If it is what I think it is, this should do the trick.....
Create the file in the directory
~/.thunderbird/something.default/chrome/userChrome.css (something.default will be
different for every user)
with contents such as
/* Global UI font */
* { font-size: 12pt !important;
font-family: Verdana !important;
}
Change the size and font-family to suit your needs.

attached is a post by a linux user to the mozilla thunderbird list.
it is more extensive with just about all font changing one might want.
i have edited header to cut size and made it an attachment to make saving
as a file easy. also, for those who desire, remove it from email storage.
