Not that I'm really into gentoo, but have you tried booting in your
VMware from a rescue CD and then create a single partition before you
install gentoo? Don't know if fdisk will just initialize a disk...
I just tried again last night using Gentoo 2004.2.
Not sure if it's because of the new version or something else but now it
works [tm].
SO.. I'm happy to an extent. (more learning though)
