config is stored...
.mc is not there anymore under /home/username ??

User dependent settings, so it must be in the home dir, but you
do not know where.
So, the "big gun" approach:
1) create a newuser
2) su -l newuser
3) delete everything in home (a few files)
4) launch mc and exit
5) have a look at what has been created in the home dir :-)
6) exit and remove the newuser

Thanks. Always forget the syntax to find and that it supports the dir attribute.
In the end, it had to do with complying with freedesktop rules, so I
guess it's a good think that long-term, all apps will start polluting
the root level of the users dir and instead put the config files one
or two files deep in a neat hierarchy.

Can't find something? Use the "locate" command to have the computer
find it for you. Even if you're not sure of the filename, try the
likely candidates, or use part of the file name. Then you can look
through the list of results.

Even the more complex

As you can see I made a lot of considerations before deciding to ask here.
You do realize that by your logic there should be no reason for anyone to try to
determine the answers themselves?
Can't wait for updatedb to run...because it may be faster to type out an email and
then sit back and wait for an answer. :-) :-)
And, if I don't know something...then I'm sure someone else in the world
wouldn't it
either...so I may as well ask it and hope that that someone else doesn't think the
way I do and will google it instead of asking again. :-) :-)

Also, I had just installed mc so I don´t think the locate database
would have picked it up yet. And if I fired updatedb it´d have taken a

Presumably it's to follow the Free Desktop standard. See for example
