I'm running gnome on F35.
When I play a movie, I can see people talking,
but cannot hear them talking.
The sound icon on both gnome and on the
movie players (plural) indicate I have sound.
Technically I have sound.
I have the 60-cycle hum that is the reason I
rarely use this computer when I want sound.
It is also the reason that I do
not know when the problem started.
How do I figure out how to fix this?
I've had sound issues before.
It was always a mighty struggle.

Try using aplay to see if you can get anything to play. If not, I'd suspect
that you have a hardware issue.
The "silent" treatment postdates the hum issue.

If you're getting hum there is a good chance one of your connectors is
not seated properly or a cable is no good. I used to do sound. If
there is hum you solve that first. That could also explain why there is
no audio.

Movies talk to me now.
I found some mp3 files that firefox will play,
but aplay just generates noise.
From what I've read, aplay fred.mp3 should work.
I get noise.
I've tried -f MPEG , but that does not work either.
For me, this is mostly curiosity.
This is the first I've used aplay in a rather long time.

On a side note, I go back a long way, and remember when most people were
assuming that the issue had to be hardware, even when it was obvious (to
me) that it was almost certainly software. Now, hardware is so reliable
that most people never consider that it's at fault and keep trying to
find a software solution that can't exist. I'm not saying that you
should look at the hardware first, but don't ignore the possibility.

I'd always suspect the 3.5 mm connectors, they're extremely unreliable
(which isn't helped by the poor adherence to making them the correct
dimensions).
These days I like HDMI monitors with built-in speakers, less mess on
the desk that way. Of course most don't sound good, but they're okay
for listening to someone speak. If I want good music, I'll plug in
headphones or switch on ye olde stereo system.

The algorithm I always try to employ (though I often forget :-) is
"check the dumb stuff first". Don't go downloading the source to try
to find the bug till you've made sure it is plugged in for example.

Considering that it tried playing their mp3 (badly) instead of aborting
on an unknown file type. I wonder if aplay presumes raw if doesn't
find header info for the few formats that it does understand?
I just tried "aplay"-ing the output of dmesg, it looks like it does:

Note that you don't have to use a .txt extension for that file. You can
always create dmesg.mp3 and see what happens. I sense great
possibilities for 04/01/23!

I know. I started off personal computing on Amigas, where filename
suffixes weren't part of the file type determination. Other than raw
plain text, every file had identifiers in their header. But it is a
handy thing for *me* when doing a directory listing to quickly see what
something is, or to wildcard filter the listing to find something.
And I tend to use full words, like .text and .jpeg, because I was never
held captive by the stupid three letter suffix limitations of various
Mickysoft OSs.

I get some hum even when the speakers are not connected to the computer.
That is clearly not the software.
When actually playing a movie,
it's not very noticeable if there is any other sound.

I suggested using aplay because it's a very basic program and doesn't
try to do anything fancy. I figured that if it couldn't manage to
produce sound, there was a good chance that it's hardware.
