In the past, the first CD has been enough for a minimal installation. (I can't speak to recent disties because I get the DVD image.)
If you turn off the three package selection options, you only need the first two CDs.
You could also get the boot CD image, and use that to install from the Internet. However, that strikes me as slow and error prone.
You can boot from six floppies and install over a network too. And it's not too slow or error prone if the "server" is in the same room.

You say that like that's not very much. If one unselects *all* of the optional installs then it seems reasonable that a single 700MB CD should be enough.

I do like that, however.

Thius depends on how the rpms get ordered on the disc set. It should be quite possible to do. (It is a directed graph problem.) I don't know if the install is packed in directed graph dependancy order. Probably not.

Sorry, forgot the sarcasm tags. I was meaning to imply that I already knew that a the first FC5 CD is insufficient for an absolute minimum install, and that a reasonably thinking individual would expect it to be sufficient.
You are almost certainly correct that the discs are not optimally packed.
