My laptop is running F 31 and Xfce, fully updated. I'm trying to use
Zoom to participate in meetings of a club I belong to but am having
trouble with the microphone. If I use a headset and mic, I can usually
hear OK, but nobody can understand what I'm saying. If I use the
internal speakers and mic, the sound is sometimes OK, sometimes not.
However, I'm told that there's so much static from my mic that the host
mutes me before I can even say one, single word. Does anybody have an
idea as to how to correct this without throwing money at it? Buying a
new mic right now is out of the question, especially as I can't try it
before I buy it.

Try recording yourself to a file (e.g. use Audacity). Does it sound
clear? If not, check your mike gain isn't wound up excessively high,

If there's a fault with the connectors on the computer, that's harder
to deal with, though often it's just a grotty connection that will
clear up if you rotate the jack in the socket a little bit.
If your recordings sound clear, then you may be experiencing a
transmission issue over the internet. What people call "static" is
wrong in the first place, and misleading in that they call all sorts of
different things by the same name. If you're experiencing packet loss,
you can get crackles and pops. And some codecs are garbage (a friend's
mobile phone garbles the first syllable of almost every word he says).
I know you said you're not in a position to buy a new mic, but it might
be worth buying a $2 cheapy as an experiment. You don't have to use a
headset, you can use separate mikes and headphones.

That right there may be the problem, cranking it up too high.

I don't know about xfce, but in the Gnome sound control panel, there's
an indicator showing the microphone level. If not, then audacity works
maybe even better. It has a live indicator as well. If it's hitting
the top, then the level is too high. And you can immediate record and
playback testing.

A headset works way better. You avoid echo and feedback issues and
usually a headset microphone will have better sound than the built-in one.

This is the internal one. The headset one only worked if one jack was
plugged into the right place, the other one wasn't plugged in and the
jack connecting the headset to the Y connector wasn't plugged completely in.

This is the internal one. The headset one only worked if one jack was
plugged into the right place, the other one wasn't plugged in and the

I'm not quite clear on what that means, but it sound like hardware
problems or wrong connectors. Most newer laptops have a single
4-conductor jack like a phone which combines the headphones and
microphone. Some headsets may have the correct single jack, but most
I've seen have two separate plugs, one for the headphone and one for the
microphone. This requires a Y adapter that combines the two in the
right way to the 4 conductors. This is what I use. You mention a Y
connector, but is that a stereo splitter or the 4-conductor combiner?

This isn't a new laptop; it's at least ten years old. The cheap Walmart
headphones has a single cord that ends in a jack. That goes into a Y
connector that lets you plug into both the headphone and the mic. It's
not important, as I'm not expecting to need it in the future.

Those adaptors can be very crappy. There's also the issue of whether
they're the right one (the 4 pole TRRS jacks have two common,
incompatible, ways of wiring the mike), though adaptors that come with
a headset should have the right wiring.

Bluetooth is a mess for this. As a headphone it uses A2DP, and then
when it
switches to microphone it becomes HFP, which is usually mono.
So if you use A2DP to listen (the default), the microphone won't work.
If
you switch to HFP, the microphone will work but you'll likely get worse
audio.
You should have HFP available under the audio settings (assuming your
bluetooth chip has it in firmware)

I have a headset, not earbuds, as the buds don't fit well, especially
with my hearing aids in. And, my laptop is over a decade old, and if it
has bluetooth, I'm not aware of it, making this whole issue redundant.

tried to make a recording. I've got the internal mike set at the
default setting, and when I test it in the Settings of Zoom, it looks
like it's working, but I can't get any response from Audacity or make it
play back what I've just said. I've followed the tutorials, but
absolutely nothing! Am I supposed to save my test and then play it back?

The interface is a little confusing and the toolbars can be moved
around, so I'll assume the default layout that I have is the same as yours.
To the right of the play control buttons, there are two rows. On the
second row, there are microphone and speaker icons. To the left of the
microphone is where you can pick which input to use. Below the play
control icons is a microphone and to the right of that is a meter which
says "Click to Start Monitoring". If you click that, you should see the
level of the microphone input. If you don't see any activity try other
input options.
Once you have activity, then you can click the red record button and it
should create a new track and start showing the waveform as it's
recording. Stop when you have enough and then you can play it back.

It's set to Stereo. Changing it to Mono before starting to monitor doesn't
help.
Well, if your laptop has only a single microphone you will get only one green bar no
matter the setting.
So, if you see a fluctuating green bar can you now record/play-back?

I can't offer specific advice, but I've noted, from painful experience,
that getting all the knobs and buttons in the various sound tools set
just right so you can get input to Audacity is easier said than done.
for example, when tryhing to get Skype for linux working 2 or 3 years
(i.e., it wouldn 't recognize my USB headset) ago I spent a lot of time
finding the right settings for pavucontrol as well as the Mate sound
tool (don' t use Gnome) as well as alsamixer.
I found some articles at the audacity site that told how to configure it
for specific kinds of recording that helped me immensely.

Late reply but I believe you can set Zoom up so that you need to
press a button, such as space bar or something less popular to turn
the mic on.
Also in our club we were testing jitsi instead of Zoom and it worked
fine for us.
Joe, about the Y-adapter I do not know its history, or even the
headset for that matters, so I cannot say if the cable is split in
either of them. At home I use headphones I grab at conferences and the
internal laptop microphone; none of those headphones last for a year
before I lose one of the sides. Only a multimeter would tell for sure.
Meanwhile my crappy $10 Dell-brand headset (which I bought because of
the noise cancelling mic) with separate jacks for mic and headphones
is still chugging along (I took it to work) while flaking its faux
leather on my ears and shirt.

Old laptop could also mean corrosion and cracks on solder
bridges due to cycling and flexing.

it to either Mono or Stereo, and neither works. And yet, if I go into
the Settings in Zoom and check Audio, I can see that it's picking up
sound from my internal microphone, just fine.
I've tried following the tutorial in the Audacity Manual and gotten
nowhere. I think it's written for somebody who's familiar with
recording programs, just not this one. What it isn't written for is a
complete beginner who doesn't know all of the terminology and needs baby
steps to get started. Although I still can't get it working, your
instructions make more sense to me than the manual.

Yes. At first I couldn't bring up that list, but it eventually came up
and I set it to sysdefault, which is ALSA. I selected the same thing
for the Recording Device and set it to Stereo, as the microphone is
supposed to be an internal Stereo mic. That brought up the green bars,
and Recording actually worked. Consider this thread Solved and Closed!

It sounded just fine. However, when I hooked up to Zoom to attend my
weekly meeting, everybody complained about the static to the point that
I was forced to leave because it's impossible for me to participate. At
this point, I'm sure that it's not my equipment. It's either the Zoom
software, or the server.

I'd tend to agree. At least Skype had a test server that you could
make a fake call to, and hear a replay to know how well your end
worked. I've never used Zoom to see what it offers.
If anyone forces me to do a Zoom conference when I don't want to, I'll
make sure I have a crappy mike.

For testing, you can also try Google Meet (http://meet.google.com),
which IIRC lets you check your equipment without setting up a meeting
(you tell it to set up a meeting, then not actually follow through).

You're not trying to use the mike in two different applications at the
same time, are you? i.e. Zoom and Audacity.
You can click on the input meters and monitor an input, to see if sound
is coming through. You can record and play back something.

You could do that if you seem to get Audacity to record but not play
(e.g. play it back in something else). If Audacity is recording
something, you'll see the waveform of what it's recording in the track
displays.
You might be striking one of those situations where your hardware
reports more than one mike source and you've selected the wrong one.

My laptop is running F 31 and Xfce, fully updated. I'm trying to
use
Zoom to participate in meetings of a club I belong to but am having
trouble with the microphone. If I use a headset and mic, I can
usually hear OK, but nobody can understand what I'm saying. If I use
the internal speakers and mic, the sound is sometimes OK, sometimes
not. However, I'm told that there's so much static from my mic that
the host mutes me before I can even say one, single word. Does
anybody have an idea as to how to correct this without throwing money
at it? Buying a new mic right now is out of the question, especially
as I can't try it before I buy it.
Could You record two samples:
15 seconds of silence (setup everything and do not talk to
the microphone)
15 seconds of Your voice, just count from 1 to 10.
Save it as mp3 and post somewhere.
