I just installed fedora core 2 release and I want to change the kernel to version 2.4. How do I do that? And will that cause any problems?
I'm new to fedora but not to linux.
Thanx in advance

Just find the latest FC1 kernel and install it (rpm -ivh --oldpackage). The only thing that is at all difficult is getting the mouse to work as 2.6 tends to use /dev/input/mice which doesn't work in 2.4.

I think FC! uses /dev/mouse but I am not sure Jeem

But /dev/mouse is usually a symbolic link to whatever the real mouse device is. On FC2 machines this might be /dev/inputs/mice which doesn't get you anywhere. You have to work out what device your mouse really is, /dev/psmouse IIRC is common (standard ps/2 mouse) but it depends on your hardware.
The FC1 update kernels are available from http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/updates/1/i386/ or your favourite Fedora mirror.

I have the same problem--the mouse doesn't work under kernel 2.4. Are there any solution for that? I need 2.4 for some software to work--labview 7.0 for example.

You have the change /dev/input/mice to /dev/psaux in order for the mouse to work in the xorg.conf file.
It works for me with an upgraded FC1 to FC2 system. Also, you need to change it back when you want to switch back to a 2.6 kernel.

This depends on the sort of mouse you use. That's correct for PS/2, but IIRC, you have to specify the appropriate serial port for serial mice, and I believe /dev/input/mice worked for USB mice. (But it's been a while since I ran 2.4 on a system with a mouse...)

I have all systems w/ ps2 mice. The synaptics touchpad is recognized as a ps2 mouse also.
You are right! It is system dependent.
The best answer would probably be to compare what your settings were on a 2.4 based distribution and use the same setting for xorg.conf in the 2.6 kernel based distribution.
I guess some systems still use serial mice also. - :-)
