Freed up space on hard disk on Dell with Windows 10
and legacy boot. Then booted from Fedora 37 usb to
install. Everything went fine with the Fedora 37 install,
but no windows option on boot menu. Most of my other
machine are Fedora only, but notebook has old Windows
7 as original OS, and it shows in boot menu but not using
UEFI boot on it.
At present, if I tried to boot legacy, it came up with not
bootable with the boot flag on UEFI partition (sda3), set
boot flag to (sda2) windows partitions, and can not boot
and use F12 to select legacy boot, and it will load
windows 10, and regular boot goes to UEFI but only has
Fedora..
Not a big deal, but not sure why the osprobe isn't
making an option for the windows 10?
Just use it for some testing of windows stuff, but it isn't
supported to windows 11, since it has an I3 with 4th gen
cpu, and looks like 11 requies an I3 with 8th gen.
Wondering if there is a fix, or if this is the only way to
get it to boot the old windows 10?

Are you saying that UEFI boots Fedora, and legacy boots Windows 10?
If yes, you probably can't boot both vai grub (I'm sure someone with
more expertise will chime in).
Just use it for some testing of windows stuff, but it isn't
supported to windows 11, since it has an I3 with 4th gen
cpu, and looks like 11 requies an I3 with 8th gen.
If your CPU supports it, why not convert Windows 10 to a VM? If not,
and you have the Fedora=UEFI/Windows=legacy config, then to get
Windows visible in GRUB you probably have to convert the Windows 10
install to UEFI.
(FWIW I converted my Windows installs to VirtualBox years ago, and
then more recently converted them to KVM. And after converting to KVM
I converted them from BIOS to UEFI.)

Well have to look into it. Was expecting the installation
of Fedora to handle the adding of Fedora to the current
boot setup. Don't recall it prompting for changing boot to
UEFI from the existing Legacy that the Windows 10 on
the Dell machine had. Bought the dell machine on ebay
for about $150 with 8G ram and 1T drive just to have a
windows machine around. Other 6 machines all Fedora.
So, don't have any windows installation media. So, at
precent the default boot on machine comes up with
Fedora, and no offer of windows in UEFI manager. Have
to use the F12 key, which then default to show the
Legacy boot from drive that brings up the Windows 10

Well have to look into it. Was expecting the installation

If the Windows install is legacy then presumably windows
was installed
on the laptop by disabling UEFI in the bios (it seems as though it was
active from what you are saying about the fedora install). What happens
if you turn UEFI off in the bios, re-initialise the fedora partition and
re-install fedora?
Have you tried running grub2-mkconfig after booting into fedora for the
first time to see if that sees the Windows partition?

Fedora will use the boot firmware that was used to boot the installation media. If you
boot it as a legacy BIOS boot, it’ll use legacy. If you use UEFI, it will use that. It
isn’t able to discern if that ntfs partition was a legacy boot OS or just a data
partition.
Perhaps there needs to be more logic about that, but at this point, legacy bios boot
support is waning and it’s probably not worth the effort.
I agree with the other post, you could boot it as a windows VM.

Fedora will use the boot firmware that was used to boot the installation

Figure when I booted with F12 the dell listed the legacy
drive, the cd, and the usb device name. It also had
Fedora listed under UEFI, so I must have selected it, so
it did the UEFI. Don't know how it would be unable to
determine disk configuration? Seems the boot flag on
partition would be a clue, and that it had to create sda3
as a fat16 partition to put the UEFI boot stuff. Then it set
boot flag to sda3, so after it installed, and rebooted, got
a message that legacy boot failed since sda3 did not
have legacy boot info. Had to elect the UEFI boot to load
the Fedora, and then change the boot flag to sda2, and
now system will default boot to Fedora with the UEFI,
but F12 and selecting Legacy will load the Window 10.
Perhaps there needs to be more logic about that, but at this point,
legacy

Probable true, but my 5 other Fedora machines all use
BIOS, some motherboards don't seem to have UEFI
option. Interestingly, the Dell does, but since its I3 is
only 4th gen and not 8th gen. It can not upgrade to
Windows 11??
Did find an interesting problem still exist between
Windows and Fedora 37 as did with earlier verions.
If boot to windows, and do a warm boot to linux, the
network card will fail to connect. Even warm rebooting
from linux results in same thing. ifconfig down and up
doesn't fix it. Seems windows does something weird to
network card that require a hard boot to clear, or a
process I was able to create for my G4L project that
resets it.
Don't recall where got info to set this to 1, but it works.

windows media, and would have to find method to get
the key code.
Do have a HP Laptop - 14-dk1074nr that had Windows
10, but it did upgrade to 11 with no problem. It has a
Ryzen 3 cpu. So, can use it. Might just move Dell to
Fedora only. It also had windows pre installed with no
media provided...

stickers I find on machine are one that says Windows 7,
and another one that says Intel i5 inside??
But when I got machine, it had Windows 10 installed,
and CPU-z and lshw-gui both show the CPU as an i3 not
an i5? Think I've used belarc advisor before and think it
actually displays the windows key. Think it is Optiplex
9020 small form..
Since the Windows 10 was installed on regular bios boot,
don't think the firmware would have any info. Just had a
small sda1partition with recovery, and sda2 was the c
drive on the 1T drive with 8G of ram. Had done a check
on upgrading cpu, but the socket and bios it reported
wouldn't support above the i3, or above the chips
generation. Recently upgraded CPU in one of my ASUS
motherboards from and AMD 2 core to AMD 8 core with
no issues. Did require a much better fan to keep temp
down. First computer was a Heathkit H-120 with 8088
and 8080 cpus. Had 768K of Ram with separate video
board with 192K of ram from video. Way back in 1983.
Old dos 1 with dual 320K floppies. So, lots of changes
over years..

Oh man, it sounds like you got hustled. It sounds like someone put a
Core-i5 sticker on that machine.
Think I've used belarc advisor before and think it
actually displays the windows key. Think it is Optiplex

Since the Windows 10 was installed on regular bios boot,
don't think the firmware would have any info.
You can view the BIOS/UEFI infor with dmidecode. I use dmidecode to
check BIOS/UEFI versions from the command line. I'm not sure if it
would be helpful in this case, though.

a cassette player for non-volatile storage and a television set as the monitor. I am
guessing it was a commodore 64.

You can view the BIOS/UEFI infor with dmidecode. I use dmidecode to
check BIOS/UEFI versions from the command line. I'm not sure if it
would be helpful in this case, though.
Dmidecode will also list the service tag ona dell machine.

Couldn't resist. My first computer (My Dad's actually) was a Commodore that used
a cassette player for non-volatile
storage and a television set as the monitor. I am guessing it was a commodore 64.

First PC was the Heathkit H-120, but first computer in
high school was a 1963 IBM 1130 with 4K of Ram (core
memory) with punch cards and teletype console. Had 5M
removable hard disk. That was in mid 70s, but only
computer in whole Guam school system.. When I got
H-120, school had moved up to a IBM System 34 with
96K or Ram, with 63.9M Hard disk, but it had 12 crt
terminals with 12" green screen. IBM 5251 and IBM
5252 terminals. Also, had 8" floppy disks...

Strange.. Looked all over the machine, and Only 2
stickers I find on machine are one that says Windows 7,
and another one that says Intel i5 inside??
I used dozens of Dell systems and every one prior to 2019 that came with
Windows had
a sticker with the license key. The latest one had a small Windows
sticker, but no
license key. Every Dell I have encountered had a sticker with the Dell
"Service Tag"
number. You should be able to get the original configuration details from
Dell using this
tag. You may also be able to get a rescue disk image that will get you
back to the factory
configuration. It is strange that you don't have the Service Tag.
But when I got machine, it had Windows 10 installed,
and CPU-z and lshw-gui both show the CPU as an i3 not
an i5? Think I've used belarc advisor before and think it
actually displays the windows key. Think it is Optiplex
9020 small form..
Since the Windows 10 was installed on regular bios boot,
don't think the firmware would have any info.

Many years ago I was given a collection of ex-office PCs that had died
in various ways from a power surge (a PSU here, a motherboard there, a
daughterboard, etc). But I was able to put together two or three from
all of the rest that worked very well for me for a long time.
Eventually they became very outdated (about 10 years out of date), and
too slow for modern use. I stripped them down for recycling. About
the only things I kept were a few cables, various RAM sticks, and all
the screws. I don't think any new PCs would use the same kind of RAM,
but they might go into a printer. A spare PSU is always useful for
testing, but a new trustworthy one is better for actually fitting into
a PC, and cheap enough. The screws were actually the most useful parts
to keep.
A friend dropped by as I was ratting them and just about had a fit over
me destroying them. But, to be honest, if you gave anybody one of
them, it would have been more of a punishment than a gift.

In high-school (graduated in 1968) I made money to support my bicycle and
electronics
habits buying scrapyard electronics from the labs in Los Alamos and selling
parts or test
equipment repaired with scavenged parts to radio stations and hams. I still
have a collection
of screws, topped up over the years with parts stripped from dead PC's. I
also still have a
couple Simpson multimeters that lack the original screws for the handles.
My mother had
a government issue stove from the 1950's with an oven door that hinged on
screws identical
to the ones used for the handles on Simpson multimeters. As you can
imagine the screws
were overkill for a multimeter handle and undersized for an oven door
hinge, so needed
replacing every few years.
Yesterday I reconfigured my home intercom system and needed a screw. Found
one in
the 1960's section of my screw collection (I think it was the last of that
size).
If you follow Munro Live Teardowns, you know that screws are eval and
should be replaced
by snap fittings or rivets. Desktop PC's used on ships at sea could be
brought down by a
screw loosened by the vibration, resulting in further vibration damage to
circuit boards or
other parts. Meanwhile, engineers are cramming more stuff into small
boxes, making it hard
to reach screw fittings with regular drivers. I recently had to buy a set
of ball-end hex keys
for cap screws located where a regular hex key can reach.

Have a Dell Studio XPS system of about that vintage that has migrated
from Windows 7 to version 10. Migrated from the original disk drive to
an SSD. No problem with accessing the windows system from Fedora 37. The
system predates the uefi bios. Have three drives with different os on
each one. The fedora os's boot from the files in /boot and /boot/loader
with the windows os as a stanza in /boot/grub2/grub.cfg from
/etc/grub.d/40_custom. Windows is still on a MBR drive while the other
two are GPT.
