2. Copy vmlinuz and initrd.img (with unique names) to
your /boot directory
3. Configure grub (you should be on grub with RH7.3) to
boot from the copied kernel
4. At boot time type 'linux askmethod' and you'll get to
specify the CDROM
I used this method to install FC3 online. Just downloaded
the boot.iso and chose 'ftp' as the install method...
or
1. Copy boot.iso to your hard disk
2. Configure grub to boot from the iso [0]
3. At boot time type 'linux askmethod' and you'll get to
specify the CDROM
This assumes that there is a suitable scsi driver available
in the initrd.img. If not, you can go about it this way.
1. copy the contents of the CDs to the hard disk (second
and subsequent CDs' rpm files go in the RPMS directory
copied from the first CD
2. Use either of the above boot methods and specify 'hard
disk' as the source.
NB. Make sure you copy the CD contents to a filesystem that
is _not_ going to be formatted at install time otherwise
there'll be nothing there for the installer to use!

general.msg isolinux.cfg rescue.msg vesamenu.c32
So I plan on copying initrd.img and vmlinuz to /boot
cp /tmp/mountpoint/isolinux/initrd.img /boot/initrd-f7-install.img
cp /tmp/mountpoint/vmlinuz /boot/vmlinuz-f7-install
and modifying grub to:
title Fedora 7 install
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-f7-install ro root=/dev/hda3
initrd /initrd-f7-install.img
What I'm not sure of is if the install will allow me to
access the external hard drive for the installation.
Have I made any mistakes in what I plan on doing?

I'm guessing there can actually be a reason, but why not get a $15 IDE
DVD-ROM drive and add it to this box for the install?

You might have problems with this because F7 expects the partitions to
be named as sda instead of hda. All drives are treated as scsi now
whether they are or not. There is information on this in the release
notes online.

downloaded the dvd iso. I copied the following two files
to the /boot on my internal drive.

the install.

Grub can only read /boot during it's run.
1. The ~equivalent of a boot floppy these days is:
boot.iso {to write to a cd} and diskboot.img {to use directly from grub}.
So, mount the dvd some where, and copy diskboot.img to your /boot/
directory.
2. install syslinux {to get memdisk}, and copy memdisk to /boot/
3. Add an additional entry to grub:
label fc7 installer
kernel memdisk
initrd diskboot.img
boot and select this option from grub.
anaconda {the installer} will note that you dont seem to have the
installation source, and ask where it is. IMHO the easiest way is to
have the .iso file in the root of the hard drive that it's on. You need
to remember the partition number as well {there is no viewer - but you
can keep trying if you get it wrong}.
My question is when I start the installation, will I
have access to the external firewire harddrive for
the install.
You'll know for sure once you try it. I have done similar from usb
external drives, and I know modern kernels have support for 1394 interface.
I haven't done it this way in a while, so let us know how you go.

Hi, Darlene,
I bought a used one from a PC overhauler for $10. If that helps. There
are some in most larger communities where systems are rebuilt and
resold. Also you might check the local college. The electronics shops
often have some surplus gear lying around and you might be able to
scrounge one for free or maybe borrow one for a couple of days.

I'm already did this too with FC6 CD set, not yet try with F7. The
advantage did this with CD set FC6 is you didn't need to replace CD if
the installed application span across many CD, with DVD tough this is
not the case, maybe the speed is more faster because the speed read from
hard disk more faster than from DVD rom but I don't have a number ;-)
From my experience, I don't remember that the kernel did load the
firewire driver and anaconda offer the installation from that. Maybe you
just try it and report it ;-)
If that not working, I'm afraid that you must attaching the HD from
firewire manually to the computer.

Basically, I think you will find you have to LABEL your partitions,
using e2label, and then change the entries in /etc/fstab
and /etc/grub.conf to use labels, eg I have
LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults 1 1
LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
in fstab, and
and
title Fedora (2.6.22.1-33.fc7)
root (hd0,1)
