Dear List,
I'm trying to connect a new laptop into an otherwise entirely Fedora LAN. The new machine can see all the (shared, CUPS) printers, but won't actually print anything. 'lpr' appears to complete normally, teh job says 'completed rending' but the printer status is shown as paused. The debugging output is below. Can anyone suggest how to move forward?

I'm not knowledgeable enough to have an answer for you. But some suggestions below.

I would remove or comment these lines in the conf file. They seem completely unrelated to any other messages you are getting, but you're having problems, and here are these messages ...
The only other thing all those log messages suggested to me is that the printer is rejecting the print because it thinks it is already busy. Have you tried resetting the printer (power on and off)? Just a WAG.
What happens if you try to print a test page from the printer selection dialog? Any better messages?
Stan,
Sorry for the delay in responding - the laptop was out being used ...

That, sadly, doesn't make any difference.
The only other thing all those log messages suggested to me is that the printer is rejecting the print because it thinks it is already busy. Have you tried resetting the printer (power on and off)? Just a WAG.
I agree - the print job never seems to leave the laptop. There is nothing that I can see in the server logs that shows an access or attempt to access the printers apart from the discovery messages which all seem normal. The printer itself is fine and can be used by other workstations on the LAN without problems.

No - that looks exactly the same as any other print job.

It sounds like it is a communication problem. Is there anything different about the firewall or printer configuration compared with one of the workstations that work? How about the permissions or context of files and directories?
Can you manually reach the printer over the network? I'm not sure how to check that, but it seems pertinent.

Just a thought, but when I had a similar problem it was because there was a print job at the head of the queue that was crashing a filter and restarting the queue just repeated the problem until I got into /var/spool/lpd (I think it was) and manually removed the spool files.
Stan,

That was it - the laptop's setup and import of the network printers had chosen an invalid FQDN. As soon as I noticed and changed it, everything sprung into life.
Jonathan
If you have X and a browser handy, you can navigate to localhost:631 to view the local CUPS admin pages.
Click on "Administration" in the top menu Click "Manage Printers" under the "Printers" heading Click on the printer you wish to work with
From the dropdown labeled "Maintenance" click and see what the menu offers.
If it says "Resume Printer" click that to un-pause it. It may ask you to authenicate using an account that has printer administration permissions, like root.

Dear List,
I'm trying to connect a new laptop into an otherwise entirely Fedora LAN. The new machine can see all the (shared, CUPS) printers, but won't actually print anything. 'lpr' appears to complete normally, teh job says 'completed rending' but the printer status is shown as paused. The debugging output is below. Can anyone suggest how to move forward?

you do not mention if you have laptop dual booting or not, but all this should still apply.
first, if possible, connect laptop direct to printer, set cups up for printer, attempt to print to it.
if not, cups is not properly configured.
if does print, cups is not set up properly for network printing.
for network printing, following may help getting it correct.
=+=+=+=
read: 'man printers.conf'
then check to insure is correct;
/etc/cups/printers.conf
<Printer name>
<DefaultPrinter name>
MakeModel ??
DeviceURI ??
Accepting Yes
Shared Yes
Location ?? local or network ??
at bottom of 'man printers.conf' , note;
SEE ALSO <- read each
and the 'SEE ALSO' of each.
also check;
/etc/cups/snmp.conf
Address ??
Community ??
read: "Printer Sharing";

note, the "??" indicate settings that must be made for network printing.
