Running FC5, kernel 2.6.18, all other things work OK. Plug iPod in as normal:
1) as soon as I mount it Amerok crashes, unmounting my other USB
drives along with it. The unmount "feature" has been reported to
Amerok - it automatically unmounts the USB drives whenever it shuts
down, either intentionally or by crashing.
2) try to use GtkPod to manage the iPod - if the ipod is mounted it
crashes - segmentation fault, if I mount the iPod with GtkPod running
it doesn't see it. I did have to change the default location in GtkPod
from /mnt/ipod to /media/disk.
The same setup worked on my previous install with 2.6.17. I handled my
iPod through Amerock, worked like a charm. I'm a newbie so most stuff
is setup as default.
Any ideas? I'm trying to free myself from my windows box completely
and until I get this fixed I'm still running it every night to update
my podcasts and tunes.

No, the kernel sees the iPod, I can mount it (using USB, not
Firewire), look into the file system, unmount it. I am even able to
administer it with iTunes from an XP guest session running in VMWare
server, that's how desperate I was today to get some new music on
it<G>. This is a clean install of 2.6.18, I previously had 2.6.17
running and it worked flawlessly - I had issues with Amerok but not

Does this file (on the iPod) have anything in it?

Apparently on newer iPods this file is zero-length which causes
problems for the Linux tools. (I just ran into this when I got a Nano
to replace my Mini which works fine.)

you do this with an iPod? I do this with my iRiver all the time. Just

that are on it, so you have to update that when you add tracks. There

I have a 1GB and I think it is great. I would buy another if I could
find one in the local stores. The only problem is the arm band won't
fit around my arm. :( or it could be :) as it means I have more muscle
than the iRiver arm band is designed for.
Display Lyrics? Why would I want that? No just kidding. It doesn't
but I don't really care about that. Anytime I use the iRiver, I don't
have the ability to watch the display anyways. If I want to see lyrics,
I will be at the computer. I do like the fact it will run ogg-vorbis
files but I wish it would play flac's.
I do like the idea of just plugging in the USB cable and finding that it
mounts like a HD. This was after a firmware update from the iRiver site.

More details. You say a previous install, so more has changed than
just the kernel then, correct? If so, what was your previous install
and what is your current install (versions of Fedora)? What versions
of amarok, gtkpod, and libgpod do you have? Did you get them from
Fedora (and Livna for gtkpod) or from another repository?
(The version of libgpod included in Fedora is pretty ancient and many
many bugs have been fixed in more recent versions. That would be my
first suspect. I've been using libgpod and gtkpod from CVS forever
now and it works splendidly. The latest releases of gtkpod and libgpod
are pretty recent, so they might be worth checking out.)
Also, what model of ipod do you have?

It's an iPod Nano that worked fine with the previous kernel and app's.
I'm a newbie and so can't tell you exactly what I had before (it
worked, why would I record it<G>) - all I know was that it was running
2.6.17 and all upgrades were in place. When 2.6.18 came out I decided
to redo my partitions (bad initial planning) so saved /home to an
external drive, blew everything away and installed again, upgrading
straight to 2.6.18 from 2.6.15, installed Amerok and gtkpod etc, at
present the yum gui tells me I have no updates available.
If I run gtkpod, mount the iPod, and try to sync it I get the
following error message from gtkpod:
'/media/disk/iPod_Control/iTunes/iTunesDB' does not exist. Import aborted
It does exist...
If I run gtkpod with the iPod already mounted it fails immediately,
the only error is "segmentation fault"
as to which versions I have at present:

Where I got them - standard repositories I assume, I don't know enough

I got the same result. My mini worked fine, but the nano did not
(gtkpod simply seg faulted).
Is it possible that you upgraded your nano with iTunes somewhere in
there? While I was researching my nano troubles, I found references
that it's not the newer iPods as much as the newer firmware on them.

kernel package and try gtkpod then.
I think Jamie was onto something when he asked if iTunes has updated
your ipod firmware recently. Older versions of libgpod had problems
with a zero length sysinfo file on the ipod. The latest version
handles is AFAIK.

I don't think so, the folks at Livna do a good job at packaging
things. But the versions are badly outdated. libgpod is in core,
amarok is in extras, and gtkpod is from livna. I don't know what it
would take to get libgpod updated in core. It appears that the same
ancient version is included in FC6 as well. :(

I haven't topuched the nano's firmware in a long time, so that
probably isn't the problem. I unistalled gtkpod and libgpod, which
alos uninstalled amerok, and downloaded the latest tar.gz for both
from CVS.
Started with libgpod, ran ./configure, errored out with:

To save you much time, you can use yum-builddep to get most of the
build dependencies in place, e.g. yum-builddep libgpod should install
the required devel files. There are some new ones that aren't
included in the current libgpod spec file, so those need to be pulled
in manually. I've just started working on an updated spec file for
libgpod that I plan to submit to bugzilla as an enhancement request...
Anyway, here are the build requirements that I have:
BuildRequires: glib2-devel
BuildRequires: gettext
BuildRequires: gtk2-devel
BuildRequires: gtk-doc
BuildRequires: pkgconfig
BuildRequires: python-devel
BuildRequires: swig
If you don't have any need to build the python bindings, you can
eliminate python-devel and swig from that list. If you don't need or
want the developer API docs, you can lose gtk-doc as well. So just
yum install glib2-devel gettext gtk2-devel pkgconfig
Ought to get you the stuff you need. Post back if configure still
fails then. If you're using ./configure; make; sudo make install,
your stuff will end up in /usr/local so you'll need to add that to
/etc/ld.so.conf (or to a file in /etc/ld.so.conf.d) before you build
other software that needs libgpod. Something like this ought to do:
echo /usr/local/lib> /etc/ld.so.conf.d/local.conf
/sbin/ldconfig
When you get to gtkpod, you can probably use yum-builddep gtkpod to
get the dependencies for that. I don't think they've changed much
from what the livna build has.
I'll post the BZ# of the RFE for a newer libgpod when I get it done,
that will have a specfile patch that should build on FC5 easily if you
want to create a nice rpm. Doing that will let your system know that
libgpod is available and you could just rebuild amarok by downloading
the source rpm, grab the build deps using yum-builddep, and run
rpmbuild --rebuild /path/to/amarok*.src.rpm.

the CVS tree, finally was able to configure, make and install it with
your help, no errors, thought I was on the home stretch... I had also
downloaded the latest gtkpod from CVS, gtkpod-0.99.8, started to
configure it, errors out with
No Match for argument: libgpod-1.0
Google that , 300 hits, most pointing to Mandriva, search for
"libgpod-1.0" + FC5, 5 hits, none that look any good to me....

Using yum-builddep should get all of the things gtkpod's
configure
will need.
Oh, it will also pull in libgpod and libgpod-devel, since the package
management system doesn't know you have libgpod install in /usr/local.
Just uninstall those two packages before building gtkpod so you can be
sure that gtkpod picks up the right libgpod version.

Sometimes the simple solutions are best. Way back at the start of this
thread we determined that my nano's SysInfo was empty, a "feature" of
the newer iPods, and Jamie Wellnitz said that he had similar problems
until he copied an older SysInfo file from a working iPod onto his new
Nano, changing the S# to match his nano. I didn't have a chance to do
any work on the laptop this weekend, my wife threatened to leave me if
I so much as touched it, came in this morning, tried Jamie's
suggestion for want of something else to do while catching up on my
email, started Amerok, and was finally able to manage my iPod. I
haven't had a chance yet to see if gtkpod works as well, but so long
as I can use Amerok together with my iPod I'm a happy camper.
Thanks to Jamie, Todd, Chris et al for all their suggestions and help.
I learned a few new tricks along the way.

Right, there are libglade and libglade2 packages (and each have
corresponding -devel packages. Using yum-builddep gtkpod should have
pulled the correct stuff in for you. Did it not do that?
