Thanks very much! I appear to have not got the emails before this one, so I will try and answer here. Also, in the meantime, I run tests from the BIOS but all passed (except for the battery which has now been removed). There is no DVD. It is possible that it is the fan, and that is my suspicion but I can not tell. It does happen only when there is some sort of activity in the disk. This is not the usual mild rattling sound that happens almost all the time, but screeching at times. Agreed, but the BIOS passed it FWIW. The fan also appears to blow air all right, with a lot of gusto, but that is usual. Possible, but it is not in the speakers. And sound plays fine. Please feel free to ask. Thank you again!! Hi Ranjan, SSDs do not use very much power, and therefore even the largest ones do not require fans.  I've never heard of one that does need that much cooling.  The part# that you mention is a waay-overpriced (US$360 on their website) Dell 512GB M.2 drive, that definitely has no fan. That was a memorable experience, At the depot a long line of customers were waiting to pick up packages, but the person at the front was from a local hospital and looking for a package running up against a time constraint. Modern manufacturing is very precise and reproducible, so a given model laptop will often have certain failure modes. Do you use a docking station or Type C USB dongle? "Mild rattling sound" could be a bad bearing, screeching would be a failed bearing causing contact on surfaces that should be separated. Disc drive noises should be nearly consistent, but will change as the device is being accessed. It's hard to locate some noises, so using a DIY stethoscope is often the easiest way to narrow them down. Just a single piece of flexible pipe in one ear and moving the other end around various parts of the equipment. I've fixed some very hard to trace squealing noises that way several times. Noisy cooling fans may be fixable (if you can get into the bearings), but often it's simplest and best to replace them. Though I know that's hard to do on a laptop. I've a fan somewhere which is all melted, it came from a graphics card. It eventually seized up and then overheated. Since this was a desktop PC, we simply fixed an ordinary PC fan in the case that blew all over the graphics card.
