I installed Fedora Core in a VirtualPC box on an XP-Pro with 1 gig
RAM.
It has been done because I need both Windows and Linux development
environments basically at the same time.
But to get at the sources from the Linux box I also need CVS access to
the corporate server and this can only happen if I am inside the local
LAN via a VPN tunnel. CVS is not channeled through the firewall.
The VPN tunnel is served by a Windows2000 server with RRAS and it
implements the PPTP protocol.
So my best guess is that I should install PPTP support into FC3 and
then go from there. I found this link in previous posts:

Here one of the early steps is to get a new kernel:
kernel_ppp_mppe-0.0.5-2dkms.noarch.rpm
However, in order to make FC3 run at all inside a Virtual PC box I had
to install a kernel update already. Instructions were given here:

and in step #43 one does this:
rpm -i --force kernel-2.6.9-vpc.i686.rpm
which I believe will install a new kernel (correct me if I am wrong).
What I am worried about now is if the PPTP install procedure will
invalidate the VirtualPC kernel stuff so that I won't be able to use
FC3 in VPC anymore...
And I don't like to start over like I have had to do several times
already just to get Linux going inside the VPC shell. So I am trying
to avoid a self-destruct here.
Anyone any ideas?
And please forgive if the questions sound dumb, I am not used to Linux
at all being a mainly Windows programmer...

There's a (brand new) pptp rpm in Fedora Extras.

You'll first have to enable the FE repo in your yum configuration.

I don't believe the kernel update is required anymore, actually. I remember
installing the pptp package from pptp-client.sourceforge.net a few months
ago without touching my kernel.
The FE rpm certaingly doesn't require it.

This is not getting a new kernel, it's compiling an additional kernel
module to run with your current kernel. This module is needed to provide
MPPE encryption as used by MS VPN servers.

It will, though I wonder why they specify --force (which is almost
always a bad idea).
What I am worried about now is if the PPTP install procedure will

This is unlikely. The kernel module required for MPPE adds one
additional module (ppp_mppe) and replaces the ppp_generic module. This
is done in a way that's uninstallable, so I wouldn't worry about it.

What does this mean?

I did it all from a terminal window where I had used the su command
first to switch to root.
I skipped to the pptp module in the next step and when I did the rpm
command I received a message:
warning: pptp-1.6.0.1.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID
b56a8bac
Does this mean that the installation was OK but with a warning or did
it not succeed at all???
The next step using yum does not work at all, it complains about GPG
public keays and suggests a command to install them which did not
work.

A warning is not an error. The rpm install warned you about not knowing

Well, I am not really a Linux user, just forced by circumstances to
get a Linux box operational for development and I need to get PPTP VPN
working for that.
After doing su - I was able to run modprobe and it reported success.
A warning is not an error. The rpm install warned you about not
knowing
the GPG key the RPM is signed with. Run "rpm -qi pptp" and you'll see
that the package is installed.
I hoped for the best and just continued and the packages seemed to be
installed.

I backtracked to a previous thread and found out how to import keys
and after that I could do yum update yum and now I am fine... :-)

Thanks, I can now report that I got as far as having pptpconfig
connect a tunnel. Had to go to the PPTP server and reconfigure the
policies to not allow unencrypted tunnels (was set by default on
Windows 2000 Server).
But when I tried to get the LAN-LAN stuff working the Fedora box
completely lost its Ethernet connectivity.
I could no longer ping anything on the Internet...
So now I am down to troubleshooting the tunnel. While I am writing
this on Win-XP the Fedora PC is restarting, hopefully the networking
will be back in working order now.
Should really start a new thread with this troubleshoot...
