Hi;
Just went through some grub problems and fixes. I got grub running but
I had to generate my own grub.conf. I ended up re-installing F8 anyways
for other reasons (faults of my own making).
But I got wondering; is there a utility that generates the grub setup
for stage2 á la anaconda in /boot/... and/or /boot/grub/grub.conf.

if you want to help 'new users', you have to sometimes hold their hand and

to understand just what is needed to set up grub. grub is a bit more trial and
error than what lilo is.
having started early with lilo, i was reluctant to leave it. to me, lilo has
one failing and that is passing (hd0,0) instead of /dev/hda1. even kde's grub
config in 'linux control center' does not know how to do this from a lilo.conf
file.
beauty of lilo is that best way to back it up is 'dd' of sector 0 to a floppy
and every thing is there.
with grub, lose sector 0 and /boot you are totally lost if you do not have
/boot/grub backed up somewhere.
having started out using al, i do believe that i will check out lilo team
and see just what and why they are bitching about not having room to build
a better lilo. other than they may be a bunch of 'c heads' and really do not
know anything about hardware and controllers.
Over two years ago I had grub problems. At that time I had to dig in
any one getting into linux will at one time or other have to drop their
'user garb' and learn some administration. or they need to know one with
a lot of patients and understanding of 'users'.

this you really did not make fully clear and i do believe is what caused
you to get replies as you did. i my self included.
to be sure of what you are wanting do have a look at 'readme' file, because
with this script and a simple sample, it may still be something that a
'newbie' can use along with a 'dd' floppy to get back in business.
if not a floppy, cd's are cheap and a 'dd' file can be renamed to a .iso
and burned.
as for a usb memory, that is just begging for disaster.
go through the same internship I had to go through two years ago.
all a part of learning how to maintain your system.

My commercial boot loader got messed up. (It doesn't matter how. I am
just trying to avoid a long unnecessary explanation). I was able to
replace that boot loader with grub by using my Fedora 8 rescue disk,
grub install and the grub shell command line. My question was not based
on being unfamiliar with working with grub.
During that process, it occurred to me that there is already a perfectly
usable bit of code in Anaconda that installs grub for dual booting with
every new install of Fedora. And, there are times when people want to
reinstall just the grub setup exactly as Anaconda would have done it
originally.
Is it not possible to make a Red Hat utility that just repeats the grub
part of the Anaconda installation process. Perhaps it could have a gui
frontend in order to make some simple adjustments, but nonetheless a
user/administrator could re-install just the grub part of their system
without having to run the entire Fedora installation.

I am thinking of asking as a Request for Enhancement that a sixth rescue
option line be added:
"Re-install Grub"
The reinstall grub option would just run Anaconda as far as grub
installation and then quit before implementing reformatting or changing
any other partition configurations. No new kernels or other programs
would be installed.
It seems quick and easy with little or no learning curve. If more
changes were wanted one of the other options could be used instead.

be creating an entry for the other other system you want to boot. There is

install / configure grub (for dual booting was the specific question)
with no previous grub.conf file and no knowledge or experience with
grub. The question was not how to re-install grub. I am also awaiting
the answer to this question because I also had this problem and had to
totally re-install Fedora just because the grub.conf file got hosed and,
as of yet, no one has answered this question.

Actually the question is "how do you install / configure grub (for dual
booting was the specific question) with or *without* previous grub.conf
file and knowledge or experience with grub". As I have pointed out, I
do have some grub experience and I did get thinks working just fine. I
was able to install grub from the grub shell and install with 'run' and
'setup' from my rescue disk, and then mount '/boot' and write a
grub.conf file with emacs.
My question was based on the steep learning curve of the first couple of
times I manually installed grub. Why isn't there a simple Red Hat or
Fedora utility that duplicates the Anaconda installer actions? It would
save on the learning curve for new users and get users back in action
faster when they run into grub problems and wipeouts. Since the basic
code already exists, it would seem a simple utility to create. I could
be used from either the 'root user' login or the rescue disk.
I ask here because I have been wrong before about how simple it actually
is to create something.

A workaround (which I almost always do) is immediately after install:
cd /boot/grub
mkdir RCS
ci -d -l -t-FromFedora -m "FromFedora" grub.conf
of course you do install the rcs package on all your systems don't you?
I mean no good admin would change their system configuration with out version
control/tracking right? :)

Another resource I found to be useful is Super Grub Disk

Recently after installing rawhide and running several maintenance
updates my system would not reboot. I seemed to have a good grub.conf
but the Master Boot Record(MBR) was hosed. I ran Super Grub Disk and was
able to boot successfully within 3 minutes.

Now that you mention it, back in the early days of Fedora Core, I successfuly
repaired a busted grub by booting to the install disk, selecting install,
telling it to use the existing Fedora partitions but not to format them, then
deselecting _all_ of the software. Later I learned about the recommended

somewhat safer.

There is a way to do it. Boot the install ( comparable disk)
into rescue
mode. Mount your partions containing / and /boot. chroot to the /
partition. then create the /boot/grub.conf file if there is not one.
Then run: grub-install /dev/sdx
x=a,b,etc.

You know, I've wondered if there is any decent editor for the GRUB.CONF
file when I was first setting up Linux.
There use to be a lot of really good LILO boot editors which worked very
well, but there doesn't seem to be really much of anything out there for
GRUB. There's nothing in the help files, the manual page for GRUB just
points to the info pages, and the info files for GRUB are very poorly
written for a user who absolutely needs to quickly customize it
immediately after installing. The utility located at System -
Administration - Bootloader either doesn't work or isn't for GRUB. Even
if it was for GRUB, it doesn't look like it really does much of anything.
An easy to use editor for the GRUB.CONF file should be part of the
standard installation on any version of Linux but either doesn't exist
or this extremely important topic seems to be all but completely skipped
in the install & configuration instructions. I have to manually "fix"
mine every time there's an update to the kernel or GRUB and I had to
play around with it for a week to get it right the first time after I
installed Linux.

Actually the question is "how do you install / configure grub (for dual
booting was the specific question) with or *without* previous grub.conf
file and knowledge or experience with grub". As I have pointed out, I
do have some grub experience and I did get thinks working just fine. I
was able to install grub from the grub shell and install with 'run' and
'setup' from my rescue disk, and then mount '/boot' and write a
grub.conf file with emacs.
My question was based on the steep learning curve of the first couple of
times I manually installed grub. Why isn't there a simple Red Hat or
Fedora utility that duplicates the Anaconda installer actions? It would
save on the learning curve for new users and get users back in action
faster when they run into grub problems and wipeouts. Since the basic
code already exists, it would seem a simple utility to create. I could
be used from either the 'root user' login or the rescue disk.
I ask here because I have been wrong before about how simple it actually
is to create something.
