It depends on what you mean by "free of X". If you're running a Wayland
desktop like Gnome, the only X involved is the Xwayland process that
provides an X "interpreter" for programs that don't have native Wayland
support yet. If you disabled that, then only Wayland applications would
work.

True, but most of the major ones have native Wayland support now. I
think most Gtk programs should work as long as they don't use anything
X-specific. And possibly other graphics toolkits as well.
But what would work ? Would AMD graphics work ? Would Mutter work
?
Would you be able to log into Gnome ?
These are kind of strange questions. Gnome by default uses Wayland now,
so of course you could login. And mutter is part of gnome-shell and
clearly AMD graphics are working.
Obviously Xfce and LXDE and LXQt would not work, and I guess Mate,
nor
Cinnamon, nor Budgie, would work.
For now, no. It depends on if they plan to port to Wayland or not.
