I've just upgraded an FC1 installation to FC2,and run into a problem
getting the X server to launch.
The system had been running Gnome on an ATI Rage 128. After the upgrade, if
I try to boot into run level 5, the X server tries repeatedly and endlessly
to start, usually displaying a blank dark-blue hi-res screen with an X
cursor in the center.
I've changed inittab to boot into run level 3. From there, if I try to do
init 5, I get the same result. However, I can command startx from the
run-level 3 prompt, and the X server comes right up with my old Gnome settings.
Next, I made up a test script that runs all the start scripts in rc5.d.
When I run that, it starts up all the services associated with run level 5
-- the Samba server shows up on the network, and so forth -- and I am no
longer able to run startx. However, if I remove the xfs start script from
this script, I'm again able to bring up startx.
Next, I tried removing the xfs startup script from rc5.d and booting into
run level 5...and that put me back where I started. I still can't get the X
server up except by running startx from the text prompt.
Suggestions? Thanks...

Hi Ralph,
I upgraded my RH8.0 to FC2 a few days ago.
Immideately after upgrade completed I ran 'yum update'
to update all installed packages. The FC2 box is now
working quite nicely except with some minor problems
e.g. Gnome theme and its application disapppeared (I
just post). KDE is working properly. Please try
update all installed packages to see whether your
situation can be improved.

Just a wild guess since RHL8 did not have rhgb included. Try yum install
rhgb and see if this will pull in whatever programs were missing that
related to runlevel 5. Then you can add the redhat graphical bootloader
to your grub.conf entries also.
I boot runlevel 3 as a preference. At least this works for you.

Nope, that's not it...I tried that and got "rhgb is installed and is the
latest version." It was a lead I should have thought of, though, because a
principal difference between booting into runlevels 3 and 5 is that in
level 5 the X server has to start before the login. Thanks anyway...

New subject: Can't get DUMP to work remotely on FC1 .
I'm running FC1 2.4.22-1.2197.nptlsmp on a Dell Precision 530 with
dual P4's. The hostname of this systems is main1. This system has
a working Compaq DLT4000 which works great locally, using
dump/restore. The controller for this drive is an Initio 9200,
which is a SCSI U/W device.
The problem is that I am unsuccessful in my attempts to backup up my
file server named ns1, which is an rh9 machine. I am pretty sure
the problem lies somewhere in the pam authentication stuff, and I
have made various changes to /etc/securetty, /etc/pam.d/login, etc.,
all to no avail. The error message which results from the command,
run on ns1, "/sbin/dump -0uf main1:/dev/st0 /" occurs in the
messages file on main1, is: Aug 1 10:42:27 ns1
login(pam_unix)[30063]: auth could not identify password for
[main1].
"root", "login", "rexec", and "rlogin" are present
in /etc/securetty
on main1 (the backup machine), along with all the tty?'s.
/etc/pam.d/login contains on the backup machine contains:

auth optional pam_nologin.so
auth optional pam_securetty.so
auth optional pam_stack.so service=system-auth
account required pam_stack.so service=system-auth

Hello Ralph, I've come in a bit late on this so I don't really know what
your problem is. However, I did a RH8 to FC2 upgrade and had a not too
dissimilar problem with X. It wouldn't start at all. My problem was the
upgrade didn't create an xorg.conf file to replace the XFree86-4 config
file for X. Your starting runlevel is in the /etc/inittab file, the line
that reads: 'id:5:initdefault:'. Let's know what problem you are having
and I will see if I can help you.

the X server to start when booting into runlevel 5. Specific symptoms:
When I try to boot the system into runlevel 5 (i.e. inittab contains
id:5:initdefault), the X server goes into a repetitive cycle of starting
and failing.
When I boot into runlevel 3 (id:3:initdefault), and then try to go to
runlevel 5 (i.e. init 5), the same thing happens.
When I boot into runlevel 3 and then command startx, the X server and Gnome
come right up.
When the X server tries to start up on a reboot, it fails to create the
xorg.conf file. Just on a hunch, I tried copying the old XF86Config file
into xorg.conf, but that didn't change anything.

OK. Let's try one thing at a time. I have attached my xorg.conf file
which is a fairly basic one. Copy it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and then
modify it to suit your screen parameters, hor. sync, vert. refresh,
screen size etc. (important) and try that. It could be something in the
old XF86Config file X doesn't like. If that doesn't fix it get back to
me.

Hi Ralph, another thing to check is your /etc/X11/prefdm script. The
permissions are as follows:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1166 May 7 14:29 prefdm
This script gets run if the run level in inittab is set to 5. It then
starts up gdm, if you are running Gnome, and presents you with a
graphical login screen. My prefdm script follows:

failing with the message "Unable to load agpgart module" in the gdm log
file. In googling around, I've found several cases of the same problem with
the ATI Rage 128 card and the 2.6 kernel...could you point me to some clear
instructions on how to get this module set up? Thanks...

Hello Ralph, I have never had any experience with agpgart so I am unable
to help on this one. Perhaps someone else reading this may be able to
help you sort out what the problem is with it. Sorry. The 2.6 kernel's
support for USB is flakey at best also, still that doesn't help you, I
know. Can you use the generic frame buffer driver for your card? I used
that successfully on RH 7.1 on a SIS chip MB. Also, have you joined the
X list? There are some very helpful people there who may be able to help
you.

This almost smells like a permissions problem. A couple of things to
look for/try:
1) What does /var/log/Xorg.0.log indicate after you try to init 5?
2) Check your /etc/X11/fs/config and verify there are no bogus leftovers
from FC1.
3) At runlevel 3 and with xfs stopped, try deleting /tmp/.font-unix,
restart xfs and init 5. Also /tmp/.X11-unix and /tmp/.X0-lock if the
.font-unix does not fix it.
