I just installed Fedora 8 and disabled yum updatesd

Any help will be appreciated.
How did you make the change? Did you disable it *and* stop it?
There's two separate parts to controlling services. You can set what
will be started on certain run levels, and *separately* start and stop
services, now.
e.g. Stop yum updatesd from being started: chkconfig yum-updatesd off
(this will *not* change what the service is doing at the moment)
Stop it from running, when it already is: service yum-updatesd stop
(this will *not* change whether it is started when the computer boots)
